Series MC-1 and MC-2Series MC PDMs Offer Cost Effective Internal RedundancyAnd Make-Before-Break TransfersUnited Power’s MC-1 and MC-2 systems provide costeffectivesolutions to those Mission Critical applicationswhere the user wants to optimize power availabilityand system maintainability. A permissive signal fromthe upstream power sources verifies synchronizationand allows the user to initiate a “make-before-break”transfer from one side of the system to the other. Thistransfer may be made by manual operation of the maininput circuit breakers or through push-button controlswhen our automatic control configuration has beenselected. With either configuration, our advanced controllogic prevents the possibility of operator error. Themake-before-break transfer allows the user to performsystem maintenance without downtime to the criticalload. Redundant PDM input circuit breakers andtransformers dramatically reduce recovery time inthe event of an equipment failure (MC-2).MC-1 — Flexible System BypassUnited Power MC-1 systems are the first step in maximizingthe benefits of bringing redundancy into thePDM. The MC-1 is the least expensive member of ourMission Critical PDM product line and provides theuser with a second main input circuit breaker protectivedevice. This design is often used as an economicalmaintenance bypass to accommodate theoutput of one UPS and its synchronized bypasssource. This integrates the system bypass functioninto the PDM rather than into expensive externalbypass switchgear.MC-1 main input breakers are electrically interlocked forsafe manual operation. They may also be automaticallyoperated for those sites where push-button controlsare desired. All MC-1 systems feature the use of UnitedPower’s advanced control logic to ensure properoperation of the two main input circuit breakers.SERIES MC-1 PDMBYPASS FEEDCB2UPS BYPASSPERMISSIVESIGNAL FROM UPSCONTROLLOGICMC-1 PDMUPS INPUTUPSSYSTEMCB1MC PDMs improve system availabilityand maintainabilityThe above one-line diagram illustrates an MC-1 PDM used for power distribution and UPSsystem bypass functions.Data processing facilities know that loss ofpower means lost data that can result in the lossof millions of dollars per minute. United Powerfully understands the complex requirements ofcritical power loads. We designed our Series MCPDMs to be the intelligent solution for providingthe most reliable and maintainable power distributionsystem offered today.

MC-2 — Dual Transformers For MaximumProtection And MaintainabilityUnited Power MC-2 systems extend the redundancyin your power distribution unit beyond the maininput breakers by including a second impedancematchedtransformer for maximum maintainabilityand protection against potential single points of failure. The MC-2 load may be transferred from one side ofthe unit to the other in a “make-before-break” manner. This allows system maintenance without downtime,an essential feature of a mission critical site. To completethe design, all MC-2 systems include outputbreakers in our two-device, classic three-device “tie”,or our unique four-device “criss-cross” configuration. The MC-2 output breakers are available with eithermanual or automatic (push-button) operation basedon your personal preference. Simply provide UnitedPower a permissive signal that confirms that the twoinputs of the PDM are fed from synchronized sourcesand make-before-break operation is allowed. The controlswithin the MC-2 do the rest to ensure safe andreliable operation of this advanced distribution system.INPUTSOURCE BPERMISSIVESIGNAL(BY OTHERS)INPUTSOURCE ACB2CB1CONTROLLOGICOur MC-2 three breaker “tie” configuration allows you to place100% of the load onto either side of the PDM for system maintenancewithout downtime. Series MC-3 and MC-4Series MC PDMs Offer Static Transfer Switch TechnologyFor Transparent Switching Between SourcesThe MC-3 and MC-4 feature advanced static transferswitch (STS) technology complete with on-board diagnosticsthat monitor each of the two input sources forany abnormal characteristics. In the event of a powerproblem, the STS provides the ability to transfer fromthe preferred power source to the alternate powersource within four milliseconds (less than one-quartercycle). By integrating the ultra-fast STS into the powerdistribution unit, we increase the reliability and flexibilityof your entire critical power system. Other featuressuch as redundant circuit breakers and isolation transformershave made these systems the choice of missioncritical environments across the country.INPUTSOURCE BTRANSFERCONTROLLOGICMCS2MCS1SS2SS1MCS4MCS5PDMCONTROLLOGICCB1MC-3 — Input-Positioned STSINPUTSOURCE AMCS3Model MC-3 is the first “platform”within the Mission Criticalproduct line to feature astatic transfer switch (STS).The 100% rated STS is positionedon the input of thesystem’s isolation transformer. In popular 480 Vac input,120/208 Vac output applications,we position the STSat a higher operating voltageto reduce the size and costassociated with the switch. Our “line up and match” cabinetryprovides a clean look forthe data center, clean room orother high-tech environment.Focus Level III microprocessormonitoring is standard on allMC-3 units and a mimic panelis provided to show the criticalpower path of the system.United Power MC-3 systems feature an input-positioned STS,providing 4mS switching between two different sources.A static transfer switch integrated into the PDM increases system reliability and flexibility.MC-4 PDMProcess control environments require missioncritical power distribution to ensure consistentperformance and accurate control in productionand manufacturing. From process flow controlsto robotics, United Power MC PDMs provide bothreliable and maintainable power distribution technologyfor today’s sophisticated manufacturingprocesses.

