1. System requirements Computer on which one <strong>of</strong> the following operating systems runs reliably <strong>and</strong> quickly:Micros<strong>of</strong>t Windows 98 / ME / 2000 / XP, Apple Macintosh OS X, Linux in a suitable configuration (minimalhardware requirements acc. to those <strong>of</strong> the operating system used, e.g. for Windows, at least Pentium IIwith 200 MHz <strong>and</strong> 64 MB RAM; we recommend at least Pentium III from 500 MHz <strong>and</strong> 128 MB RAM on) with Macintosh: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from Sun from version 1.4.2 on(for Linux <strong>and</strong> Windows, a suitable version is included on the CD) Monitor or beamer with a screen resolution from 800 x 600 pixels upward Graphics support <strong>of</strong> the hardware <strong>and</strong> colour setting High Color (16 bits = 65536 colours) or higher At least 100 MB free fixed disk storage(up to 500 MB, acc. to the language version, experiment content etc.) CD ROM drive 4x (only required for the installation) Recommended: A s<strong>of</strong>tware for the display <strong>of</strong> PDF files,e.g. “Adobe Reader” (see also http://www.adobe.com/)(The fully functional version <strong>of</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong> was developed in the programming language Java from Sun. Thisallows, in principle, the use <strong>of</strong> the s<strong>of</strong>tware on all operating systems for which a Java Runtime Environment(JRE) from Sun is available. The JRE used should be the “Java 2 Platform, St<strong>and</strong>ard Edition” (J2SE),version 1.4.2 or higher. For Windows <strong>and</strong> Linux, a suitable version is st<strong>and</strong>ardly supplied.2. <strong>Installation</strong>The installation <strong>of</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong> is dependent on the operating system used (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux).Please follow the <strong>instructions</strong> in the appropriate section.Should you experience difficulty in carrying out installation, please read further in section FAQ<strong>of</strong> the manual “<strong>interTESS</strong>_Manual_EN”.Extensive information such as directions for installation, help files <strong>and</strong> brochures on <strong>PHYWE</strong> products are tobe found in the "<strong>interTESS</strong>_Info" directory. Please note that to view PDF files an appropriate programmemust be installed. Should the PDF files not be displayed, you can download "Adobe Reader" free <strong>of</strong> chargevia the Internet address http://www.adobe.com/ for installation in your computer.2.1. <strong>Installation</strong> under Micros<strong>of</strong>t WindowsTo install in a Windows system, insert the "<strong>interTESS</strong>" CD in the CD-drive <strong>of</strong> your computer.The installation programme is started <strong>and</strong> leads you through the installation process.Should installation not start <strong>of</strong> its own accord, proceed as follows: Click on "<strong>Start</strong>" <strong>and</strong> select "Run...". Enterin the "Run dialog box":D:\<strong>interTESS</strong>_Windows\setup.exeSubsequently confirm with "OK". (Should your CD-drive not be described by the letter “D:", then replace the"D:" with the appropriate letter for your CD-drive.)You can alternatively select the CD-drive via "Workplace" <strong>and</strong> change to the "<strong>interTESS</strong>_Windows"directory, where you can double click to start the file "setup" or "setup.exe".Follow the installation programme <strong>instructions</strong>.The choice <strong>of</strong> language concerns only the installation programme, <strong>and</strong> not the "<strong>interTESS</strong>" s<strong>of</strong>tware.You can use the st<strong>and</strong>ard settings when installing.