Hanover’s stallions in the lead
The headline of the article on the breed value estimation in DER HANNOVERANER 1/2010
read “Twice number one in the breed value estimation”. We can repeat this headline as
– according to the new breed value estimation of the German Equestrain Federation –
Hanoverian stallions head the dressage as well as the jumper list.

– The top ten percent stallions
after the integrated breed
value estimation.
The extensive charts on the following pages include
many numbers and dates. Included are
Germany’s top ten percent of producers for dressage
and jumping that are active in Hanover. The
results of the association’s own breed value estimation
are listed as well as the integrated breed value
estimation of the German Equestrian Federation
(FN).
The database for the breed value estimation changes
from year to year. A multitude of information is
added every year. These are for instance the results
from mare inspections, mare performance tests and
auction pre-selections in the Hanoverian breed value
estimation and in the integrated breed value
estimation the results from mare and stallion performance
tests as well as a flood of horse show results
can be found. Even with the constant changes
in the database the breed values have remained
pretty stabile over the years and the variations have
stayed within justifiable limits. With respect to these
annual variations differences of only a few points in
the breed values between individual stallions must
not be overrated. It is important to properly classify
the height of the breed value. All stallions with a
breed value in dressage of 151 and in jumping of
153 belong to the top one percent. In other words
they are the absolute best group. It is however still
very interesting to take a closer look at the top
groups of the individual disciplines. Stakkato and
his descendants clearly dominate the top jumper
list. Stakkato has headed the jumper list of the
breed value estimation for many years. His son
Stakkato Gold took second place this year. His sons
Salito and Satisfaction are in the top ten, Stolzenberg
is in the top one percent. Debutants in this
year’s breed value estimation include Stakkato’s
son Stalypso. He stands at stud on the breeding
farm Sprehe. We can find numerous descendants in
suitability classes, mare performance tests and auction
pre-selections out of his first vintage under
saddle which guarantees a fairly secure breed value

estimation for such a young sire. He just missed the
limit of the top one percent with a jumper breed
value of 150. He has the best FN-breed value in
dressage of all of Stakkato’s sons which allows for
a certain versatile heredity. Overall the breed value
estimation confirms that Stakkato introduced a
new era in the breeding of jumper horses in Hanover.
Now or Never and his sons were also valued highly.
2003 was the first year that Now or Never was
used at the State Stud Celle to spread the valuable
blood of the Hanoverian Voltaire in Hanover who
had already founded a stallion line in the Netherlands.
As the licensing champion in the Netherlands
he already had an advantage. There several sons
followed all achieving excellent performance results
and laying the foundation for Now or Never’s
high breed value. Up to now the mare performance
tests results have confirmed his high breed value.
Several descendants have already successfully competed
at the S-level in jumping including a son who
was born and raised in the Netherlands, carries the
name of his grandsire Voltaire and who – at the age
of eight – is already internationally successful. Now
or Never’s son Valentino follows into the footsteps
of his sire standing at stud in Celle. The performance
test champion of 2005 successfully competes

to the top ten percent with his first breed
value of 160 points and is valued just as high as his
sire.
Big surprises in top dressage list
The top dressage list holds a big surprise. The front
runners of previous years like Don Schufro, Breitling
W or Sir Donnerhall continue to be in the absolute
top group. The sire with the highest breed value
however is the Hanoverian Real Diamond by Rohdiamant/Weltmeyer,
bred by Hubert Ratermann.
The noble dark bay has a colorful history. Real Diamond
was presented as a two-year old at the stallion
licensing in Verden in 2003 and was not licensed.
He fulfilled the requirements for licensing in
Westphalia after a successful completion of the 30day
test where he started his career as a breeding

