w w w . u r b a n r a cr. c o . z aFROM THE DRIVER S SEAT’With Zaahir ParkerWelcome to the nextepisode in the Urban RacRseries of online magazines. We've received numerousemails from our readers outthere and we encourage youall to let us know youropinions, stories andcriticisms, so that we canimprove the magazine evenfurther for your readingpleasure.Street 2 Strip seems to be awelcome success for theKillarney faithful as well asthe management team atKillarney. I've personallynoticed a decline in theamount of people frequentingthe streetracing hotspots. Thisis something, which cancertainly work and is alreadyproving to work well. To theKillarney management team Iwould like to say: WELLDONE and the best ofeverything for the future.I've had the misfortunerecently of having had bothmy vehicles damaged. Mycar had its rear screensmashed in by brick-throwingmother fuggen cowards, andmy missus's car wasdamaged in a parkingincident. Worst of all is thatboth vehicles were damagedsimultaneously and we weresubjected to using … rentalcars. I now fully understandthe term “drive it like arental” and subsequentlyended up driving a ToyotaCorolla (2*), a Ford Focus(3*) and a VW Polo Classic(3.5*). The Corolla had anelectronic fault after twodays, the Focus had the besthandbrake (*insert naughtysmiley here*) and the Polowas just so much punchierthan the other two. I amseriously considering startinga new column involving justrental cars. LOL!In this issue of the magazinewe are very proud to featureone of Cape Town's favouriteson's… Anwar Levy. Anwarhas been doing very wellrecently with his Nascar atlocal and national events.Even that Veedub-lovingWaanie drools over this car'spower and times. We alsofollow up in this issue withanother air-cooled machinein the form of a stunningKarmann Ghia. Our biker ofthe month is a close friend ofour last issue's biker and his600cc Suzuki is one of thesexiest around. This Gixxer isa perfect example of how lessis more and how smallchanges can show bigdifferences. Our road test is abit different this time aroundas we cruise around CapeTown on a Harley no less.We are all looking forward tothe upcoming Lord of theBlings event which is to beheld at the Good HopeCentre on Sunday 30November 2008 as well asKing of the Mountain on thesame weekend. We are fast approaching theend of the year and I wouldlike to take this opportunityto wish all matriculants andstudents, wherever you maybe studying, the best ofeverything for the exams. And as we all approach theholiday season I wisheverybody a safe festiveseason and safe driving.Be sure to keep those lettersand emails coming so that wecan give you, our readers,EXACTLY what you want.CooliosRTEmail:info@urbanracr.co.zaPostal:PO Box 62, Athlone, 7760,Cape Town, South AfricaMobile:+27 (0)82 890 7802Fax:+27 (0)86 544 0803P A G E 0 4 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 4

Inthe World" breaking into the 140DBmark on the IASCA world's meter, stilloff a single ten inch sub-woofer. Thiscomes just two weeks after breaking anew personal record hitting 138.8DBsat the GTA-Mods Powerplay dyno daywhere the Gauteng Nitrocrew teamhosted a sound-off. If you haven'talready heard, Killarney is the place tobe at every fortnight Friday with Street2 Strip drags where no racing license isrequired to test your daily ride downthe drag-strip.With our matric and varsity readerswriting exams currently, we here atUrban RacR wish them well and hopeto see them at the upcoming events, namely KOTM in Ceres, ticketsavailable at Shoprite and Checkersstalls as well as via Computicket. ’obliterating mostof its challenger s’w w w . u r b a n r a cr. c o . z aThe unassuming Anwar Levy aka Jakes is theowner of one of the fastest Opels in CapeTown. The Opel itself has a bit of historyattached to it and is known by the KillarneyRaceway regulars as Nascar.* sitting pretty on STR rimsOne of the main reasons why he purchasedthe car two years ago was because of itsheritage. The car was originally built byNasen Padayachee of Nascar who is currentlythe titleholder for fastest front wheel drive caron the quarter mile throughout South Africa.Rumour has it that at one stage of its life thisOpel was put through its paces on the roadsin and around Cape Town, obliterating mostof its challengers, before becoming“superboss” of the track. But that was thenand this now, and Anwar is staking his claimat Killarney and around the country.Anwar is no stranger to motor racing and hasalways been involved in one way orP A G E 1 6 | U R B A N R A C R |O N L I N E I S S U E 4