© 2005 <strong>PHYWE</strong> Systeme GmbH & Co. Please note that you have the necessary rights to write in the selected installation directory. Ifapplicable, you must be registered as administrator. An installation that already exists will beoverwritten, following an appropriate query. WARNING! ALL files in the installation directory will beoverwritten! Should you want to retain the old version, then you must select a different directory name forthe installation.During installation, the necessary data will be copied onto your fixed disk <strong>and</strong> an icon for calling theprogramme filed on the desktop. In addition, a "<strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong>" entry is generated under<strong>Start</strong>" » "Programs". It is also possible to start the <strong>interTESS</strong> programme here, as well as to call theprogramme documentation or de-install the <strong>interTESS</strong> programme.Following successful installation, the "<strong>interTESS</strong>" CD can be removed from the CD-drive. The data will beloaded from the fixed disk when the programme is put to use.The installation <strong>of</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong> has herewith been completed.2.2. <strong>Installation</strong> under Apple Macintosh with Mac OS XTo install in an Apple Macintosh system, insert the "<strong>interTESS</strong>" CD in the CD-drive <strong>of</strong> your computer.2.2.1. Copy dataThe data for the installation is to be found on the "<strong>interTESS</strong>" CD in the "<strong>interTESS</strong>_MacOSX" directory.Copy the "<strong>interTESS</strong>_MacOSX" directory in any directory in your computer, e.g. /Volumes/Phywe.2.2.2. Adapt rightsAdapt the rights for this directory so that the user has sufficient rights to write or run in the"<strong>interTESS</strong>_MacOSX" directory. Testing the Java versionFrom Mac OS X on, a JAVA Runtime Environment (JRE) from Sun is st<strong>and</strong>ardly supplied. It is only importanthere to check that it is a current version. You can easily test this. <strong>Start</strong> "Terminal" <strong>and</strong> enterjava –versionThe version number shown should be at least 1.4.2. If this is not the case, then you must install a currentversion.2.2.4. <strong>Installation</strong> <strong>of</strong> JavaWhen your Java version is not sufficient, you can download <strong>and</strong> install a current JRE version underhttp://www.apple.com/de/macosx/features/java/. The current JRE is "Java 2 Platform, St<strong>and</strong>ard Edition(J2SE), version 1.4.2 for Mac OS X. Please follow the appropriate <strong>instructions</strong>. Copy dataThe data for the installation is to be found on the "<strong>interTESS</strong>" CD in the "<strong>interTESS</strong>_Linux" directory.Copy the "<strong>interTESS</strong>_Linux" directory in any directory in your computer, e.g. /usr/local/Phywe.2.3.2. Suit rightsSuit the rights for this directory for the user to have sufficient rights to write or run in the"<strong>interTESS</strong>_Linux" directory. It isimportant here to check that it is a current version. You can easily test this. <strong>Start</strong> "Terminal" <strong>and</strong> enterjava –versionThe version number shown should be at least 1.4.2. If this is not the case, then you must install a currentversion.2.3.4. <strong>Installation</strong> <strong>of</strong> Java<strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong> is st<strong>and</strong>ardly supplied with a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from Sun. To avoidpossible problems with regard to versions, we recommend that this version be used to start the programme.The current JRE is "Java 2 Platform, St<strong>and</strong>ard Edition (J2SE), version 5.0(1.5.0) for Linux. You can findfurther information on Java under http://java.sun.com/.The installation directory for the JRE to be used must be given as environmental variable JAVA_HOME. Withthis, the following entry in the file follows/etc/pr<strong>of</strong>ileexport JAVA_HOME=[Java-<strong>Installation</strong>Directory]These changes can only be made from root. A renewed logon is then necessary.When a root logon is not possible, then this comm<strong>and</strong> is carried out at the comm<strong>and</strong> line. The variable isthen only valid for the actual session, however.If the JRE supplied is used, then JAVA_HOME is to be put on the directory[<strong>Installation</strong>Directory]/<strong>interTESS</strong>_Linux/jre_linuxThe java file in the [JAVA_HOME]/bin directory must be executable by all users, who are to use the<strong>interTESS</strong> programme. You can suit the rights e.g. with the KDE Desktop or in the "Console" (Shell), e.g.:chmod u+x [<strong>Installation</strong>Directory]/<strong>interTESS</strong>_Linux/jre_linux/bin/javaYou should subsequently test the successful installation as described under "Testing the Java version".The installation <strong>of</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong> has now been successfully