Beckmann and Korte now the State Stud Warendorf
is offering his services as a breeding stallion. He has
already proved to be a hit. With limited demand he
has already produced two licensed sons and five
state’s premium mares. Twenty-five descendants
are successful in the show ring. Almost every offspring
that has entered a dressage ring has returned
home with a ribbon.
Newcomer Dancier
Celle’s state stud sire Dancier was able to place in
the top ten with a breed value of 162 at his first
attempt. He created a good starting point with an
outstanding performance test. The performance
test results of fifteen daughters were entered into
the integrated breed value estimation while the
evaluations of twenty-six young horses (including
Dancier.
auction pre-selection scores) were used to determine
the association’s breed value estimation. The
next two years will tell what his fate will be.
Career of an licensing champion
In the beginning Hotline pursued a career similar to
Dancier’s one: first licensing champion in Verden
then performance test champion and heavy use as
breeding stallion at the station Schockemöhle and

the first foal vintages things went quiet. He became
more and more popular again once his first descendants
were under saddle and showed off their
ability. His sons and daughters reveal excellent riding
horse attributes that explain his high breed
value and which places him in the top one percent
in the breed value estimation of the FN.
First-class gene pool available
The results of the breed value estimations show
that a first-class gene pool for dressage as well as
for jumping is available to Hanoverian breeders. The
breed value estimation must be viewed as one of
several valuable sources of information. It cannot
and should not – for instance – replace a personal
impression. Every breeder is recommend to visit
stallion performance tests and horse shows like
Verden’s International Dressage and Jumper Festival
to watch the stallions perform. All available data
is arranged in relation to each other in the breed
value estimation. It allows for well-founded comparable
figures. n

been published. It is an interesting reference
book. In addition to the current breed value estimation
you will find an introduction of all stallions
newly entered into the Stallion Book I in
2010 with a photo and elaborate information

The Oldenburg stallion Shooting Star by Sir Donnerhall/Banditentraum
was the overall champion.
He won the test unchallenged with a total index
of 136,88 points. The dark bay was also the leader
in the dressage index with 143,21 points; he placed
forth in the jumper index with 108,41 points. Fouryear
old Cornet’ Balou by Cornet Obolensky/Continue
became reserve champion with 132,60 index
points. He won the jumper index with 136,94
points.
Fahrenheit best Hanoverian
Fahrenheit by Fidertanz/De Niro (breeder: Andrea
Heitmann, Dinklage) finished the test as the best
youngster with a Hanoverian brand. The breeding
farm Tannenhof had purchased Fahrenheit at the
stallion sales in 2009. He placed third with 126,38
index points. He earned the second best dressage
index of his vintage with 141,26 points through
very good basic gaits and high rideability .
The forth- and fifth-placed youngsters also came
from the Hessian stallion station. Chacco Chacco by
Chacco-Blue/Stakkato (breeder: Klaus Jürgens, Sehnde-Bolzum)
finished in forth position with 138 in-
dex points. The dark bay received very high scores
for his jumping ability and on the cross-country
course. He placed second in the jumper discipline
with 132,96 index points. The Holstein sire Cassitano
by Casado/Briscar finished in fifth place with
102,77 index points.
Dressage specialist Don Nobless
Don Nobless by Dancier/Don Davidoff (breeder: ZG
Hey, Langen) placed sixth with 100,43 index points.
This dressage specialist took third place in his discipline
with 111,33 points. Dantander Hit by Dancier/
Sandro Hit (breeder: Rolf Deecke, Lachendorf) finished
ninth with a total index of 95,16 points. He
received 111,20 points in the dressage index being
in forth place; in the jumper index 80,29 points
meant thirteenth place. Herbert Kruse from Hamburg
owns both stallions.
The result for premium stallion Chambers by Champion
For Pleasure/Athletico (breeder: Manuela
Buhr-Schmidt, Eldingen) had to be projected. The
chestnut owned by the renowned breeding and
training facility Staj Mustang, Czech Republic,
reached a total index of 105,12 points. n

The hunt for World Cup points is in full swing at all the classic indoor shows.
The German Masters in Stuttgart reported brilliant Hanoverian successes in December.
Shutterfly and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum were not to beat on the stadium course,
while Satchmo and Isabell Werth set the standard in dressage.