Both of them doextremely well in their races and areEXTREMELY competitive. To be competitive your machine has to beup to the task as well, and Anwar's 1992model Opel Superboss fits the bill in thisregard. It has been a labour of love gettingthe car to where it is now, but the C20XEmotor has already shown in its worth theworld over. In standard form this littleengine pushed out a respectable 110kw inthe early 1990's. Upon acquiring Nascarfrom the previous owners, Anwarreplaced the engine and had it rebuilt tosimilar specifications as to when Nasenand his crew originally built the car. Thisengine now produces 360kw with 611nmof torque. So this engine is producingthree times the amount of power as itoriginally made. Armien Levy and the restof the team at Armien Levy Motorsportcompleted most of the work done in thiscar, with Jaleel at Infinity Motorsporttuning the Nascar to perfection (Jaleel wasalso largely responsible for the Scoobywagon we featured in print issue 03).The head has been gasflowed and portedand a set of custom cams has been fitted.Anwar made sure that he wouldn't give ustoo much details regarding his cams, claiming “trade secrets” – LOL! pistons and custom cams, thereby enablingthem to drop the compression to a veryuseable 8.5:1. This is obviously perfect for thefitment of the T3/T4 Turbonetics turbo, whichreceives its fuel management from theDicktator 60-2. The Dicktator system has seenan increase in the shopping list stakes withmany track car owners and street “racers”opting for it as the management system ofchoice. The 1000cc injectors ensure that thereis enough fuel for the motor to run at 2barboost without running lean. A Quaife diff hasbeen fitted to the six speed Getrag gearbox toget maximum traction to the full slicks whenhe is racing at the track. For everyday use, theNascar sits pretty on a set of STR rims coveredin Nankang rubber. There are numerouscustom bits and pieces that have also beenadded into this 11-second recipe. This includesthe manifold, plenum intake and modifiedengine mounts, which were all custom madeby the gurus at Nascar themselves. One canalso be excused for mistaking the MSDdistributor and coil packs for amplifiers andcapacitors (Ed - Shame, I heard about that kid). The guys at Noise Boys out in VoortrekkerRoad custom made the rollcage… a verynecessary feature for the safety of the driver.Obviously you need to upgrade your brakesfor safety reasons as well, so Anwar opted togo for a very efficient Praggia setup.Anwar is thankful to many people for what hehas achieved and asked that we mention themin this article. Who are we to deny him? Wehave already mentioned his dad, Armien Levy,as well as Jaleel of Infinity Motorsport, but wealso need to add his mechanics, Saan andShahied; Zaki (Mr WheelWorx) Hendricks;Faizel of Mag Addiction; the guys at Fasiegh'sElectrical; Nasin Kagee of Kagee'sPanelbeaters; Satish and Luke aka Pantera forthe oodles of advice; as well as Nazeem Smithaka Papa and Liyaket. You know who you areand what you did. And this is Anwar Levysaying very clearly: THANK YOU!It is obvious that Anwar Levy has become arole model to many youngsters (even adults)and it is the support of his sponsors, fans andfriends that can only encourage him further. How much further you may ask? w w w . u r b a n r a cr. c o . z a’lots of powerand agility’More and more people arelooking at purchasingmotorcycles as a mode oftransportation in an attemptto save the huge amount ofmoney that they spend onfuel. Bikes are lighter on fuel, yes, and they are just as fastas and in most cases fasterthan, motorcars. The GSXR600 is one of themore comfortable motorcyclesavailable to the new buyer. Itseems that the 600cc's are thenew 400's when it comes topurchasing a small bike. Newbuyers beware. In thisparticular bike the powerdelivery certainly is not small.Suzuki engineers were giventhe task of developing a newmachine that would be able tobeat off any other 600cccontenders. Their task was tobuild a middleweight sportbikewith improved overallhandling which would giveriders more confidence to ownthe racetrack… again. Theywent about this task byspeaking to racers andmechanics from all over theworld, and combining whatSuzuki had learned fromracing and building the worlddominatingGSXR 1000. Theresult was a bike that is lightand nimble with lots of powerand agility, being reallydominant low down in therevs.I met an old school friend atLord of the Blings 2007 andwas pleasantly surprised tolearn that he owned one ofP A G E 2 4 | U R B A N R A C R |O N L I N EI S S U E4

