More showsynchronisationrequestedOne thing that often amazes me is the lack of synchronisation between internationalexhibitions and conventions in this business. Very often large international andnational shows are organised to coincide on similar dates. I understand that with theenormous amount of exhibitions, conventions and seminars it is almost impossibleto find a time that does not conflict. But very often it seems that those who make theplanning decisions do not look at the calendar of shows and exhibitions and compareit with, for instance, this magazine’s Events Calendar.About 5 years ago the world was different, each market was more isolated buttoday everything is global in combination with a much higher speed of producingnew products. People and products travel a lot more today and communication hasconsiderably improved but that doesn’t always solve the problem. I can give you anexample from our business. Between 5 and 9 March the Italian show Samoter 2008will be held in Verona., On the 11 March, two days after Samoter finishes Conexpo-Con/Agg 2008 starts in Las Vegas and continues to the 15 March. At the end ofFebruary until the beginning of March the German Demolition Association AscoAbbruch holds its annual convention in Germany and between 4-8 March CSDAis holding its annual convention. Just a month ago World of Concrete in Las Vegasended. There is so much action in just a couple of months, leaving very little forthe rest of the year.I do not have a solution to how the planning of these shows could be betterorganised. But surprisingly many in this business are involved and visit a lot ofshows year in and year out. I consider the events mentioned to be very important tovisit, but there is just not enough time and it is also expensive. As PDi has a groupof editors we try to divide the different events between us, but it is still impossibleto cover all the exhibitions and shows. Manufacturers are up against this problemeven more as they also want to introduce their new products at as many shows aspossible in a year.Looking at the first two months of 2008 as an example, many manufacturersprepared for World of Concrete in Las Vegas in January. New products were shippedoverseas. Not many manufacturers have the capacity to keep a stock of new products. And if a manufacturer is planning to attend Samoter the machinery needs to be sentto Italy. To get all products back to Las Vegas and Conexpo-Con/Agg two days afterSamoter is impossible. The only option is to store products in the US. This is a biglogistical problem, not only for machines but also for people. As I said I do not have any solutions for organisers to improve the timing betweenevents but I can make one recommendation.Read PDi regularly. In PDiwe provide a short summary of most ofthe events planned within the demolition, recycling and concrete sawing and drillingindustries and this particular issue is anexample of that policy.Jan HermanssonEditor-in-Chiefjan.hermansson@pdworld.comWords from O’BrienShows,ConventionsandMeetingsGaloreThe first part of the year is always busy withmany trade shows, conventions and meetings. This year is no exception. In fact, 2008is filled with more events than usual. The World of Concrete was held inJanuary in Las Vegas with 84,789 attendees, the second largest show ever. Las Vegaswill also host ConExpo-CON/AGG in March,a show that is held every three years, with attendanceof well over 100,000 expected. Inbetween these two events, Concrete Sawingand Drilling Association will meet for its 36thAnnual Convention in Las Vegas also. Not to be forgotten is the 2008 AnnualConference of the International Associationof Concrete Drillers and Sawers which will beheld from May 1-5, 2008 in Valencia, Spainin conjunction with the Spanish association’sfirst annual meeting. This gathering of concretecutting professionals from around theglobe is being hosted by the newly formedSpanish Association of Technical DemolitionDrilling and Sawing, known as AEDT. AEDT isthe newest country-wide sawing and drillingassociation that was formed last year withassistance from IACDS and its members. The beautiful city of Valencia on theMediterranean is known for science, technology, finance and leisure and is an importantlocation for international business and tradefairs. AEDT has put together a programmeto complement the IACDS annual conferencewith opportunities to experience theculture, ambiance and gastronomy of thisbeautiful city. The IACDS business meeting this yearhas been scheduled over two days, onMay 2-3, so that attendees will have plentyof time for discussion and planning theprogrammes and activities for IACDS. Theprogram will include presentations on newand emerging markets such as concretesurface preparation and polishing as a newbusiness service for contractors. The membersfrom Russia and Sweden will presenta proposal to initiate a training programmeat the university level to educate architectsand engineers about the advantages offeredby sawing and drilling contractors and theirmethods. In addition, IACDS members willdiscuss the CSDA Insurance Programme.Five years ago the US association formedits own insurance programme that providesa broad range of coverage’s including commercialgeneral liability, automobile, workerscompensation, property/casualty, pollutionliability, professional errors and omissions. This program has become extremely successfulso IACDS will examine it to see ifcoverage could be extended to the nationalassociation members. While these are only a few of the eventsto be considered for 2008, the IACDSAnnual Conference is one to include inyour travel plans for 2008. I hope thatyou will make the decision to join us inValencia for the 14th annual meeting andtake advantage of this opportunity to meetwith sawing and drilling professionals fromaround the world.Best regardsPatrick O’BrienPresident IACDS6 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

“We create monsters!”“But useful ones for truly heavy demolition and recycling purposes”. Trevi Benne is a devotedand specialiced manufacturer of demolition and recycling equipment for excavatorsfrom 50 to 150 t. The international demolition and recycling industries has during the lastyears seen a clear change towards bigger and heavier attachments for more powerful andeffcient handling. Trevi Benne has during the last five years developed a strong productionmethod to meet these needs delivering crushers, pulverisers and scrap shear from 5 to12 tons to user all over the world.HC 100: 11.000 kgprimary demolitionwith 2,000 mm jawopening.Hydraulic Jaws HC SeriesThe HC primary hydraulic jaws was created for the most delicateand precise demolitions, permits the operator to move with agility inthe destruction of reinforced cement structures and in the removal ofmaterials even of a considerable height; at the same time, the profileof the claws, piloted by a double cylinder and equipped with shearsfor cutting iron and a reinforced concrete rod inside the framework, allows for operating without any problems, even when the structuresin are strongly hard. Just three key words to define the major strongpoints of the HC Series: powerful, because it is equipped with cylindersthat guarantee exceptional gripping power in a short time; compact, because it was designed for delicate demolitions characterized by verytight moving spaces, where it is fundamental to guarantee an optimalvisibility for the operator, and therefore absolute safety; fast, becauseit is equipped with continuous hydraulic rotation that greatly reducesthe necessity for maneuvers, and therefore reduces the time neededto move the machine.Rotating Hydraulic Pulverizer FR SeriesThe possibility to execute the two distinct phases of demolition(primary and secondary) with only one machine is the dream ofevery professional working in this sector: to be able to utilize a singleexcavator, without having to substitute the equipment, guaranteesimportant economic advantages and noticeably reduces the demolitiontime. This is the difficult problem that was resolved by Trevi Benne, with the FR Series rotating hydraulic pulverizer, a hybrid productthat allows the operator to tackle both phases of demolition with onemachine, thanks to its unique characteristics. The continuous hydraulicrotation allows for perfect jaws functioning, thanks to the possibilityof reducing movements to a minimum, and therefore working with ahigh level of precision; the ample configuration of the jaws used onthis model, typical of standard demolition model, and the presenceof two inter-changeable and reversible blades for iron cutting in theframework, permit the FR Series to operate as a crusher with thesame efficiency.Marilyn Hydraulic Shears CS SeriesDesigned for modern industrial demolition sites that require significantcutting strength at considerable heights and for scrap metal and ironor similar material recycling professionals. Structural and aestheticimprovements have been introduced in the latest versions, seeking tooffer an increasingly reliable piece of equipment that caters for theneeds of the client/user. In order to help cutting the material at thetop, the shape of the interchangeable tip blade has been amended, thedimensions of the guide blade have been increased, the cylinder hasbeen installed in a backward position so as to provide total protectionfor the shaft and protection has been created for the blade screw holesso as to prevent wear. The design of the mouth and the positioning ofthe blades make it possible to obtain linear, clean cuts in the scrap metal, meaning that loading operations can be simplified and thus reducinghandling and transport costs. For further technical info about demolition, recycling and earthmovingattachments go to www.trevibenne.it.Trevi Benne has proved itselves as the no oneinternational supplier of real monster jaws, oversized hydraulic demolition and recycling attachmentsfor really heavy duty task. Allied-GatoAllied-Gator, Inc. salesand marketing managerMike Ramuncannot help but smilewhen he thinks aboutthe new 39,000m 2manufacturing facilitythat the companyis constructingas an expansion toits Youngstown, Ohio, headquarters in the US.Designed and built around Allied-Gator’s newest productiontechnologies and equipment, this major expansion willhelp accelerate the production of Allied-Gator’s line of hydraulicattachments including the patented MT Series Multi-Toolwhile also meeting the company’s exacting manufacturingstandards.“We focus on innovation”The company is even utilizing the MT Series Multi-Tool aroundthe construction site, performing tasks such as the precisioncuttingof rebar for use in concrete columns and foundations andthe separation and downsizing of foundation fill material.“We focus on innovation,” says Ramun. “We know thedemolition industry well and understand the ever-increasing pressureour customers face to improve efficiency and productivity. Soit makes sense that we apply the same approach to manufacturingour products. Everything we invest in the quality of our precisionmanufacturing processes pays off many times over in the performanceand durability our products provide in the field.”But while Ramun characterizes the new facility as being amajor leap in Allied-Gator’s manufacturing capabilities, it will notalter the values that have defined the company since it was foundedin 1973 by Mike’s father, company President John Ramunand grandfather, Mike Ramun. “As a family business, our reputationis very important to us,” he says. “From the compositionof our product line to our approach to development and testing,Allied-Gator does things differently than any other manufacturer.Customers who purchase our tools also benefit from our decadesof experience with heavy industrial tool design, our dedication tocontinual product improvement and innovation, as well as ourcommitment to offering a superior product.”Since Allied-Gator introduced the MT Series Multi-Tool linein 2001, customers have benefited from a wealth of versatility aswell. Available in 11 sizes from 360kg to 23.5t, customers canutilize the MT Series Multi-Tool with patented Allied-GatorQuick-Change Shear and Cracker/Crusher Jaw Sets onmachines ranging from skid steers and compacts to super-sizedexcavators. “Every time you give contractors another degreeof versatility, you’re saving them money and increasing theircapacities by giving them the ability to effectively competewhere they couldn’t before,” says Ramun.Tough demolition in AlaskaVersatility, not to mention reliability and durability, areparticularly critical in remote work locations, a fact thatproject manager of Anchorage, Alaska-based demolitioncontractor Coldfoot Environmental Ron Tharaldson knowsall too well.In Valdez, Alaska, Coldfoot used the MT Series Multi-Tool model MTR 20 to completely remove a large commercialfish processing plant as part of a waterfront redevelopmentproject. Once the plant’s massive steel structure was removedwith the Shear Jaw Set, Coldfoot immediately relocated thetool across town to demolish a 7,250m 2 , heavily reinforcedconcrete hospital structure with the Cracker/Crusher Jaw Setto make way for a new medical facility. Built following the1964 Alaskan earthquake, the existing hospital structure wasdesigned mostly of 610mm thick concrete floors, ceilings, andwalls filled with 32mm diameter rebar to more than withstandeven stronger earthquakes.Despite having a window of fewer than 120 days tocomplete both assignments, “the Allied-Gator MT helpedus eliminate several hundred man hours and at least 200machine hours, finishing the projects over one month aheadof schedule,” says Tharaldson, who credits the tool’s powerand his team’s ability to change jaws quickly and continually18 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