Baudolino
In the Grand Prix at Oldenburg’s International
Horse Days, Baudolino by Convoi/Dux (breeder:
Karl Oelkers, Suhlendorf) finished fifth
with his rider Susanne Lebek.
Rodrigo (VA)
Rodrigo by Rotspon/Morning Star (breeder:
Helmut Hoppe, Bispingen) is one of Australia’s
most successful dressage competitors. In Melbourne,
he placed fifth in the Grand Prix with
his rider Maree Tomkinson and third in the
freestyle.
Sancette
At the CDI in Melbourne, Sancette by Sandro
Hit/Contenter (breeder: Dietrich Meyer, Bierde)
under Mary Hanna took third position in
the victory gallop of the Grand Prix. In the
freestyle, the nine-year old placed second.
Satchmo (VA)
With acclamation of the audience, Satchmo
by Sao Paulo/Legat (breeder: Albert Kampert,
Halle) and Isabell Werth won the Grand Prix
and the freestyle in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Arena.
It was the sixth victory of the queen
of dressage in Stuttgart/Germany and with
this success record, she wrote history.
Winyamaro and Catherine Haddad placed fourth
in Stuttgart.
Winyamaro
In a sold-out arena at the German Masters, in
Stuttgart Winyamaro by Walt Disney/Trapper
(breeder: Hans-Jürgen Bührig, Schiffdorf) finished
forth in the Grand Prix with U.S. American
rider Catherine Haddad.

Eurocommerce Agadir
For the first time THE HANOVERIAN reports
about Agadir by Nagano/Watzmann (breeder:
Breeding Farm Lewitz, Mühlen) in its sport
section. The dark bay placed second in the
Grand Prix of Budapest/Hungary with her Italian
rider Francesca Arioldi.
Amatus
In a difficult top-score competition at the
CSI Dresden/Germany, Amatus by Acorado/
Wanderer (breeder: Günter Brattka, Oebisfelde)
placed forth under Stefan Unterlandstättner

Callaham VDL (VA)
In the two-phase jumper class of the Youngster
Cup, which took place on the first Advent
weekend in Dresden, Callahan VDL by Contendro/For
Pleasure (breeder: Joachim Tobaben,
Buxtehude) finished in third place under
Cameron Hanley from Ireland.

Calme P (VA)
This son of Calido/Alme (breeder: Wilfried
Niemann, Beverstedt) moved to Austria as an
licensed stallion. Now he won his first international
Grand Prix in Wiener Neustadt/Austria.
Under rider Nina Brand, the nine-year old
won with a three-minute time lead.
Carlotta Singular la Magnifica (VA)
After a successful show career in Germany,
Carlotta Singular la Magnifica by Chasseur/
Singular Joter (breeder: Hans Meier, Selsingen)
arrived in Canada. At a World Cup competition
in Toronto/Canada, she placed third
in a time class.
Constantin B (VA)
For the first time an international jumper
competition took place in Sauldorf Boll/Germany.
Constantin B by Contendro/Espri
(breeder: Helmut Bischof, Beverstedt) was
one of the first victorious horses. Under Hans-
Dieter Dreher, he won the first qualification
on the large circuit.
Contendro-Star
Hanoverian horses celebrated a double victory
in the Grand Prix of Wiener Neustadt. Contendro-Star
by Contendro/Rabino (breeder:
Jürgen Walinski, Driftsethe) under Helmut
Morbitzer from Austria placed second behind
Calme P.
Cederick
This son of Chasseur/Rabino (breeder: Breeding
Farm Staats, Bahrdorf) placed second in a
two-phase jumper class at medium level in
Boll under Swiss rider Daniel Etter. In the following
six-bars competition, the nine-year old
won after the third jump-off.
Checkmate
In Stuttgart/Germany, Checkmate by Contender/Pik
Bube II (breeder: Renate Gerlach,
Sulingen) was one of the winners. Under rider
Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, the team
world champion won a time class.
Donna D (VA)
In 2003 Donna D by Drosselklang II/Polydor
(breeder: Angelika Cording, Wagenfeld) was
one of the top-selling jumper horses at Verden’s
elite auction and found a new home in
Brazil. Now the bay returned to Europe. At the
Master Show in Brussels/Belgium, she placed
second in a competition with high purse under
her rider Karina Harbich Kohannpeter.
One week later, the Hanoverian-Brazilian
Successful indoors: La Cucaracha and Jan Sprehe
placed fifth in Maastricht.
combination placed fifth in the Ladies Trophy
in Salzburg/Austria. In a time class the pair
was faultless and finished in forth place.
Class de Luxe
Class de Luxe by Contendro/Stakkato (breeder:
Dieter Kuhlmann, Wanderup) completed
his first class of the SML-Tour Large in Dresden
with only one time-fault. The eight-year
old stallion and his rider Herbert Ulonska finished
in third position.
Ehrgeiz B
Ehrgeiz B was the name of the winner of the
first qualification for the Youngster Cup from
Dresden. The son of El Bundy/Landsieger
(breeder: Broer amd Andreas Bruns, Hesel)
with his rider Jan Sprehe led the field of competitors
with more than one-and-a-half seconds.
In the two-phase jumper class, the pair
did beautifully as well finishing forth with a
faultless round.
Elan Rouge
This son of Espri/Lanthan (breeder: Gerhard
Finck, Padingbüttel) won the Youngster Tour
on the second CSI in Cellje/Slovenia. Linda
Bratomi from Italy rode the liver chestnut.
Little Lady and Michael Whitaker placed fifth at
the World Cup jumping competition in Stuttgart.