w w w . u r b a n r a cr. c o . z a* impressed with the attention to detailthese Suzukis. I rememberAshley Snyder from way backwhen as a student he rodebigger bikes than some of theeducators at Livingstone HighSchool. The 750cc he rodethen was a far cry from the50cc bike that his mom hadbought him as a youth. Heused to get a huge kick out ofleaving those teachers in thedust when he left school. Andlet's not forget the burnouts atthe back of the school. HAHA!Those were the good old days.Let's get back to the storythough. This GSXR600 shares its goodlooks and much of itstechnology with its biggersiblings in the Suzuki line-up.Its fuel tank is shorter whichputs the bars within easy reachand the seat is extremelycomfortable. I'm quite a shortguy and this “bigger” bike feltmore comfortable than my400cc. Ride comfort comescourtesy of a lower center ofgravity and adjustablesuspension that can betweaked to your ownspecifications. Some trickitems are standard on the bikesuch as the super light trispokewheels, which Ashley hadcustom-coloured to gold. And Ipersonally like that shortstubby trapezoid shapedexhaust sitting just behind theheel of your foot. What asound! It's always difficult todescribe sound, but I think twowords sum it up nicely - primalscream. You cannot help butturn to look when Ashleytwists the throttle.Ashley got a bit of a wakeupcall when he realized howpopular these machines hadbecome. Imagine pulling up ata traffic light and seeing a fewmore bikes, which lookEXACTLY like yours. Hewasted no time in making hisbike stand out from the restand promptly got hold of LTCustoms in Grassy Park to givehis bike an identity of it's own.Ashley had been a fan of thelate Barry Sheene since he wasa kid, thanks mainly to hissister whose walls wereadorned with posters of theever-popular Sheene whospent fourteen years of his liferacing motorcycles. Whatbetter way to pay tribute to thisGrand Prix legend than tobuild a replica. So, the originalblack and grey was replacedwith the red, white and goldTexaco Heron colours of oneof Sheene's machines. LTCustoms have done anamazing job and I am trulyimpressed with theworkmanship and attention todetail - I will let the picturestell the story. They evenincluded Sheene's luckynumber seven in the livery. The bike's mechanicals are stillstandard and Ashley does notsee the need to alter what hefinds to be an ideal motorcycleoffering a very comfortableride, although he is stillconsidering whether or not toinstall a full micron pipe andair filter. It's a bit of a toss-upreally. Why fix something thatisn't broken? Then again, could it be a change to make iteven better? Choices, choices! Here's a little bit of trivia Ifound in my research. w w w . u r b a n r a cr. c o . z a*race inspired design is evident from every angleGhia was modified for Volkswagenusing a 300mm wider Beetlefloorplan. The general public fellinstantly in love with the KarmannGhia. Being handcrafted, it wassubstantially more expensive than theBeetle which shared the same flatfour boxer air-cooled engine. Thiswas certainly a sheep in wolf'sclothing. The Karmann Ghia had thelook and feel of an out and out sportscar with the reliability and easymaintenance costs of the Beetle. Thecar was never produced in massproduction quantities and thereforeremains quite rare with just over360,000 of these cars having beenbuilt. Needless to say it is also rare tofind one in as good a condition asFaheem's 1965 model. An example of this is the VolkswagenKarmann Ghia. Volkswagen needed tobolster their image in the 1950's, and what’better way to do this than to build a flagshipmodel to show the world that they can domore than just build “ugly” cars.thi s car oozescharisma’German coachbuilder Karmann teamed upwith the Turin design firm headed by Ghia tobuild such a car. An old Chrysler design byFinished in a cherry red body colourwith a deliciously coloured ivoryroof, this car just oozes charisma. This is pretty obvious when you seethe car cruising around Cape Town. He's had the car for about four yearsand still finds it uniquely sexy. However, no matterwhat lays beneath the bonnet orbehind the wheels, this will alwaysbe a graceful timeless design, whichcan be likened to a PorscheSpeedster.