’s expansionthroughout each project.Tharaldson adds that the MTR 20 and a single 25 t excavatorremoved and processed 8,774m 3 of concrete from thehospital site alone. “It was unbelievable,” he says. “Even withall that heavy concrete and rebar, we never even wore out ourfirst set of teeth on this tool.”While not all demolition projects take place in such extremeconditions, contractors are finding that adaptable tools are thekey to ensuring productivity. And that, Ramun says, is whatmakes the MT Series Multi-Tool so valuable. “The tool is predictable, smooth, and precise, and there’s always a surplus of powerto work with,” he says. “That allows contractors to get their workdone more efficiently, safeguard their operators from unnecessaryrisks, and keep maintenance costs to a minimum.”These MT features allow contractors to perform extremelyhigh-volume projects with surprisingly small equipment andcrews. For example, Eslich Wrecking Co., Canton, Ohio, wascontracted to completely strip out the interior of a 372,000m 2former Ford van plant in Loraine, Ohio, to make way for anindustrial warehouse centre. According to Matt Eslich, EslichWrecking’s Scrap Manager, speed and efficiency were crucialelements to the project, as each completed phase of the facilityis rented out by the building owner as storage space.Equipped with a third-member mounted MTR 10 on a6.7t mini excavator, two skid-steers, and one aerial lift for torchmen, the Eslich crew began to tackle the entire plant. Theysubsequently added a third-member MTR 15 on a 13.6t miniexcavator to double productivity. Although limited ceilingheights, emission restrictions, and fuel costs required Eslich touse his company’s smallest machines for the project, “the smallMTs cut all the double-walled channel iron and even the toolrail we used to have to torch,” he says. “Our operators are muchmore accurate because they don’t have to guess at what they arecutting; they can see it. The accuracy of this tool has enabledus to cut right to the bottom of the truss lines without twistingthe bar joist. These tools cut scrap clean, which has reduced ouramount of torching on this project by more than half.”Transitional timesThe MT Series Multi-Tool’s shearing and crushing capabilitieswill be especially important to contractors as more states andlocalities heighten their focus on recycling to reduce the amountof salvageable demolition materials being sent to landfills.“Many contractors are struggling with this issue, but it actuallyopens the door to some very attractive opportunities,” saysRamun. “Traditionally, contractors had to go out of their wayto process demolition materials to this degree, but contractorsusing the Multi-Tool find themselves preparing the materialsas they demolish. This results in safer and more controlleddemolition methods, more sellable products, and lowered costsfor hauling and land filling. That’s good for the environment, the community, and the contractor’s bottom line.”Ramun adds that materials recycling is but one of themany new operational challenges that demolition contractorswill have to contend with in the coming years. “Change isinevitable for everyone, which overall is good for the industry,”he says. “But we will soon reach the point where demolitioncontractors who use traditional methods will find it even harderto compete and perform effectively in the industry withoutthese new technologies.”The added capacity and production capabilities ofAllied-Gator’s new manufacturing facility will be instrumentalin helping demolition contractors address these and otherindustry challenges. Long-term plans call for adding evenmore specialized products designed to meet the increasingdemands of special demolition and heavy scrap recyclingapplications. “The Allied-Gator pipeline is full of new ideas,”says Ramun. “We’re looking forward to sharing the benefitsof our future products with demolition industry professionalsin the coming years.”www.alliedgator.comIs s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h • PDi 19

Under water wire sawing in MexicoHusqvarna’s versatile wire saw, CS2512, is used to saw concrete foundationsfor a 400m long pier, destroyed byhurricane Wilma. The hurricanes that hitNorth and Central Americahave provided a greatdeal of work for theconstruction industry. InCozumel, Mexico, Husqvarna’sversatile wiresaw, CS 2512, has beenused to saw concretefoundations for a 400 mlong pier, destroyed byhurricane Wilma in theautumn of 2005.On the CS 2512 (left), the drive wheel is located on the outputside of the machine so that slack in the wire never occurs inthe machine even when the feeding power is low. The adjustablepressure valve provides accurate control of the sawingoperation and superior performance.Above Professional divers are monitoring the sawing, while one person remains on the pier and runs the wire saw.At the end of 2006 Husqvarna Construction Products was contactedby Mexican company SSA to help find the right tools and equipmentto clean up after Wilma had demolished one of the piers at Cozumel,an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico’s YucatánPeninsula. Tourism is the main income of Cozumel, and the400 m long pier is to be reconstructed without disturbing the cruiseship traffic. “The concrete is being cut into 40 t blocks which arelifted by a pantone crane,” says Husqvarna Construction ProductsUS product manager Johan Ekström. “The demanding work isdone by divers at a depth of more than 20 m and is carried out atnight, when there are no ships at the pier.”“Wire sawing best option”The alternative to cutting the concrete would be to crush it whichwould end up on the sea bed and need to be removed. The equipmentselected by the company responsible for the cutting workCobusa was the Husqvarna CS 2512 wire saw. “The CS 2512 is atleast 30% more efficient than a traditional wire saw, thanks to itsmagazine capacity, which allows for 12 m of wire to be stored. It’salso very versatile and easy to set up,” says Cobusa vice presidentAlberto Esquitin. His team was completelynew to wire sawing so trainingwas necessary. “The on sitetraining was very valuable, itmade us feel comfortable withthe equipment, knowing thatHusqvarna fully supported us,”says Alberto Esquitin.Every day, after the cruiseships left the harbour, theCobusa team set to work. Aftertwo hours of rigging, sawingTalk about on site training.Johan Ekström fromHusqvarna took divinglessons in order to helpout on the project. Herehe does thumbs up for thefirst wire saw cut.A lot of preparations are required asthe sawing is done under water. Noelectricity is needed on the site thanksto Husqvarna’s Smart Box, with remotecontrol connected to the PP 3030 dieselpower pack.begins. Two divers monitor the sawing, while one person, remainson the pier to run the wire saw and stay in contact with the diversby camera and microphone. The total area to be cut was estimatedto be about 2500 m 2 . “We make one cut every night, which is about12 m 2 . So far, we have delivered two wire saws and the wire, C 760to Cousa. When the work is finished in spring 2008, more than 500m of wire will have been used.” says Johan Ekström.Sawing with diamond wire is the most efficient way to removelarge concrete constructions such as foundations and bridges, orto make holes in thick walls. The big advantage of wire sawing isthat there is basically no limit to the depth that can be cut. Anotheradvantage is that the noise level is reduced considerably. The Husqvarna CS 2512, in combination with the hydraulicunit PP 455 E, is a powerful and easy to use wire saw. It can handlevery large jobs while, at the same time, being sufficiently compactand mobile to handle smaller jobs. It can be used for a wide range ofapplications, both on the ground or mounted on walls. On the CS2512, the drive wheel is located on the output side of the machineso that slack in the wire never occurs in the machine even when thefeeding power is low. The adjustable pressure valve provides accuratecontrol of the sawing operation and superior performance. Themachine is easy to rig and many cuts can be made directly withoutexternal pulley wheels. The concrete is being cut into 40 t blocks which are liftedwith a pantone crane. The demanding work is done bydivers at a depth of more than 20 m.24 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

