The UN<strong>AIDS</strong>/WHO Working Group on Global<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> <strong>and</strong> STI Surveillance, initiated in November 1996, is the main coordination<strong>and</strong> implementation mechanism through which UN<strong>AIDS</strong> <strong>and</strong> WHO compile the bestin<strong>for</strong>mation available <strong>and</strong> help improve the quality of data needed <strong>for</strong> in<strong>for</strong>meddecision-making <strong>and</strong> planning at national, regional <strong>and</strong> global levels. This work isdone in close collaboration <strong>with</strong> national <strong>AIDS</strong> programmes worldwide <strong>and</strong> <strong>with</strong>other national <strong>and</strong> international experts <strong>and</strong> institutions.123