completed.3. De-installation3.1. De-installation under WindowsDe-installation <strong>of</strong> the “<strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong>” programme is effected via the menu. Therefore, click on“Uninstall <strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong>” via “<strong>Start</strong>” » “Programs” » “<strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong>”. Follow the directions <strong>of</strong> thede-installation programme.3.2. De-installation under Mac OS XFor de-installation the “<strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong>” programme, just delete the directory <strong>interTESS</strong>_MacOSX,which you have copied on your hard drive while installing.3.3. De-installation under LinuxFor de-installation the “<strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong>” programme, just delete the directory <strong>interTESS</strong>_Linux, whichyou have copied on your hard drive while installing.If you have set the environment variable JAVA_HOME into the Java version <strong>of</strong> the directory[<strong>Installation</strong>Directory]/<strong>interTESS</strong>_Linux/jre_linux in a permanent status, please note thatthis directory will no longer be available after deleting. Modify the environment variable JAVA_HOMEaccording to an effective Java installation (compare with “<strong>Installation</strong> <strong>of</strong> Java” in Linux).4. <strong>Start</strong>ing <strong>interTESS</strong>Enclosed is a teacher password generated by <strong>PHYWE</strong>. Please treat this password confidentially <strong>and</strong>only pass it on to trustworthy persons authorized to teach. We recommend that you change thepassword given to one that is easier for you to remember (see “Change password…”).Remember – everyone who knows the password has access to all the solutions.4.1. Programme start under WindowsThe "<strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong>" programme can be started either via the corresponding icon on the desktop or viathe menu. For the latter, under "<strong>Start</strong>" » "Programs" » "<strong>PHYWE</strong> <strong>interTESS</strong>", click on the "<strong>interTESS</strong>" entry.The start <strong>of</strong> the s<strong>of</strong>tware takes place in several steps. An information window is first displayed. Java (theJRE) is loaded in the background. This process can take a good 20 seconds on 500 MHz computers.Following this, the <strong>interTESS</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware is loaded. This is shown by a further information window. The loading<strong>of</strong> this programme also takes a few seconds. The s<strong>of</strong>tware is ready to use when the main display is shown.© 2005 <strong>PHYWE</strong> Systeme GmbH & Co. 4.2. Programme start under Mac OS XTo start <strong>interTESS</strong> under Mac OS X the "terminal" must be opened.In the "terminal" you change the directory with the corresponding installation, e.g.cd [<strong>Installation</strong>Directory]/<strong>interTESS</strong>_MacOSXOn entering./run_osx.shin the "terminal" <strong>interTESS</strong> is started.Should it not be possible to start run_macosx.sh, then you must check if the rights <strong>of</strong> use, as describedunder "Suit rights" in the "<strong>Installation</strong>" section, have been correctly placed.4.3. Programme start under LinuxTo start <strong>interTESS</strong> under Linux the "console" (shell) must be opened.In the "console" you change the directory with the corresponding installation, e.g.cd [<strong>Installation</strong>Directory]/<strong>interTESS</strong>_LinuxIf no permanent commitment <strong>of</strong> the environmental variable <strong>of</strong> the Java installation has occurred (see<strong>Installation</strong> <strong>of</strong> Java under Linux), then this must be temporarily committed:export JAVA_HOME=[Java-<strong>Installation</strong>Directory]<strong>and</strong> tested, if the environmental variable has been correctly committed:echo $JAVA_HOMEOn entering./run_linux.shin the "console", <strong>interTESS</strong> will be started.Should it not be possible to start run_linux.sh, then you must check if the rights <strong>of</strong> use, as describedunder "Suit rights" in the "<strong>Installation</strong>" section, have been correctly placed.When the fault message "java: comm<strong>and</strong> not found" should be given, please check: Is Java correctlyinstalled?