She enjoys being an operator as eachday is so different. PP Drill & Cut carry out manydemolishing jobs in different places in centralSweden, so as an operator work is normally amaximum of one week at each site. When asked if working with this equipment isheavy work, Maria does not find this to be the caseand has only once had to ask for help. At timesthere is pressure in the job and that is when anexperienced operator is required. Already in use at some of the 25demolition projects currently being carried outby Squibb Demolition around the country, thenew Bobcat skid-steers were specified andsupplied by compact loader and attachmentspecialist, Versatile Equipment Limited, ofSouthfleet in Kent. The Bobcat skid-steers being used bySquibb Demolition comprise a mixture ofcompact 463 and S130 models suited tothe confined space work found in demolitionand other areas of building and construction. All the skid-steer loaders bought by SquibbDemolition are working on solid tyres, with theS130 models equipped with industrial grapplebuckets and the 463 machines using standardbuckets. Both sizes of machine are being usedto gather and collect demolition spoil and loadthe waste into large containers on the SquibbDemolition sites. The 463 and S130 models are part of acomplete range of Bobcat skid-steer loaderscovering operating weights from 1301 to 3821kg and rated operating capacities from 329 to1400 kg. As well as compactness, the otheraspects of Bobcat skid-steers that contributeto their high manoeuvrability are their ability toturn around in their own length and fast cycletimes. They can do more work in less timethan it takes conventional material-handlingequipment. In addition, with controls that allowfor precise movements, even in the tightest ofspaces, Bobcat skid-steers ensure safe, efficientoperation at all times in areas inaccessibleto traditional machines.“The Bobcat skid-steer is a tried andtested machine which meets the exactingrequirements found on our demolition sites, which are among the biggest in the UK,” saysSquibb Demolition Plant Manager Dawn Power.“After years of hiring all our machines in, wehave purchased the new Bobcat skid-steers aspart of a drive to increase our self-sufficiencyand to increase our control over costs. We areaiming to provide over 70% of our needs fromour own internal fleet in the future.”Squibb Demolition has also formed its owninternal tool hire operation, which includes theBobcat skid-steers in the fleet, and Gary Hindlehas joined the company as Small Plant Managerwith responsibility for this area.A prominent member of the NationalFederation of Demolition Contractors, SquibbDemolition can trace the company’s rootsback to 1948, when the founder, Harry TSquibb, started the business for the demolitionand clearance of large areas of East Endtenements after the Second World War. Duringthe intervening years, the company continuedto expand and early in 2008, will celebrate its60th anniversary.Harry Squibb’s son, Leslie, joined thecompany in 1969 and is the present Chairman, whilst his son, who is also called Leslie, is nowManaging Director. Breaker andcompactors fromIdromeccanicaAt Samoter, Idromeccanica Italiana will display awide range of breakers including the “M” series, which are for use on every type of excavator. This range matches the newest machines beingequipped with pressurized oil systems meaning thatthey are able to tolerate counter-pressure other thanbeing able to work with a small amount of oil. The“M” series is being further enlarged as the breakersItalian firm Promove will present at Samotertwo new models of hydraulic breakers: XP70,the baby hammer designed to fit 800 kg classof miniexcavators, which is becoming more andmore popular, and XP1000, the new all-rounderto fit excavators from 12 to 22 tons.Constant development attitude is the mainreason of PMV’s success and the mother ofall their new machines. This hammer sharesmany of the features of the XP series likeblank-firing prevention system, no-accumulatorand no-diaphragm system for high reliabilityand easy maintenance, silenced casing, highback pressure allowed. This last concept helpsthe installation of the hammer on very smallmachines, avoiding all the job to realise a lowpressure backline on the hydraulics of theexcavator. Today many of the hammer hydrauliccircuits come from the manufacturer and veryoften have the back line pressurised (10-15 bar),consequently the low back pressure hammerscannot be fitted without further costs and workon the machine. It will be the right friend for all the small activities,in civil works, gardening, indoor demolitionand digging and similar applications, with excellentproductivity and reliability, and absolutely lowmaintenance requirements.XP1000, another new product, will fill thegap between XP800 and XP1200. Competitorsin this range have full compliance with all themachines on the market, model by model, so itwas necessary to cover the distance with this newmodel, lighter than XP1200 but with the sameperformances and features. It is designed sharingsame technical advantages of other XP mid-sizeand large hammers, including auto-greasingsystem, frequency vs. energy adjustment valveand underwater ready.Furthermore, Promove looks at the future ofdemolition developing bigger demolition tools forbigger jobs and to fit large excavators (80-130tons). Aware about difficulties of this segmentof the market, Promove wants to be among theare also featured by a simple design, which makesservicing easy. Among the compactors, the newC910 compactor will be exhibited. US Denucci Excavating invests in a C-12+The US company Denucci Excavating based inBristol, Pennsylvania has been in the business ofdemolition and excavation for the past 40 years.Since experiencing rapid growth over the last twelvemonths Denucci has expanded its workforce andnow employs 24 people. On the production side, machinery is also being updated to meet demandas more excavated demolition materials are produced, resulting in an increase in onsite crushingand screening. To cope with the extra demand thecompany needed to find a high valuesolution that offered long termbenefits. Denucci decidedto upgrade the crushingequipment togive a bet-the very latest maintenance, control and automationtechnology, allowing for greater control and providingmore efficient and productive operation. These key features include:• Central greasing system as standard.• Over band magnet ensuring the removal of anyconcrete reinforcing bars.• Computer designed web and flange chassis forstrength and flexibility.Key to the reliability and performance of the C12+is the Vogel automatic centralised lubrication system, ensuring that bearings of the machine always getthe optimal amount of lubricant. By lubricating thebearing frequently, with small amounts of grease, theC12+ Vogel automatic lubrication system eliminatesover-greasing as well as lack of lubrication. Thismeans less wear, less downtime, less cost for repairsand spare parts. In addition the use of an over bandmagnet ensures the removal of any reinforcingbars when concrete is crushed, a timesaving feature that alsoG EQUIPMENTter returnon time andenergy spent, whileoffering better consistency ofproduct size. To fulfil this brief, DenucciExcavating chose to go with Extec’s range ofmobile crushers.Denucci decided to invest in a C12+ jawcrusher. Recycling “Combi System”makes a differenceCentral Demolition, based in Bonnybridge,Scotland, has invested in a new recycling plant.Combining General Kinematics, Powerscreenand Kiverco equipment, all sourced from BlueMachinery Scotland, Central Demolition hasadded to its existing recycling plant and createda tandem configuration of recycling machinesto process large volumes of construction anddemolition waste for the production of a widerange of saleable reclaimed materials. CentralDemolition is reclaiming between 90%-95%from the thousands of tonnes of raw wastematerial at its Bonnybridge recycling station, which are brought in from its own demolitionand site clearance contracts as well as materialsreceived from other sources throughout Scotlandand the North East of England.Central Demolition is a multi-disciplinedorganisation specialising in demolition and dismantling, licensed asbestos removal, earthmoving, site clearance, plant and tipper hire, landfilland recycling. The company is a member of theNational Federation of Demolition Contractorsand complies with all the requisite industry standardsand techniques. Formed in 1993, CentralDemolition has evolved to become a nationalleading organisation in its specialist fields, withbroad expertise in all its activities. The companyhas always placed great emphasis on investing inthe best possible plant and equipment for its variousoperations and has enjoyed a long and beneficialworking relationship with Blue MachineryScotland. “We look on Blue Machinery Scotlandas our one-stop-shop for all our recycling needsand their range of distributorships allows us tomix and match equipment to suit our processes,”says Central Demolition Managing Director RossCraig. “Blue Machinery is an expert in their fieldand we know we can rely on their skills rightfrom the planning stage through to installationand commissioning. In addition we find that theirafter sales product support through Spares UKis prompt and efficient, keeping any downtimeto an absolute minimum”.Central Demolition has installed a numberof additional recycling machines to furtherenhance primary and secondary reclamation ofrecyclables from, predominantly, constructionand demolition waste. The new plant consists ofa Grizzly Separator from General Kinematics, aConveyor and a five bay Picking Station systemfrom Kiverco. These lead to a General KinematicsDe-stoner and a Powerscreen 615 Trommel, which carry out the final secondary screeningand stockpiling. The compatibility of all thesediffering marques has allowed Central Demolitionto configure the installation so that the processingsequence is as effective and automatedas possible, with a potential for further add-onequipment should the need arise.Incoming raw waste is first pre-sortedautomatically by the GK Grizzly Separator. The resulting material is then conveyed to theunder-cover picking station for manual sortingto designated bins. From here, the final stagesare through the GK De-stoner and PowerscreenTrommel 615, which separate, screen andstockpile as a secondary process. The De-stonerworks in conjunction with the trommel to cleanup the mid-size material after the inert fineshave been removed at 10mm. The resultingclean 10mm-180mm is then combined with theclean hardcore from the primary recycling stagefor crushing by a TEREX Pegson XR400 mobilecrusher to produce recycled aggregates. From the large daily tonnages of wastethat come into their recycling station, CentralDemolition is able to reclaim an increased rangeof clean saleable materials, including ferrousand non-ferrous metals, recycled aggregatesin various specified sizings, composting, soilimprovement and landfill cover materials, board, timber and paper.www.bluemachinery.comRockster Recyclerbridges the gapWith landfill costs rising across Europe, transportdistances increasing from point of extraction todelivery, as well as competition becoming moreand more intense in all sectors of manufacturing, savings must be sought in every possible way.Rockster Recycler compact mobile plantsare becoming more and more commonplace inall manufacturing sectors as a very useful toolto help gain a competitive advantage in profitsthrough savings. The first-ever underwater bridge demolitionproject in Chinawas carried out usinga Hilti DS WS15electric wire saw. Areport from “under thebridge” in Shanghai.Controlled underwater demolitionThe Henan Road Bridge - originally a wooden structure, butrebuilt in 1928 in reinforced concrete - carried traffic overShanghai’s Suzhou Creek for around 80 years. However, itwas not only beginning to show its age, it also stood in theway of the construction of a new Shanghai subway line. In2007 it was thus decided that the bridge had to go. A new, wider 6-lane bridge, designed to reflect the lines of the oldbridge, would be built to replace it.In this important project, the needs of contractorShanghai Jiankebuqiang Ltd. were looked after by diamondspecialists Wenson Liu and Tommy Li of Hilti China. Theentire bridge had to be cut into a number of individualsections. The extensive underwater operations requiredpresented the biggest challenge as a team of divers wouldhave to use special equipment to cut through the bridgepiers under water.6 professionals - 5 monthsA task force of six experienced demolition engineers workedon the project for a total of five months. The sawing operationitself took one month. To begin with, some delicatework involving removal of all frescos and decorative elementsfrom the old Henan Bridge had to be carried out. These were to be incorporated in the new bridge. The Hilti D LP32 / DS TS32 wall saw system wasthen used to cut away the bridge parapet. TYROLIT Cutting PInternational championship in profesBelow the wall sawblade WSH*** from TYROLITFinally, the first competition of its kind is organised by TYROLIT for the international concrete sawingand drilling industry. For years there has been a lot of talking locally about organising concretesawing and drilling competions between professional concrete cutters. In some cases this type ofchampionship has taken place but never before internationally. TYROLIT has taken the initiative andis now, after months of extensive planning launching the first international competition involvingprofessional concrete cutters. PDi will take an active part in the tournament covering each step ofthe competion including the “Grand Finale” in January 2009.44 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