MC-4 — Output-Positioned STS On DualTransformersUnited Power’s MC-4 is the ultimate power distributionsystem and is currently supporting some of thenation’s most critical data processing facilities. In theMC-4, we have combined the attributes of the STSwith dual high isolation transformers to optimize theredundant characteristics of the system. As a result, the MC-4 provides increased reliability, maintainability, and availability of conditioned power for yourcritical load. Perhaps this is why so many of our customershave chosen this PDM configuration. The MC-4 boasts flexibility not found in other distributionsystems. For clients with a high concentrationof “dual corded” loads, we can feed “dual corded”loads directly from the output of the isolation transformersand feed “single corded” loads from the STSoutput. This will typically reduce the necessaryampere rating of the STS while optimizing reliabilityand cost.INPUTSOURCE BINPUTSOURCE ACB2PDM BCONTROLLOGICPDM ACONTROLLOGICCB1TRANSFERCONTROLLOGICMCS2MCS1SS2SS1MCS4MCS5MCS3MC-3 and MC-4 FeaturesFeatureMC-3 MC-4System kVA Range75-300kVA S SSystem VoltagesInput: 480V 3 phase, Output: 208/120V 3 phase S SInput: 208V 3 phase, Output: 208/120V 3 phase O OOther international voltage & frequency combinations O OStatic Transfer Switch (STS)STS on transformer primary S N/ASTS on transformer secondary N/A SFive switch STS bypass circuit S SSix switch STS bypass circuit O OTransformer Input BreakersSingle circuit breaker (for single transformer systems) S N/ATwo circuit breakers (for dual transformer systems) O SLightning Arrestor/Surge SuppressorHigh energy surge protection on the transformer primary O OIsolation TransformersK-13 rated S SK-20 rated O ODual impedance matched transformers O SHarmonic mitigating transformers O N/ATransient Voltage Surge SuppressionOne stage (L-N) @ 80,000 Amps total O OTwo stage (L-N & N-G) @ 160,000 Amps total O OThree stage (L-N, N-G & L-G) @ 240,000 Amps total O OFocus Microprocessor Controlled MonitoringTrue RMS voltage, current, kVA, demand, alarming, etc. S SThree phase sag/surge transient, THD monitor O ODistribution PanelboardsTwo through eight 42-pole panelboards available S S225 amp secondary main breaker feeding each panelboard S SPanelboards for “Dual Corded” loads N/A OSubfeed Distribution BreakersUp to four 225A 3-pole breakers in lieu of a panelboard O OS = Standard O = Optional N/A = Not AvailableTwo main breakers, two impedance-matched transformers, anda five-device STS are combined to create the ultimate MissionCritical PDM.The chart above illustrates standard and optional features of theMC-3 and MC-4 systems to help you determine which MissionCritical configuration most closely meets your requirements.Semi-conductor fabrication relies on robotic systemsto ensure efficiency and reliability in production.Microprocessor-controlled machine toolsprovide absolute repeatability and require missioncritical power distribution to ensure quality products.United Power’s Series MC PDMs can be custom-engineeredto meet the power distributionrequirements of any manufacturing need.