Elysian
At his international debut, Marc Boes rode
Elysian by Earl/Prince Thatch xx (breeder:
Bernhard and Britta Nordbeck, Isterberg) to
victory in the first class of the young horse
tour in Celje. She placed third in the final.
Eafons Escape
Anna-Julia Kontio from Finland rode Escape
by Espri/Golfclub (breeder: Hermann Heissenbüttel,
Hagen) into forth place at a 1,45-meter
class in Stockholm/Sweden.
Escobar
Escobar by Escudo/Grundstein (breeder:
Hans-Heinrich Lochte, Ohe) won the opening
class at the German Masters in Stuttgart with
his rider Thomas Weinberg. The eleven-year
old placed second in another class.
Ex escudo orior
At an international Advent Show in Dresden,
Ex escudo orior by Escudo/Calypso II (breeder:
Hinrich Bartels, Wittingen) finished his first
jumper class of the SML Tour-Large without
any mistakes placing second with his rider
Udo Klötzel. In a top-score class, the pair finished
in fifth position.
Flashlight
Flashlight by Fly High/Calido went for his first
international competition to Celje. At the
World Cup competition, the eight-year old
placed second in a time class with Amke Stroman
in the saddle. In Budapest, the mare finished
in third place in a Grand Prix.

In the Speed-Master of Stuttgart, Floronce by
Freedom/Lombard (breeder: Helmut Ortgies,
Loxstedt) placed forth under Paul Hofmann.
Germaine (Hessian)
Germaine by Grand Canyon/Adishan (breeder:
Uwe Hossbach, Ringgau-Rittmannshausen)
won the final of the Gold Tour at the
CSI in Salzburg under Heinz Eufinger.