o Competitionsional concrete sawing and drillingIn 2008, TYROLIT organizes the first international competitionin concrete drilling and sawing: the TYROLIT Cutting Pro Competition. And the idea is that professional users from the industrydemonstrate their abilities in wall sawing, core drilling and handsawing. Winner and runner-up of every national championshipwill be invited to participate in the European Championshipin Austria in January 2009. The participating companies, allcompetitors and the winners can look forward to receiving attractiveprizes.“Power, Know-how and Ambition”20 athletes will participate in every national championship. Inmany countries the selection will be done by means of qualifyingtournaments. The TYROLIT Cutting Pro Competition presentsconcrete cutting and drilling as a sports challenge: Power, KnowHow and Ambition of the athletes will decide between winningand losing. Every national competition will last - including theaward ceremony - about half a day. It will take place parallel toa local TYROLIT fair and thereby creates an attractive event forprofessional users, customers and visitors.Standard Rules and RegulationsThe TYROLIT Cutting Pro Competition uses a standardised setof regulations that allows for fair competitions and internationallycomparable results. In addition, machines, tools, concrete and allother competition material are defined and conditioned to guaranteethat every athlete can compete on the same terms.Exercises and ProductsAthletes compete against each other in three exercises: wall sawing, core drilling and hand sawing. The time is taken for everyexercise, the participant with the fastest total time wins. On thestage, every exercise is performed by two athletes in parallel. Theresult is an exciting competition that is intuitively understandableand attractive for spectators.Wall sawing:The goal of this exercise is to saw a slice off a reinforced concreteblock as quickly as possible. The cut has to be performed in atleast two passes. An optimal performance will depend on onehand on the ideal cutting depth of the first and second pass. Onthe other hand, the feeling of the athlete for machine, tool andconcrete will be decisive. The wall sawing system consists of the TYROLIT wall sawhead WZ and the hydraulic power pack PPH25RR***. Thisaggregate directs the power of 25 kW by means of a radioremote control system onto the TYROLIT diamond wallsaw blade WSL*** (diameter 825 mm).Core drilling:In this exercise the athletes have to drill a hole in a reinforcedconcrete block. With the start signal, the drill righas to be mounted and motor plus core drill have to befixed before the drilling can begin. The installation of thedrilling system requires skill and experience. A fast drillingtime will depend on applying the right pressure onthe core drill. For this exercise, a state-of-the-art TYROLITsystem consisting of the drill rig HCCB-5 and the drillmotor DME32S*** (electric) will be used. The core bitCDL*** has a diameter of 102 mm.Hand sawing:A disc has to be cut off from a concrete tube. Power and knowhowof the athlete in dealing with the one-handed angle grinderare essential for this task. The set-up consists of a petrol-driven,one-handed angle grinder (5 kW) that powers the TYROLITdiamond saw blade DCU*** (diameter 350 mm). The cutting isdone in wet conditions with the water directed into the cut overthe concrete tube and not via the machine.SafetyIn order to take part in the TYROLIT Cutting Pro Competition, the athletes must have proficiency and experience in the commandof the machines and tools. In addition, the regulations specify themandatory protective equipment for every exercise. On the stage, the movements of the competitors are limited to safety areas thatare clearly marked.Further informationThe website www.cuttingprocompetition.com provides furtherinformation on competition dates, registration processes, regulations, etc. in the respective national language.www.cuttingprocompetition.comwww.tyrolit.comTYROLIT Schleifmittelwerke Swarovski KGand the construction divisionWith 80,000 products, TYROLIT is part of the Swarovski group and is one of thelargest manufacturers of tools for grinding, cutting, drilling and dressing, as well asmachines for the construction industry. Renewed Focus PutsJCB on Demolition MapJCB has been active inthe demolition industryfor as long as mostof us can rememberbut the company’srenewed focus on thesector in recent yearshas paid dividends, asPDi’s Mark Anthonyreports.Below JCB General Manager - Waste,Recycling and Demolition JonathanGarnham at the recent EDA Conventionin Vienna.A visit to the JCB World Headquarters in Staffordshire,England is an impressive mix of the traditional to thethoroughly modern.Focus on DemolitionThe company’s manufacturing and parts facility are state-ofthe-art;the buildings high-tech; the technology advanced. But this is a company that is clearly still in touch with itsroots. Some of JCB’s original machines are still on display,a constant reminder of Joseph Cyril Bamford, the man whogave his initials to the company and its most famous progeny:the JCB backhoe loader. Elsewhere, photographs lining thewalls chart the company’s evolution from local agriculturalequipment supplier to global manufacturer. And visitors donot have to search too hard to see that the company has beenactive in the demolition industry, at least in its native UK,since its first foray into the hydraulic excavator market.Yet what the company has achieved in the demolition sectorin the distant past pales beside what it has done in the past fewyears. “Demolition is a market sector that requires a high degreeof expertise and focus,” explains, JCB General Manager - Waste,Recycling and Demolition Jonathan Garnham. “Around threeyears ago, the company took the decision to give this importantsector the focus it requires, setting in place a team of people whoare charged with responding to the specific needs of demolitioncompanies.”That decision has proved to be as successful as it wastimely. The company has enjoyed 25% year-on-year growthin sales of its demolition specification excavators, a trend thatstarted in the UK but which has now spread to areas includingItaly, Spain, Germany and Russia. Even more telling was aprogramme of focussed commitment to the UK’s NationalFederation of Demolition Contractors during 2006. “Wehave always worked very closely with the NFDC but in 2006,we sponsored the Federation’s annual convention in Barcelonaand also hosted our own ‘Demolition Day’ that was attendedby many of their members,” says Garnham. As a directresult, the companysold 30 demolitionspecification excavatorsto NFDC membercompanies, 28 of themto companies that hadnot previously run JCBmachines.JCB is a past-masterof intelligent andtargeted marketing.Yet for all its talk offocus, sponsorship andevent hosting, it is themachines behind thestory that have madethe difference. The rangeThe company offers arange of four hydraulicexcavators that arebuilt to Xtra Duty specification: the JS220, JS260, JS330and JS460. Of these, the JS330 is additionally offered ina Modular Joint and high reach boom configuration thattakes the working height to 21 m. Featuring the standardXD Level II FOPS cab, engine pre-cleaner and heavy-dutyundercarriage, the high reach derivative of the JS330 alsoincludes additional counterweight, a modified cab witha tilting seat, additional guarding and a slow slew speedcapability. A tilting cab is offered as an option. Factoryor dealer fit options include additional work lights, boommountedCCTV camera, automatic greasing and dustsuppression systems.“In high reach configuration, the JS330XD is thelargest machine we manufacture with a high reach boom,”says Garnham. “Unlike high reach machines modifiedby third-party manufacturers, our high reach equipmentIs s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h • PDi 47

and machines are designed and built to work together seamlessly. This also allows us to factor in many unique customerrequirements such as straight booms or the ability to run onbiodegradable oils, for example.”Equally important is the fact that JCB’s ability to designand build everything allows the company to keep its machinessimple and easy to operate. “Our XD machines are robust, durable, powerful and reliable but it is their simplicity thatis the primary reason for their popularity,” adds Garnham.“We worked very closely with the NFDC when they producedtheir high reach guidance notes and we have been at the cuttingedge of high reach demolition machine design. But weare always mindful that our machines are required to workin parts of the world that don’t have the same demands andstandards. Our machines are, therefore, designed to be aseasy-to-use and maintain as possible.”“Health, saftey and regulationsthe key drivers”Garnham reports that he is watching with considerableinterest the development of the world’s first 90 m high reachmachine and says that he has witnessed a growing customertrend towards heavier, lower reach machines with the abilityto wield huge hydraulic attachments. However, he firmly believes that health and safety demandsand regulations will be the key drivers in the ongoingdevelopment of demolition specification excavators in thefuture. “Whole Body Vibration is a major concern both toregulatory bodies and to manufacturers like ourselves. Allof our machines are thoroughly tested for vibration levels andwe are constantly striving to reduce operator exposure,” heconcludes. “Demolition excavators in the future might bebigger and they might be able to carry ever larger attachmentsbut one thing is absolutely certain. They will be safer, bothfor the operator and for those working alongside him.”www.jcb.com48 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

