A Message From the President:
Let the games begin! On Friday, an estimated
4 billion people around the world watched the
opening ceremony of the London Olympics.
It’s remarkable to think that more than 10,000 of the
world’s finest athletes representing 204 countries
are joining together to compete at the highest level.
Thanks to the wonders of technology we can watch
events as they stream live on the internet and follow
our hometown athletes on Twitter. I’ve got a front row
seat in London any time, day or night, and I didn’t even
have to get on a plane.
The world is deeply connected and today’s students are
connected, global citizens. Our mission, as Catholic,
Lasallian educators, calls for us to be innovative in
ensuring that our students are prepared to be take their
place as ethical leaders in this new world. Today, that
means an international education that equips them with
the cultural knowledge, social skills and integrity to
meet the challenges of a changing world.
To that end, we have made the strategic decision
to expand our school community and launch an
International Student Program. This year, we are
welcoming seven students from China, one student
from Colombia, and three students from Italy. Our
plan is to grow the program slowly and circumspectly
to ensure that all of the students are well served and
cared for during the transition and throughout the years
they are with us.
What we had not anticipated was the high demand
for admission to Christian Brothers from students and
parents in China. What we have learned is that higher
education options in China are limited and discerning
Chinese families want American colleges. These
families understand that an outstanding college prep
school is a critical part of the formula. Each of the
seven young men and women to whom admission was
• Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve •
offered has accepted our invitation. According
to our partners at the Cambridge Institute of
Education, this is unprecedented. We can all be
proud that CB’s programs are “world class.”
We are blessed to live in a region that is richly
multicultural and CB is microcosm of that
diversity. Adding an international component will
help prepare all of our students to thrive in college
and as global citizens. In addition to welcoming 11
international students, we are further blessed this
year to welcome 26 exceptional transfer students
from schools throughout the Sacramento region.
Please join me in welcoming these young men and
women as they begin their journey as Falcons.
We are grateful to the CB families who have opened
their homes to our international students and we
look forward to a positive and enriching cultural
experience for all members of the CB community.
As we begin our 137th year of Catholic, Lasallian
education in Sacramento, thank you for partnering
with us in your daughter’s/son’s education. We
look forward to seeing you on August 16 TH .
God bless,
Lasallian Student Life Program
NEW!!! Campus Ministry has been restructured into the
Lasallian Student Life Program!
The Lasallian Student Life Program at
Christian Brothers High School unifies
and promotes the faith, service and
community aspects of our school,
providing a dynamic and diverse
opportunity for student participation in
faith-building activities. This program
meets CB’s need for vital and viable
student life experiences through which
students grow their faith, develop
leadership skills, and are empowered to
take pride and ownership of their school.
This model manifests the Lasallian core
principles, helping students to know,
articulate and live the mission of our
school.
The Lasallian Student Life Office is
facilitated by five faculty members:
Directors of Faith Formation (Retreats);
Director of Christian Service; and Directors
of Community/Worship (Liturgies). Each
of these team members works
collaboratively with students to organize
and participate in multiple student
events and experiences throughout the
year. The Lasallian Student Life Program is
directed from the Student Life Center, an
office and workspace shared with Student
Activities which we hope becomes the
heart of our school. Students interested in
working in the areas of Faith, Service, and
Community are welcome each year to
participate through a variety of means.
These students are provided with the
training and the tools to be leaders of
faith at CBHS.
A Parent’s Prayer
Loving God,
I thank You for the gift of my
children and for the privilege and
responsibility of being a parent,
for this is my way of holiness.
May I regard each of my children
as a sacred pledge of Your love
and a beautiful sign of Your
confidence in me.
Help me to pass on to my children
our greatest treasures,
faith in Your truths,
hope in Your goodness,
love in Your Name for all.
I entrust my children to
Your loving care.
Banish from our home any
bitterness or lack of forgiveness.
Let us have time, deep
concern, and a sense of sacrifice
for one another.
Help us to live in the way
of Jesus, sharing the truth and love
of the Gospel message.
Give us Your Holy Spirit
to unite, bless, and inspire
our family.
Amen.
Words of
St. John Baptist
If you show the firmness of
a father in withdrawing the
children from evil,
you should also show the
tenderness of a mother
in gathering them together,
and in doing them all the
good in your power.