In the first qualification for the Grand Prix of

Anna Gkousova from Russia rode Grannie by

two-phase jumping competition at the CSI in

In the jump-off for the victory of the qualifying
class for the Grand Prix of Maastricht/The
Netherlands, La Cucaracha by Landclassic/
Cheenook (breeder: Hubert Knigge, Ahlden)
finished in fifth position with four penalty
points under rider Jan Sprehe.
Leilani K
Leilani K by Landclassic/Cheenook is another
internationally successful jumper competitor
from breeder Knigge, Ahlden. The nine-year
old placed fifth in the finale of the Gold Tour
from Salzburg under rider Sebastian Schneller
von Cetto.
Let’s Fly
After a longer break, Let’s Fly by Lordanos/
Forrest xx (breeder: Uwe Dreesmann, Hesel) is
once again successfully competing. At the CSI
in Paris, Rodrigo Pessoa rode the eleven-year
old into second place in a class with a jumpoff
for the victory.
Little Lady (VA)
In the World Cup-jumper competition in
Stuttgart, which was well attended by a
strong string of jumper competitors, the just
nine-year old Little Lady by Laptop/Grannus
(breeder: Wiebke Hannken, Alfter) placed fifth
with a faultless round under rider Michael
Whitaker. In front of the impressive background
in Paris/France, Little Lady finished
third in the qualification for the Grand Prix.
Loretta
In the Large Tour of the Escon Spring Club in
Oldenburg, Loretta by Le Cou Cou/Gralsritter
(breeder: Lars Nieberg, Homberg) won the
two-phase jumper competition with rider
Ansgar Schmidt. She had already secured the
2nd place-ribbon for a time-and-fault jumper
class.
Pia Pacelli N
Oldenburg was the station of the European
Youngster Cups for riders under 25 years of
age. During the horse show, Pia Pacelli N by
Pius Pacelli/Goldcup (breeder: Holger Niebuhr,
Saalfeld) placed third in the first qualifying
competition with rider Christian Glienewinkel.
Quax (Hessian)
Without any jumping faults, Quax by Quincy
Jones/Donar (breeder: Ralf Litz, Eiterfeld) and
his partner Werner Muff finished in third
place in a jumper competition after time and
faults at the CSI in Dresden. At the Amadeus
Fidji Island ridden by Timo Beck came in second
in Stutgart.
Horse Indoors in Salzburg, the pair placed
fifth in a standard jumper class with a good
purse.
Quick Stepp (VA)
Quick Stepp by Quidam’s Rubin/Grand Cru
(breeder: Henry and Petra Budde, Kirchtimke)
found his way from Verden’s auction program
to international competition. Under Swiss rider
Urs Fäh, the seven-year old placed third in
a jumper competition of the Young Horses
Tour in Linz.
Shaitaan
At the jumper show in Neeroeteren/Belgium
Shaitaan by Stolzenberg/For Future (breeder:
Lutz Wimmer, Helmstedt) placed third in a
two-phase-jumper class for young horses
with his rider Frederik Knorren. In a speed
class, the six-year old placed fifth. von Cetto.
Shine A Light VA
At the second CSI-weekend in Leszno/Poland,
Shine A Light VA by Chasseur/Gimpel (breeder:
Annegret and Volker Ahrens, Vollersrode)
began the competition weekend with a victory
in the first class of the Youngster-Tour. The
grey and his rider Martin Fuchs placed third
in the final.
Shutterfly
Shutterfly did not give any other participants
a chance in the jumping competition for the
Mercedes German Masters in Stuttgart. Under
his rider Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum,