Wecan also team with our parent company to pursue design-buildand turnkey projects.”Cleveland Wrecking’s many notable projects include highprofileassignments such as the eight-month demolition andabatement of the historic Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. While such projects are usually associated with brute force, the500-room steel, brick, and concrete building, constructed in1921, required something of a delicate touch, including handremovalof historic items from the kitchen pantry where RobertKennedy was assassinated. The Ambassador’s North Wing had to be removed onefloor at a time to protect the hotel’s one surviving component,an annex that included the storied Coconut Grove nightclub andwill become part of a new high school being constructed on thesite. More than 40,000 t of concrete and brick were removedin 2,600 loads, while 3,366 t of steel was salvaged. ClevelandWrecking also played a supporting role in the demolition ofSeattle’s Kingdome indoor sports arena. After implosion of theconcrete dome, which stood approximately 76 m high and 201min diameter, Cleveland Wrecking used conventional demolitionmethods to process 46,000 m 3 of rubble at an on-site crushingplant. All recycled aggregate materials were used for constructionof a new football and soccer stadium at the site. One of the firm’s more technically challenging assignmentsinvolved the demolition of three office towers bounded on foursides by busy streets in downtown Los Angeles for the CaliforniaDepartment of Transportation.Because the three, five, and six-storey buildings were posttensionedstructures, the project team installed additional shoringand bracing on the ground floor to provide continuous structuralintegrity of the building while the floors were removed one at atime using hydraulic hammers followed by heavy wrecking. Approximately6,000 t of material was hauled offsite for recyclingand reuse, with remaining material crushed and left on-site forstructural fill.Although specializing in large-scale projects often putsCleveland Wrecking in the spotlight, some of the firm’s mostnotable accomplishments are those that largely go unnoticed bythe public. As part of its demolition of several structures linkingthe San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and downtown SanFrancisco for CalTrans, Cleveland Wrecking was given only a50 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

ig Picturesingle weekend to remove the 1,800 feet Fremont Street off-rampand safeguard a new temporary ramp close by.Mobilizing a fleet of 17 track excavators, six loaders, 15 watertrucks, and multiple skid steers and boom lifts, the demolitionteam removed 6,900 m 3 of concrete and 1,500 t of steel in justover 32 hours.Qualified own staffSynchronizing these intricate operations on such a large scalerequires a well-trained workforce, a quality that Martocchio sayshas been an essential element of Cleveland Wrecking’s approach.“We strive to continually improve our processes and create acompany where employees are vested in its success,” she says ofthe firm’s 250 employees. A key factor, she adds, is ClevelandWrecking’s preference to cultivate the talents of its operatorsinternally rather than hiring them from other contractors. “It’schallenging enough to find good operators as it is, but people whocome from other companies often bring their own methods andmindsets that may be counter to the way we do things,” she says.“Instead, we try to hire young people interested in a career, andput them in a mentoring programme that exposes them to boththe office and field sides of the business.” Though more costly,Martocchio says the investment has paid off in both performanceand a very low rate of attrition. “People generally stay here for thelong haul,” she says.Of course, it helps to have an extensive range of equipment todraw from as well. Anchored by Link Belt excavators, ClevelandWrecking’s fleet also includes products from Caterpillar, LaBounty,Atlas Copco and others.“Support and reliability are the biggest things for us,” saysSheridan. “If we don’t have the support from the manufacturer ordealer, we can’t do the project. It’s particularly important becausedemolition is a projection-based industry. Hidden costs such astrash and dump fees or trucks stuck in traffic can cut into yourprofits. So you’d better make sure you have the righttools for the job when you need them.”Even with these valuable assets, ClevelandWrecking’s collective experience may prove tobe the most important factor for navigatingthe numerous uncertainties shrouding theU.S. economy. “Although the industrial andpetrochemical markets are on the rise, the realestate downturn and Iraq War have slowed activityin many other sectors,” says Sheridan. “Thediminishing volume of projects has heightenedcompetition, leading some firms to deliberatelyunderbid projects or tackle assignments that maybe beyond their capabilities.”Sheridan goes on to say that while some projectowners facing their own cost pressures may betempted to take such chances, most clientsrealize demolition work requires acertain level of investment to meetsafety and quality requirements. And the bigger the project, themore important and stringentthose standards become. For that reason,Sheridan adds that Cleveland Wrecking will focus on theinternal factors that it can control. “Going forward, we willcontinue to try to improve our processes,” he says. “Our goalis to work smart, look for growth opportunities, and co-existwith the cost pressures.” He adds that the company will donothing to compromise the safety of its people or the qualityof its services. “We’re interested only in taking on thebest projects in the best way, with good people andthe equipment and resources they need to get thejob done. That’s really the only way we knowhow to do things,” says Sheridan.www.clevelandwrecking.comCleveland Wrecking President Jim Sheridan,a 35-year demolition industryveteran. Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h • PDi 51

ON A RWorld of Concrete Beats tLas Vegas’ allure asa glitzy oasis in thedesert provided a fittingbackdrop to the2008 edition of Worldof Concrete. If only fora few days, attendeescould escape the seeminglyunending swirl ofgloomy economic newsand lose themselvesin the sea of constructionequipment andproducts that filled theLas Vegas ConventionCenter’s expansiveexhibition halls.PDi’s US Editor JimParsons reports.Yet even WOC itself was shrouded with doubts this year. Withthe larger ConExpo poised to occupy the same venue less thantwo months later, would manufacturers do little more than makea half-hearted appearance at WOC? Would attendees likewisedecide that their travel budgets couldn’t support two Vegas visits intwo months, and opt only for the March show? And would thosewho did come to WOC be buyers or merely window shoppers?Second largest in theevent’s 34-year historyAny doubts as to WOC’s drawing power were dispelled with thearrival of more than 84,700 professional registrants and 1,700exhibiting companies, making the 2008 show the second largest inthe event’s 34-year history. And even though WOC 2008 couldn’tescape the economic gloom, with Ed Sullivan, Portland CementAssociation’s chief economist, predicting a bleak constructionmarket for the next three years, confidence was in ample supplyfrom one end of the show floor to the other.“People are here to do business,” asserted CS Unitec presidentTom Carroll. “The housing market may be bad, but the com-mercial and infrastructure markets are fine. And, there are thehigher-end projects that are always there.”Mike Ramun, sales and marketing manager for Allied Gator, was among many exhibitors pleasantly surprised at the largeturnout in a ConExpo year. “For us, this Word of Concrete hasbeen as productive as any other year,” he saidUwe Kausch of Stanley Hydraulic Tools added that professionaldemolition companies are faring much better than theirgeneral contractor counterparts. “They aren’t being affected,” hesaid. “I haven’t seen much change in demand.”Attention gettersPredictions of a watered-down WOC also went unfulfilled with aplentiful selection of new and enhanced product offerings. That thedominant themes were ergonomics, maintenance, and efficiencycame as no surprise to Patricia Stoll of Genesis Attachments. With labour shortages a more immediate concern to demolitioncontractors, “you have to treat operators well,” she said. “You don’twant to lose them.”Among the new products on display was EDCO’s newEDCO marketing director Chuck Hommey demonstrates the company’s new TMC7 7-in. ICS also featuredthe new gas-powered 680GC, the result of a five-year effortto improve its predecessor model (ICS Blount’s 613) with featuressuch as a new airflow design that reduces operating temperatureby 60 ° F cooler.US Saws also took a friendly approach to core drilling withits “Core Daddy” wet coring system, which can drill up to 16-in(406 mm) diameter holes. The ability to cut large diameter holeswith a right-angle corer eliminates the need for a large overheadunit, explains spokesperson Dave Morgan. “All you need is thearea you need to drill,” he said.New alliancesBy far, the most prolific provider of updated products at WOC2008 was Husqvarna, which evidenced its aggressive approach tothe U.S. construction and demolition market with a host of newfeatures such as a three-speed gearbox option for the FS6600 Dand FS 8400 D large flat saws.“The new gearbox increases the saw’s flexibility and allows theoperator to easily match the engine speed with the size of bladerequired for the job,” explained spokesperson Rob Fountain. “Thefront cowling has also been streamlined, making the unit lighterBelow ICS Blount’s Bill Vasta puts a new 680 diamondchain saw through its paces at WOC’s unusually chillyoutdoor demonstration area.Product Specialist Mitch Acton shows off Dixie Diamond’slightweight, large-diameter core bits, which are availablein diameters of up to 48 in.TMC7 combination grinder, which features a three-positionarticulating frame to accommodate any wall angle, plus a multipositionhandle assembly that allows operators to operate the unitin any direction.“This literally replaces four workers, as most contractors willhave that many people doing edge work on their hands and knees,”said EDCO marketing director Chuck Hommey, who also showedthe company’s new DS18 walk behind saw for dual-auger cutting.Constructed of stout 7-gauge steel, the unit also features a heavyduty,anti-vibration engine mount for straighter cutting.Chainsaw shoppers also had plenty to see, as Stihl, Inc., rolledout its new 12-in (305 mm) TS 410 and 14-in (356 mm)TS 420Cutquik® cut-off machines. Both models feature a new X2 AirFiltration System that delivers near-perfect clean air to the machine, eliminating the need for filter maintenance. Better air brings manyother benefits according to Stihl spokesperson Anita Gambill. “Theengine runs cleaner, which increases fuel efficiency and run time by20 %, and cuts emissions nearly in half, “she said. “Vibrations arealso reduced by 43 %, which is a big plus for operators.”ICS Blount, Inc., also introduced its rugged hydraulic 880F4,The beefed-up housing of Allied’sBR3088 boom hammer exemplified atrend toward more durable products. The 50-W wet vac from DustcontrolUSA features a built-in sump pump.Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h • PDi 53