Training Day for Eucharistic Ministers, Wednesday, August 15
The school community can be grateful for the nearly 50 seniors who have stepped
will be a brief training session for these students on August 15, Senior Processing Day.
Following measurements and other Senior class business, future Eucharistic ministers
will report to Room 105 for a brief training session.
Mass of the Holy Spirit, Wednesday, August 22
Our school year traditionally begins with the Mass of the Holy Spirit when we as a
community seek the wisdom and guidance of the Spirit in all we do for the upcoming
year. Mass will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the gym. We are pleased and fortunate to welcome
Fr. Tom Bonacci from Christ the King Retreat Center as our presider.
RETREATS
The Senior Retreat Leadership Team will participate in their training session/
retreat August 24-26 at Christ the King Retreat Center. These seniors will be busy this
school year leading the Frosh, Sophomore, and Junior retreats.
The Senior Kairos Retreats will take place September 25-28 and November
13-16, 2012, and January 22-25, 2013. This is a four-day, student-led retreat grounded in
the Christian belief that God is very much a part of our real world, especially through the
continuing presence of Jesus Christ as he shows himself to us through our family and
friends. Kairos is an experience of Christian community, with a series of talks given by
both student peers and adults. Prayer and self-discovery are also essential parts of this
program, as well as the retreatants’ involvement in discussions and other exercises. A
letter will go home to all senior parents with details about this retreat.
Juniors are also invited to make their Kairos retreat early, the week
after school is out, when they are “brand-new” seniors. The Junior Kairos will be held
May 28-31, 2013.
Junior retreats are overnight retreats held at Christ the King Retreat Center in
Citrus Heights; two are held in the fall semester, and two occur in the spring semester. A
letter with details will go home to all junior parents. The focus of this retreat is “Christ’s
Message for Me – My Journey.” Please see the school calendar on the CB website for the
dates of Junior retreats.
Sophomore retreats, held at the Newman Center (across from CSUS), also take
place during fall and spring semesters. Focusing on “Who Is Christ in My Life? What Are
My Choices and Values?” these one-day retreats will be further explained in a letter that
will go home to sophomore parents. Please see the school calendar on the CB website
for the dates of these retreats.
Sophomore, Junior, and Senior retreats are optional. Students may sign up for these
retreats in the Lasallian Student Life Office.
The Frosh retreat will occur during the first semester on Wednesday, October
17 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on the CB campus for all freshman students. This is a
mandatory retreat; all frosh are required to attend. With the theme “Who Am I?” the
frosh will explore their self-identity, their new CBHS identity, and their new membership
in the worldwide Lasallian family. Details of this retreat will be in a letter that will be sent
home to freshman parents.

Media, Visual & Performing Arts
What a summer for the arts at Christian Brothers!
After a highly successful 2011-12 school year filled with accolades and awards, our arts program continued to shine throughout
the summer.
In June twenty-three CB choral students traveled to New York City and performed under the baton of world renowned choral
educator, composer and conductor Rene Clausen. The concert took place in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, one of the world’s
premiere choral recital halls. The acoustics provided the perfect match for the challenging literature selected by Dr. Clausen, and
the audience of nearly 1000 people was moved to their feet at the end of the performance.
Once again elementary and junior high students were able to experience the arts during our two week summer arts camp,
featuring a wheel of choral, instrumental and visual arts. Students traveled through time in the visual arts with art instructor
Donna Adam, creating a portfolio of artwork representative of the major time periods in art history. They then learned,
recorded, and performed an entire concert of choral and instrumental music with choral director Ron Slabbinck and band
director Travis Maslen.
Next in July, our summer media arts camp debuted, offering junior high students the opportunity to refine their skills as they
learned the art of video production in our state of the arts television studio where our award winning student run television
network operates. This highly successful camp is destined to be a regular in our summer offerings, thanks to the energy of our
media arts director, Brendan Hogan.
And now we gear up for another amazing year of media, visual, performing arts. As you will find out if you don’t already know,
there is always something happening in the arts at CB, and there is always a place in the arts for any CB student. If your child
would like to be involved in any extra curricular arts-related activities, if you have any questions about the arts at CB, or your
child did not register for a media, visual or performing arts class next year and would like to, please contact Director of Media,
Visual, Performing Arts, Ron Slabbinck at rslabbinck@cbhs-sacramento.org.