this son of Silvio/Forrest xx (breeder: Uwe
Dresmann, Hesel) won the competition in a
jump-off by a margin of more than a second
ahead of Marcus Ehning on Plot Blue.
Simply the Red
The European Youngster-Cup for young riders
took place in Dresden. Simply the Red
by Stakkato/Caletto (breeder: Rolf Palandt,
Bockenem) finished the first qualification in
third position with rider Andreas Theurer.
Temple Road
Temple Road by Antaeus/Graf Dagobert
(breeder: Karl Rabeler, Egestorf) continued
his successful indoor circuit in Wieze/Belgium,
when he won a speed class with rider
Shane Carey.
Ukato
Ukato by Stakkato/Literat (breeder: Breeding
Farm Lewitz, Muehlen) won the Grand Prix of
Dresden with his rider Willem Greve. With this
victory, the pair won their first car of their still
young career. In the jump-off, the nine-year
old literally left behind his fellow competitors
by almost three seconds. Only seven days prior,
the stallion was just beat in the jump-off
for the Grand Prix of Maastricht placing second.
He continued his success story in Salzburg,
where Ukato won the championship
and placed second in a speed class.
Czech Republik
Hanoverian Talk
The interest in the Hanoverian breed is huge
in the Czech Republic. The Horse Breeding Association
Nachodsko invited Veronika Jiroutova,
a long-standing correspondent of the
Hanoverian Association in early December .
She introduced and explained the breeding
program and the work of the training and
sale center at a general meeting. n
FRH Quaid
Quaid now has a new first name. This son of Quidam’s Rubin/Voltaire (breeder: Friedhelm Vehlber,
Espelkamp) will soon compete as FRH Quaid. Johannes Ehning has carefully prepared the
Federal Champion from 2009 for international competitions. The renowned Staj Mustang purchased
the bay on the stallion sales. The jumper horse producer will be available to breeders
through the State Stud Celle. „FRH“ stands for the Hanoverian supportors‘ club.
USA
Second Test in U.S.A.
A stallion performance test has taken place
on Silver Creek Farms in Oklahoma now for
the second time. The thirteen participating
stallions descended from various European
sport horse breeds. Color Guard by Escudo/
Federalist (by For Pleasure) (breeder: The Royal
Canadian Mounted Police) finished in second
place with an overall index of 118,65
points. He placed first in the jumper index
with a score of 127. His owner Katriina Ruotsalo
had bought him as a yearling on the auction
of the Canadian Police. The Hanoverian
Ramzes by Rienzi/Pik Solo placed seventh
with a total index of 103,56 points. Sylvan
Farm from Washington State is the breeder
Sport
and the owner. Colour Guard as well as Ramzes
are not yet licensed. n
Master’s Sire 2010:
Moosbachhof’s Goldwing
The title “Master’s Sire” was bestowed at
the German Masters Show in Stuttgart for
the second time. This award recognizes a sire
that has performed very well in competition
and breeding. The breed associations from
Southern Germany together with the show
management of the German Masters selected
the eleven-year old Moosbachhof’s Goldwing.
His sire Goldfever had become Hanoverian
Stallion of the Year four weeks earlier.
The dark bay (breeder: Manfred Gerken,
Oyten) participated at the World Equestrian
Games in Kentucky under Hungarian Nation
Prize rider Sandor Szasz. Goldwing qualified
twice for the Federal Bundeschampianate
for jumper horses as a younger horse.
The privately owned sire descends from Lu-
Moosbachshof Goldwing.
carlo/Dorfjunge on the dam side of the
pedigree. He is a descendant of the family
of Pauline from Brandenburg a line that is
cultivated at the State Stud Neustadt-Dosse.
This damline has produced the licensed
sires Samba Hit I through V, the two-time
Bundes- and World Champion Poetin I as
well as Neustadt’s top producer Quaterback.
Petra and Stefan Wiesenberger manage
the stallion station Moosbachhof in
Natternbach, Austria. They had bought
“Goldi” – as they call him affectionately –
as a yearling from breeder Manfred Gerken.
Moosbachhof’s Goldwing will be standing
at stud at the stallion station of Sandor
Szasz in Fruhsdorf, Bavaria. n

The collection of the 2nd Alsfeld Advent included
38 Hessian and Hanoverian dressage and jumper
horses from three to six years of age. Numerous
youngsters already had a show record proving their
talents. The selection committee had put a group of
horses together that fulfilled the desires and expectations
of prospective buyers. Customer advisor
Jeanine Pagel stated days before the auction, “We
receive several buyer requests wishing to try the
horses every day. Customers come visiting from all
over Germany – from Munich to Hamburg.”
Let’s Dance sets the tone
The first horse of the auction set the tone in the
sold-out arena: The typy Let’s Dance by London
Swing/Silvano was brilliant every time he performed.
A training facility in Lower Saxony purchased
the Hanoverian for Euro 41,000.00. The day
in Alsfeld was especially exciting for breeder and
exhibitor Reiner Bechstein from Alsheim. One of his
horses found a new home through the auction program
for the first time and the breeder was accompanied
by an editor from a Hessian radio station
and his crew, a camera man and a sound engineer
for a news contribution all day long. Reiner Bechstein
patiently answered all questions and allowed
them to film every step he took only to be called
“Bernd Osterloh” during the more than 4-minute
long piece on Sunday night in HR 3 – very sad for
the passionate breeder and exhibitor.
Reglisse by Rascalino/Woodstock (breeder/exhibitor:
Henning Brandt, Walsrode) became the highest
priced horse. The powerfully moving mare showed
off her talents and impressed with her elastic trot
movement. Team Olympic champion Martin
Schaudt secured this top athlete for himself at Euro
42,000.00. Reglisse was not the only auction par-