Husqvarna was also one of manycompanies that used as a forum for spotlighting the past year’scorporate acquisitions, making room in its exhibit areas for theearly-entry saws from Soff-Cut, International, Inc., and grindingand polishing equipment from Australia’s King Concepts, whileStanley Hydraulic Tools spotlighted its acquisition of the Cyclonedrop hammer line from Universal Impact Technologies with theDH1500, which delivers a 1,500-ft lb. energy blowTwo other firms promoted a technology trade. DITEQCorporation combined its ARIX TM diamond arrangementmethod with green sawing technology from Cardinal Sawsand Blades to debut a new line of early entry saws with the1.5- and 4.5-hp G-TEQ, which can generate blade speeds ofup to 5,400 rpm.Companies that were not showing new equipment toutedenhancements. Norton Clipper’s 61-hp turbo diesel walk-behinddiesel saw has been redesigned for simpler operation and servicing, and can accommodate up to a 48-inch (1.22 m) blade. AlliedConstruction Products beefed up the housing of its BR3088boom hammer to consistently provide 7,000 ft-lbs of pressurein tough environments. Even with its sturdier structure, theBR3088 can be serviced in the field with common hand tools, minimizing equipment downtime. Many WOC attendees also got their first look at Brokk’smodel 50 remote control demolition robot, which US sales andmarketing director says is well-suited for the American market.“It has a bigger engine and larger hammer than the predecessormodel 40, which many contractors felt was too small,”explained the company’s Henrik Sundgren. “They also like theelectric power and remote control operation for better safety, which gets more important every year.”“Outside of California, it doesn’t seem to be on people’s agendas,”he says, noting that the state typically sets the standard forconsumer and worker protection regulations elsewhere in the U.S.“It will affect everything a contractor does—training, monitoring, and equipment.”But while companies like Delahut’s can come up with theideas to help, “many contractors don’t seem to want to pay forthem until they need it,” he said.CS UNITEC’s Carroll agreed that the dangers of dust have yetto penetrate the mentality of many contractors. “They don’t thinkit’s dangerous, so they’re not spending money on it,” he says.Indeed, pockets of concern could still be found amid despiteWOC’s pervasive optimism. Attitudes seemed most influencedby a manufacturer’s location, product line, and customer base.Often, an exhibitor at one booth described a robust business withfew concerns, while his next-door-neighbor told of slow marketactivity that had everybody worried.Wayne Kowalewski of Apexdia Diamond Products wonderedhow much of the concern was real, and how much was rumor.“The problem is that the news makes them apprehensive, whether they should be or not,” he says, nothing that his area offocus, the Northeast U.S., remains strong. “Things might get a bittight, but the customers are still out there,” he said.Dixie Diamond product specialist Mitch Acton summed upthe feelings of many in predicting that while 2008 might haveslower periods, but will work out for the better.“In the meantime, you have to focus on making yourselfbetter,” he said. “In this kind of economy, that’s the only wayto survive.”Norton Clipper’s 61-hp turbo dieselwalk-behind diesel saw.A mix of prioritiesAlso growing in importance is the need to protect workers fromthe dangers of silica dust, which may soon be subject to stricterfederal exposure limits. A number of products were on displaythat combined protection and productivity, such as the DC 50-Wwet vac from Dustcontrol USA. A built-in sump pump allowsoperators to vacuum and pump at the same time, while a preseparatortraps up to 90 % of the dust before it reaches the filter.“That can help extend the filter’s life and improve productivity,”said spokesperson Chad King.Still, vice president/general manager of MK Diamond Products,Inc. Brian Delahaut, worried that silica safety may be taking aback seat to the economy in the minds of many contractors, evenwith reports of more OSHA-imposed site shutdowns.DITEQ’s G-TEQ saw was one of several early entry sawstargeted at the green concrete market.54 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

Europeand North America make 70% of sales andthe remaining 30% is divided in smalleramounts in the rest of world. However,Teemu Teelahti predicts a huge and dramaticchange in this market division.“Our view is that in 10 to 15 yearsthe above percentage figures have beenchanged vice versa. The centre of gravityin the change is in Asia and naturally moststrongly in India and China. Fortunatelywe belong to a global organization and canadjust our operations to changing demands. In the next five years we will experience a lotof related changes,” says Teemu Teelahti.Demolition bound to grow“Our view is that the biggest growth inthe future in these businesses is offered indemolition. There just the surface has beenscratched and there is indeed a lot to dig.The number of buildings in developingcountries and old infrastructures in thedeveloped world only wait for demolitionand rebuilding,” adds Teemu Teelahti.Sandvik Breakers is ready for theexpansion. Initially the company onlymanufactured hydraulic breakers, butadded demolition tools in the productrange in the early part of 1990’s.“This was a good decision since thedemolition tools business has grown relatively more than thebreaker business. We really don’t see any clouds in the near“Our view is that the biggestgrowth in the future is offeredin demolition”, Mr TeemuTeelahti.Sandvik Breakers MarketingCommunications Manager MrsSatu Rämö.future and expect all our businesses to grow. The need of ourtype of equipment continues practically taken in every cornerof the world, while the best Sandvik breaker countries are thetraditional European ones like France, Germany, Italy, Spainand Britain, and the USA in North America,” says TeemuTeelahti. “In 2007 Rammer sales doubled in France. Spainhas been a good market but right now it is question mark.Italy is still doing fine as is the UK also although it seemsthat the peak has been passed in Britain. Europe and the UScontinue as our best regions. For instance, the US economyis sliding, but we were able to increase our market share there. Also Russia is now a significant market for us.”Tied global competitionThe present Sandvik Breakers is one of the two leaders inglobal markets. The other is the Swedish company AtlasCopco.“It really is quite remarkable that in many areas of machines, particularly in rock drilling and breaking, the competitionis geared around companies located in Finland andSweden. Naturally, when we belong to Sandvik, the owner isSwedish, but since Sandvik Breakers was originally a Finnishcompany and today is located in Finland, we regard ourselvesa Finnish manufacturer rather than a Swedish one. The sametype of competition takes place in drilling machines, whereSandvik and Atlas Copco are the main rivals, but in drillingtoo, the Sandvik base is Finnish because it is located in Finlandand used to be called Tamrock,” says Teemu Teelahti.“In breakers and demolition tools we and Atlas Copco arethe two big ones and of about equal size, while Montabertand Furukawa belong to the next category. But as all in thebusiness know, there are many, many other smaller manufacturersall over the world, particularly in Italy, Japan andKorea. Probably no one has calculated the accurate numberof breaker and demolition tool manufacturers, but the generalestimate is that there are between 60 and 100 manufacturersin the world. In Italy alone, there are14 manufacturers. Smaller manufacturerscome and go. The competition is fierce andunfortunately the situation results in toolow prices. However, I am pretty sure thatalready in the near future, some smallerplayers will disappear. When Rammer wasestablished in 1978, hydraulic breakers werejust emerging new pieces of machinery in theworld, because only the first steps had beentaken after quite many years of pneumatichand tools. Hydraulics proved to be thekey in the development of new breakers, which today are the really efficient way toimprove the demolition and rock-relatedoperations. Today, hydraulic breakers andall sorts of demolition tools are an integralpart of construction, mining and quarrying, and demolition sites. We have accomplisheda lot and will continue to do so.”Natural background a key factorto successThe company’s success has always been basedon the two key elements of product developmentand quality.“It is fortunate that we are locatedin a Northern country where the naturalconditions are difficult. When a piece ofmachinery works here, it works everywhereelse. Finland also has solid bedrock of graniteand other types of hard rock with low overburden, which gives us another good basefor developing the machines to do the job inextremely hard rock,” says Teemu Teelahti.A further advantage of the location is the small size of thecountry. To grow and to be successful the company needed to

