The UNAIDS/WHO Working Group on GlobalHIV/AIDS and STI Surveillance, initiated in November 1996, is the main coordinationand implementation mechanism through which UNAIDS and WHO compile the bestinformation available and help improve the quality of data needed for informeddecision-making and planning at national, regional and global levels. This work isdone in close collaboration with national AIDS programmes worldwide and withother national and international experts and institutions.123