*this will always be a graceful, timeless designI just need to end a bit off-topic byreminding Faheem that I'm stillwaiting on an answer from himregarding the functionality of the redfur covered handcuffs hanging fromthe mirror. You gotta havesome tunes when you cruising isn't it?What this car lacks in performance, itmore than makes up for in the looksdepartment. Seeing as Faheem wasentering more and more car shows andcompetitions, he decided to dress up theengine bay somewhat to gain those extrapoints. The engine dress up kit consistingof some braided hosing and colourcoding does the trick perfectly. It's the best thing since the string of a G-string. The Street Bob Harley Davidson is part ofthe Harley family called Dynas. That's theirsportier, more naked bikes with a higher powerto mass ratio. Yes, it's a 1600cc (1584cc to beexact) and pushes out a healthy 145nm. Harleydoesn't even quote the kW reading, justmentioning, “it's enough”. It's got a 6-speedtransmission (no “Baker” or Screaming Eagle”here) with the most perfect ratios for an awesomeride. This little baby has enough torque to tow anUno and handles better than a locomotive on thetracks. It is so moerse lekker to ride it's not evenfunny. The feeling you have just pottering aroundon it on a coastal road or through a deserteddorpie muuuuch further from home than youplanned… that's what it's all about. Here the joyis the ride, not only the destination. Did youknow how beautiful Franschoek is? I know thisbecause I wasn't smearing it through there, hanging off the seat with the krane (taps) wideopen, singing along to the tune of a Yoshi/Akroor whatever's your favourite band. This biketurns over that odometer effortlessly. Just straddleher and take on the open road. There are things you will notice on a cruiser thatyou would never on a superbike. It seems thatyou are more approachable to people andabsolute strangers come up to you to talk to you.You also sit much more comfortable, especially ifP A G E 4 6| U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 4

you are growing your stomach muscles (LOL!).You can ride all day and not feel like you evenrode at all. That's cruiser in general.R e p a i r sC u s t o m i s i n gOpen 7Days/Week& PublicHolidaysA c c e s s o r i e sWhen I had a '08 Busa I thought that if it had ashaft that could handle the power instead of thechain, that would be cool because shafts don'tstretch, shafts don't break and possibly shafts lastlonger than 3000 kms. So the guys at HarleyDavidson explain to me that their Carbon-Kevlarbelt is meant to last 70 000km!!! That is soinsane. Harley Davidson have been buildingbikes for over 100 years. This means that surelythey have to be good at it by now. I don't work atHarley Davidson - these are things I discoveredmyself. It's exceptionally well made and looksand feels like it will last for at least 50 years. They have more than one dealership. Thedealerships are not full of SHIT. There are morethan three accessories from the factory for yourbike - an encyclopaedia size catalogue worth tobe exact. The HOG (Harley Owners Group) isthe largest bike club in the world with more than1.2 million members. That is certainly more thanthose brahs you see on a Sunday morning, ne?How this helps is that if you ride from here toRussia or further and get stuck anywhere alongthe way, you can phone HogAssist, and they willsort you out.So here we have a good product with excellentbackup and support internationally; that's reallycool to ride; and it retains its value reasonablywell. You need only ever own just one modeleven till you are a dirty old man (lol) and mostpeople won't be able to tell the difference aboutthe bike and you still ask why?The Harley lifestyle is certainly different from theSuperbike lifestyle. There is no need to see howfast you can get to Mountain Mill and back. There is no need to see how low you can leanyour bike on Sir Lowry's Pass. The Harley vibe ismore relaxed, and dare I say it, more enjoyable. You just want to ride. Give it a chance, it will bethe best you ever do.OUR SERVICES INCLUDE:* Colour-coding of rims* Widening of rims - alloy and steel* Repairing of