There are now twoseparate factory buildings, one for breakers and the other fordemolition tools. The wide range becoming widerAll sorts of construction projects make 80% of Sandvik Breakers’sales and the rest is divided between mining, quarrying, demolition and recycling.Sandvik Breakers has always been in the forefront oftechnical development and hasbrought to the market many innovations. The company’s currentrange of hydraulic breakers is aslarge as can be expected from theleading manufacturer. The breakerrange is next to complete, but indemolition tools the product offeringis incomplete.“We know that in tools we needmore products, but as this businessis expanding we will naturally enlarge our offering and bringnew machines to the market,” says Teemu Teelahti.Innovations bring successRight from the beginning of Rammer the breaker manufacturerhas been in the forefront of technical development. There has been quite a few firsts that later have become industrystandards when the competition has adopted them. Theseinnovative solutions include such cases as the world’s largesthammer manufactured in 1981, the innovative low-noise CitySeries introduced in 1991, and the in-Series of 2004.It all started with the first Rammer hammer. It wasmade so well that there were no teething problems and wasready to market right away.“Quality is the other cornerstone of our operation. We cannot be satisfied with compromises. Good quality alsomakes our after-sales actions easier and naturally results insatisfied customers,” says Teemu Teelahti. A recent exampleis a heat treatment plant erected two years ago. The plant isthe largest such installation in Finland.“Our position is also favourable in that being a part30 years of RammerSandvik Breakers nowready to adjust tochanging marketswith new equipmentof Sandvik means that we have a solid base. The ups anddowns of business affect us only a little, but we are able tocontinue business as usual,” adds Teemu Teelahti.Customer supportSandvik Breakers has introduced quite a few solutionsto make the use of products more economic and safe inthe short and long term. They include the monitoringanalyser system Ramona and the automatic lubricationsystem Ramlube. For customer support there are three central warehouseslocated in Finland, Holland and Singapore, eightfurther regional warehouses and300 local warehouses. The short historyof RammerTo some extent Rammer shares itsearly history with Tamrock. Rammer’sfounding father was TeuvoGrönfors who had previouslybeen the research and developmentmanager of Tamrock. Heleft Tamrock in 1972 and established Rammer in 1978.At that time it was obvious that hydraulic hammers(breakers) were the right way to break rock and concrete. The first hydraulic hammer had been introduced by theFrench company Montabert in 1969, but at the time whenRammer started the biggest manufacturer was the Germancompany Krupp.Soon Rammer penetrated the market with its ownproducts. But to become a worldclass player, the companyrequired more resources than Teuvo Grönfors wasable to offer on his own and he sold Rammer in 1984 tothe Finnish mining company Outokumpu, with a planto invest in mining and construction related equipmentmanufacturing.Teuvo Grönfors continued heading the Outokumpumanufacturing division and in 1984 Outokumpu acquiredRoxon, a manufacturer of jaw crushers and conveyorsbased in a community next to Lahti. But later Outokumpuchanged its strategy and sold Rammer and Roxon to Tamrockin 1997, which at that time was owned by Sandvik.www.sandvik.comIs s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h • PDi 59

“Rammer” breakerscover most applicationsOver the years Rammerand more recentlySandvik Breakers havedeveloped breakerrelatedproducts tocover almost all applicationsfor breakingrock in construction, mining and quarrying. The current rangeof breakers can beinstalled to excavatorsand other carriersfrom 0.7 t to 100 t.More specifically the breakers can be used in primaryand secondary breaking, demolition and recycling, trenchingand underground operations. Sandvik Breakers alsodesigns various types of equipment for boom mounting inopen-pit, crushing, underground and grizzly applications. There is a wide range of applications, since constructionprojects are so versatile. The prime objective of abreaker is to break boulders into smaller pieces and that iswhat they surely do.Breakers include five series called E, G, M, S and in.Altogether there are 47 breaker models. The demolitiontools are used for various demolition and recycling projectsand even for wood chipping. The product range includescutter-crushers, pulverizers and multiprocessors andcan be used to demolish reinforced concreteand scrap metal. As part of the Sandvik relatedintegration, all the former Rammerproducts were given a new modeldesignation. This was a major exercisethat included many other Sandvik productlines.Sandvik moves mountainsA couple of recent applications feature how Sandvik’sbreaker customers have been able to improvetheir operations. The first one is from Spain.A Spanish customer, Excavaciones HermanosOtín Piedrafita, works in the Pyrenean mountainsclose to the French border. The conditions includeseasonal snow and ice and hard rock. The companypurchased a Sandvik hydraulic breaker model BR7013,which. with its weight of 7 t is the largest and most powerfulin Sandvik’s Rammer range. Explaining the reason for thepurchase Tirso Otín said: “Our customers are constantlyseeking safer, faster and more productive solutions to meettheir applications needs and we have always been willingto comply.”The customer has beeninvolved in many majorprojects, such as an undergroundcar park, an ice-skatingrink, a wastewater andsolid waste treatment plantand in many of the region’sski resort development andimprovement schemes. The BR7013 is designedfor use with carriersweighing from 60 to 100t. Equipped with a chiseltool, the hammer developsimpact energy of 15,000Joules. It is supplied withthe Rammer CITY soundsuppression system as standard, reducing noise levelto only 85 dB(A) at 30 m.It is also piped for the Sandvik Rammer dust suppressionpackage. For reduced wear on both the hammer and carrier, vibration dampening is improved and tool diametersare increased. The use of a dust proof housing, dust prooftool retaining pin locking system and the optional Ramlubeautomatic lubrication system also help reduce wear andextend working life.A quarry application in AustraliaIn the latter part of 2007, the Melbourne, Australia basedMountain View Quarries, took delivery of the second 3.8t Sandvik BR4510 hammer for use in their DonnybrookQuarry in North Melbourne. Earlier in the year the companypurchased the first BR4510.The company runs another quarry nearby called Seymour.According to quarry manager Ronnie Ferronato, theoriginal idea was to rotate the hammer between bothquarries, but it soon proved to make commercialsense to purchase the second one. “We are happywith the performance of the breaker and nowwe have the added advantage of having commonparts across two units as well as the same companyservicing them,” says Ronnie Ferronato, who alsosays that in addition to breakers, the companyoperates other Sandvik equipment, includinga mobile crushing plant, a cone crusher and adrilling rig.The local Sandvik distributor, WalkersHammers, believes strongly in after-sales supportand customer training. “When we delivera breaker it’s not a case of attaching it to theexcavator and away you go,” says Walkers Hammerssales and product support manager TinoVinella. “Prior to delivery one of our factorytrained service technicians visits the site to ensurethat everything will run smoothly. A breaker isa major capital investment and the customerexpects long and trouble free working hours fromit. The better we train the personnel the betteris the end result.”The efficient breaker quartet consists of the hammerand three gentlemen from left to right: John Miltosof Sandvik, Alex ‘Archie’ Tosto, the operator, and TinoVinella of Walkers Hammers.60 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

In the 1990s when purpose built wire saws becamecommon it took a long time before HCP replaced their combisaw with a new pure wire sawing system. In the beginning ofthis century all manufacturers started to launch high frequencyequipment but not HCP. But now is the time for HCP to settheir first high frequency wall saw to the world. If WS 440 HFis as well designed as the wire saw it probably will be a successamong the users.“Based on a new technology”“With the WS 440 HF we are setting a new standard forelectrical wall saws,” says Husqvarna Construction ProductsProduct Manager Lars Gustafsson. “The saw is based on totallynew technology, which gives the user increased possibilitiesfor fast and efficient sawing. We have succeeded in optimizingthe weight to power relationship and developed a saw that islight and flexible but also powerful, something that was difficultto achieve before. The powerful, water-cooled electric motorgenerates a total of 13 kW to the shaft, despite the fact that thesaw only weighs 25 kg.”Characteristics thatimproves cutting performanceThe saw was developed with the greatest focus on the user aspossible. It has a variable speed transmission, which makesit possible to set optimal speed according to blade diameter, blade type, and the material that is being sawed. This meansthat the diamonds cut with a high level of efficiency. Inaddition, rotation direction can be selected, which means that the water spray canbe controlled independent of whichside of the rail you saw on. TheseProduct news from DieweOne of Germany’s leading manufacturer of top qualitydiamond tools - Diewe Diamantwerkzeuge - hasdeveloped a brand new Diamond Drilling line. Thisinnovative product range consists of: 3 drill motormodels - 2000/2500/3000 Watt, 2 Drilling rigmodels - max. Ø 200 / 350 mm and 3 Productlines of drill bits – dry / wet / fast. With these new products all drilling appliciationswhich occur in the construction industry can becovered. All of these premium quality products havebeen engineered and fine tuned during an extensiveresearch and development programme. The result of this will be introduced to the“world” during the Eisenwarenmesse / PracticalWorld exhibition in Cologne - Germany from9-12th March 2008. The product introduction willbe supported by an extensive marketing campaignto intensify the overall use of (Diewe) DiamondDrilling equipment in the construction industry. TheDiewe booth on Practical World, Cologne, Germanycombined characteristics make theWS 440 HF totally unique thecompany claims.“Making our users’ work easieris the driving force in all ourproduct development andwe have invested a greatdeal of resources in makingthe saw user-friendly,powerful, ergonomic andeasy to transport. It isconstructed in modules, which makes it easy tohang up on the wall. Both the saw and theaccompanying frequencytransformer are simpleto handle,” says LarsGustafsson. The WS 440 HF is based on the same system asHusqvarna’s hydraulic wall saws and features quick fasteningand radial attachment. The saw will be launched on theEuropean market during the first quarter of 2008.www.husqvarnacp.comcan be found in hall 10.2 and booth number D/E030-031.www.diewe.de62 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

Hilti postsdouble-digit growthThe company boosted sales on the year from CHF4.1 billion, in the previous year, to CHF 4.7 billion. This corresponds to growth of 13 % (2006: 13%). In terms of local currencies worldwide salesrose 11 percent last year (2006: 12 percent). Thecompany took advantage of the favorable economicframework in 2007 to post double-digit growthfor the fourth year in succession. This was accomplishedthanks to the successful introduction ofnew products, the further development of servicesand the continued expansion of sales capacities. Asignificant increase in both the operating result andnet income can also be expected for 2007.Europe, with a share of approximately 65percent of total sales, remains the Hilti Group’sstrongest sales region. In light of the difficultiesfacing the construction economy in North Americathe single-digit growth level in this region can beviewed as very positive. Particularly noteworthy isthe fact that the Latin America, Asia and Near/Middle East/Africa regions contributed overproportionallyto overall growth. Hilti expects positivebusiness development to continue in 2008,even if the economic and currency-related risksare increasing. The detailed annual results will bepresented at the annual results media conferenceon March 7, 2008.Acquisition in IndiaAt the beginning of 2008 Hilti acquired a majorityinterest from an India-based partner in the diamondtool sector. This acquisition not only provides Hiltiwith access to valuable product knowledge andrelevant process technology, but also an efficient,high-quality production facility in India that possessesadditional expansion potential.www.hilti.comNew AEM Vice Presidentof ExhibitionsMegan Tanel of the North American-based Associationof Equipment Manufacturers has beenpromoted to AEM Vice President of Exhibitionsin recognition of her increasing trade show responsibilitiesand leadership. World’s biggest hydraulic breaker involved inthe development of Oslo’s urban traffic systemAn Atlas Copco HB 10000 ProCare hydraulicbreaker is presently involved in the developmentof the railway line from Sandvika via Oslo Cityto the Gardemoen airport. The double-tracktrunk line could no longer handle the increasingtraffic volume to and fromthe new airport. The expansionto four tracks required some71,000 m 3 of rock to be removedover a distance of 900meters. Due to the extremelyhigh costs involved in environmentaland safety aspects andbecause of nearby residentialbuildings, blasting was out ofthe question.Hegna Maskin from Notoddenfirst used an Atlas Copco HB7000, a 7 t class hydraulic breaker. The breaker is working from7 a.m. til 6 p.m. and is removingsome 1,300 m 3 of rock each week. A toughand distantly jointed rock turns this into a verychallenging job. The entire project is scheduledto take 11 months and the contractors werelooking for ways to increase the rock breakingcapacity. An HB 10000 ProCare, the world’sbiggest hydraulic breaker, has now been calledto the scene. With some 2,000 m 3 per weekthis hydraulic breaker accomplishes approx. 50% more than his “little brother“.“The HB 10000 ProCare clearly performsbetter than the HB 7000, which in itself is alreadya Hercules“, the proprietor of the contracting firmand excavator operator Jon Erik Hegna explains.“With this breaker we are sure to be able to meetthe tight schedule.““Another valuable asset is the Atlas CopcoProCare servicing contract“, Hegna adds.“We now have a clear idea of theoperating cost of our equipmentand profit from the know-howof the Atlas Copco people whoare planning and carrying out theservice and maintenance.“ ForTom Erik Larsen, Business LineManager of Atlas Copco Norway, too, the contract offers a lot ofadvantages: “We are workingproactively and the service contractgives us the opportunity toplan the hydraulic breaker servicein the most favourable manner.Because in the end it is in ourown interest to secure maximumproductivity to our customers.“Oslo’s urban traffic system will be the subjectof a marked expansion in the years to come. Itis not only for environmental reasons that themunicipal authorities want commuters to take thetrain – the capacity of the few highways leadingto and from Oslo has already been exhausted along time ago. More than 30 km of stop-andgoduring rush hours is long since regarded ascommon. Quadrupling the railway line will allowsmaller intervals between trains and will distinctlyease the strain on road traffic.www.atlascopco.comNew Telsmith quarry-trax track mounted jawcrusher at ConexpoTelsmith, Inc., an Astec company, willintroduce its new track-mounted primaryjaw crushing plant - the Quarry-Trax ModelTJ3258 - at ConExpo/Con-Agg. Extec C-12+ hits the tracksfor Gregory DemolitionA London based contractorhas underlinedits faith in Extectrack-mounted crusherswith the purchaseof a new C-12+ unitto tackle the arisingsfrom a demandingdemolition project thatproduced 10,000 t ofconstruction and demolitionwaste in justthree days.Gregory Demolition is using the 49 t Extec unit, the fourth in thecompany’s fleet, to process waste materials from Network Rail’sEast London Line project, adjacent to Brick LaneGregory Demolition, one of the UK’s foremost demolitioncontractors, has again puts its faith in Extec crushers with thepurchase of a new C-12+ track-mounted mobile unit. The company,a recognised expert in highly complex bridge dismantlingapplications, has put the 49 t unit to work at its Barking recyclingdepot where it is processing arisings from the demolition of threedouble tunnels near London’s Brick Lane.Jurassic ParkThe contract on the Liverpool Street line, known as the G19project, required the controlled dismantling of a 3,000 m 2 bridgestructure. Work commenced on Christmas Eve and continuedover the Christmas period. To ensure optimum operator safetyand to ensure that the company met the stringent contract deadlines,Gregory utilised a large number of standard and high reachexcavators equipped with a range of front-end attachments. “Togive you an idea of scale, we deployed 450, six m crane mats tohelp protect the rail infrastructure,” says managing director DeanGregory. “At one point, there were that many excavators workingside by side that Network Rail nicknamed the site ‘Jurassic Park’because it looked like a dinosaur feeding frenzy. Mind you, when overrun penalties run at £88,000/h, it does tend to focusthe mind. I am pleased to say we finished our contract early, andcame in 38% ahead of the scheduled time.”Rapid CrushingDuring an intensive, four-day period, the Gregory Demolitionteam processed and removed around 12,000 t of mixed constructionand demolition waste to its recycling facility in Barking, where it was destined to be processed by the company’snew Extec C-12+ track-mounted mobile crusher.Dean Gregory reports thatmaterial is crushed to order and that productivity is not amajor issue in this application. That said, Gregory says that hehas been impressed by sheer speed of the C-12+. “It is muchfaster than our previous machines. It processed around 9,000 tof mixed construction and demolition waste in just two weeks,”he says. “In fact, our loading excavators have trouble keepingpace with it.”The unit is fitted with a grizzly feeder that separates fines, and rebar is pre-segregated prior to crushing, even though theC-12+ can handle steel with ease. An overband magnet separatesthe rebar for onward processing.Pleasing PurchaseDean Gregory is clearly impressed with his latest Extec purchase.“Extec crushers are reliable and are ideal fordemolition work. They’re rugged, well built and best of all, they arenot over complicated. This makesthem easy to work with andeasy to train our staff to operatethem,” Gregory concludes.“Obviously we looked at othercrushers but we were particularly impressedwith the C-12+. It’s done everythingthat we expected of it and more. We are extremelypleased with the purchase.”www.extec.eu68 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h

A free copy of this study is now availablefrom the National Demolition Association. The study, developed by Principal Investigator Stephen D.Cosper of the Construction Engineering ResearchLaboratory, deals with the demolition of family housingat Fort Ord, USA, which is typical of the older Armybuilding stock, much of which is being demolished. The report is entitled “LBP Concerns in producingRecycled Concrete Aggregate from former Fort OrdFamily Housing.”The so-called Cosper Report attempts tocorrelate the concentration of lead on the paintedbuildings to the concentration of lead in aggregateproduced from those buildings’ demolition. Thefinal concentration is the key metric in determiningsuitable end use. In the case of Fort Ord housing, the final lead concentration was found to be quitelow. The work site was assessed in several ways, including several weeks of worker observation, including monitoring of demolition contractor dustcontrol procedures, worker practices, and analyticalevaluation of samples collected during actual demolitionand concrete recycling. The Cosper Reportwas funded by the Construction Materials RecyclingAssociation and the National Demolition Association. The Construction Engineering Research Laboratoryis an element of the U.S. Army Research andDevelopment Centre, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. To obtain a free copy of the report, contact NationalDemolition Association through its website www.demolitionassociation.com.70 PDi • Is s u e 1 - 2008 • Fe b r u a ry - Ma r c h