buckled, scratched, chipped and broken rims* High polishing of rims, lips and engine parts* Changing the PCD of rims* Drilling of hubs and brake disks* Making of spacers, centrecaps, domes and adaptors* Buying and selling of new and used rims and tyres* Trade-ins gladly acceptedCnr 5th Avenue & Strandfontein Road, Grassy ParkTel: 021 704 4055 Cell: 082 471 3544/083 586 6522Constantiaberg Biketique was established in July 2008, as an extension toConstantiaberg Autos to meet the growing demands for cheaper transport. Dirty LittleSecretWHEN AMIEN TOLD ME HE HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL TOSHOW ME I FELT MYSELF DEALING WITH SOME SEVERELYMIXED REACTIONS. I KNEW IT WAS A CAR, AND ISUSPECTED IT WOULD BE PRETTY FAST. BUT AS IS THECASE WITH MOST MODIFIED RIDES, ALONG WITH THEADDED PERFORMANCE USUALLY COMES A HEAVILYCOMPROMISED RIDE QUALITY. AND THAT MEANT I WASABOUT TO BREAK MY BACK OVER A SPEED BUMP.EXCELLENT.I'm pleasantly surprised as I roundthe bend leading to the EvolutionPerformance Centre. Instead ofcrudely bolted roll cages, NOSbottles and a gaudy set of alloysI'm greeted with the pristineexterior of Volkswagen's finesthatch back covered in its originalfactory issue red paint. In factTested: STO Tuned Golf 5 GTIeverything about it lookscompletely standard. Not so muchas an after market exhaust hasbeen added to the mix. So why thehell am I about to test it?Despite its tame looks, this Golfhas a dirty little secret. Evolutionhas just recently started installingand testing STO imported ECUsoftware upgrades for a host oflocal machinery. It's also the onlymodification that's been carriedout by Amien. The factory carmakes 147kw and 280nm, andthat means it's an above averageperformance hatch. But with theslew of hatches that's recentlycome out of the woodworkincluding the Focus STs, AstraOPCs and Renault R26s thathave all taken to the streets totake up the challenge of king ofthe road, the Golf's performancefigures have started looking iffy. With an undetectable upgradeboosting the numbers up to175kW and 380Nm for under justR4500, it's just the trick forlevelling the playing fields. Andthat's where I come in. Amiengives me the keys and throws mea look that says it all: "Go wild!”I drop my butt into the driver’sleathery seat and proceed to strapmyself into its posh cocoon. Theinterior is luxurious. Junking anyof this high end kit just to liberatesome more performance would bea sin. Still, it's the very pursuit ofpower that has me in thispredicament. It was time to put thepedal to the floor, but hard!My left palm falls neatly atop theGTI's shiny gear lever. With anotchy shift into first, both feetbalancing the clutch andaccelerator, I was ready for myfirst full bore launch. As the revsclimb and settle at 4500rpms, Idrop the clutch. The Golf's maturedemeanour is chucked out thewindow as the full might of theturbo-charged 2 litre lump shredsthe front rubber amidst a cloud ofacrid tyre smoke. Instantly we'recatapulted forward. I'm on the redline far quicker than anticipated. This thing was wild and would bebetter appreciated on my informaltest track not too far away. A localabandoned industrial area with anetwork of chicanes, straights and90 degree bends was just 5minutes away and would beperfect venue. I go there. Quickly. With an open road ahead of meI'm finally able to open up thetaps. A few more launchesconvince me of what I've alreadysuspected. The STO upgradeworks, and works well. There's noaggressive kick in the powergraph. Instead you're spoilt with anever ending rush of power firingthe tacho's needle into the red linequicker than you can snatch at thegear lever. Acceleration to 100kphdrops by 0.5 of a second to 6.7and goes on to a top speed of235kph proven with our trustyGPS. Fuel consumption is likely toimprove as well, if drivenconservatively but there'll be noneof that today. Not only do thefigures look good but the everydaydriveability improves exponentiallyas well. Just about 20 of theseconversions have been done in 1month with no hiccups. Allsoftware is untraceable to dealerdiagnostics and could be put backto original at anytime. It's an edgemuch needed by the Golfenthusiast if he intends keepingup with the Astra OPCs, FocusSTs and Renault R26s.STO is a German basedleading internationalchip-tuner visit theirOh did I mention that these carstoo can benefit from an STOupgrade?