ticipant to convince this expert from Baden-Würtemberg.
He also bought the Hessian mare Shahira
S by Sandro King/Dartagnan (breeder/exhibitor: ZG
Seim, Alsfeld). The highest priced jumper was fouryear
old Sherry by Stolzenberg/Graf Grannus
(breeder/exhibitor: August Struss, Elze). Horse experts
from Russia bought this jumper talent for
Euro 32,000.00. 38 auction candidates sold for an
average price of Euro 14,831.57 being about Euro
3,000 more than last year. Three youngsters found
new homes in foreign countries.
Customers from the South well served
Hanoverian horses dominated that weekend in November.
Satchmo under Isabell Werth and Shutterfly
under Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum led the way at
Germany’s most important indoor show in Stuttgart
the German Masters. The Hanoverian Association
was represented with an information booth where
the Alsfeld Advent was the main topic. Two buyers
watched their contact people buy their selected
candidates live via telephone. An ideal combination
of sport and breed!
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen commended after the
conclusion of the auction, “This was a really good
ending of the year 2010. The peoples enthusiasm
was amazing.” Breeding manager Dr. Werner
Schade positively summarized the event; “We made
a significant leap forward with the second sale here
in Alsfeld. The increase in the quality of the horses
was well received. New customers from Hessian
and from South Germany as well as international
regular clients bought horses.”
One could feel the after-effects of the impressive
auction results days later at the Hessian horse center.
Especially the sale figures for auction horses
from all over Germany that sold to Southern territories
confirmed and proved the goal to further expand
and strengthen the Horse Center Alsfeld as a
Hanoverian foothold. Manager Bernd Osterloh
comments pleasingly, “Numerous breeders called
us to congratulate us. They are so pleased that Alsfeld
once again has become a solid institution. We
want to continue on this road.”
Blossoming
Visitors and interested customers realized that Alsfeld
Advent was blossoming as they put foot on the
ground of the Hessian equine center: A small
Christmas bazaar awaited them with unusual
present ideas and mulled wine creating a pleasant
Advent atmosphere.
The Christmas bazaar was not the only innovation:
A gala evening was organized on Friday before the
auction which attracted a great number of horse
enthusiasts from the region around Alsfeld. As a
matter of fact the arena was sold out. The organizational
team from the Hessian equine center around
manager Bernd Osterloh, Jeanine Pagel and Steffen
Werner from the central office in Verden had put a
colorful program together including a presentation
of several auction candidates ridden by Andreas
Mueller, Philipp Ruwe and Dorothee Lehan. Robertico
by Rodgau the typy state sire from Dillenburg
also showed off. After all his four-year old son Ratouche
was a member of Alsfeld’s auction collection.
The guests were extremely impressed by the performance
of Dr. Angelika Trabert on Ariva Avanti.
The anesthesiologist was born without legs. She
has become one of the world’s most successful
handicaped riders. The 43-year old has earned 14
silver and three gold medals at international championships
up tp now. She returned home to Offenbach
with a gold medal for her ride on a just sevenyear
old Hessian mare by Alabaster from the World
Equestrian Games in Kentucky. The reigning German
Champion and Twice World Champion in driving
one-in-hand, Thorsten Zarembowicz and Dieter
Lauterbach from the State Stud Dillenburg created
a lot of excitement within the crowd when they performed
a head-to-head race against the time. Presentations
of the vaulting team from RFV Edertal, a
cute dog show, a dancing performance of the
dance group Streetgang and an award celebration
for the best mares and their breeders of the regional
show rounded up the program creating an entertaining
and animated evening with moderator

Breeder’s Portrait
Gerd Janssen is a farmer by profession. He
took over the family operation at the age of
24 in 1978. Today he is still farmimg on 75 hectares
of grazing and cropland. He started out with
25 dairy cows; today there are 68. 25 noble Hanoverians
have taken the place of the two working
horses. “I have always been a horse enthusiast,”
Gerd Janssen says laughingly, “I inherited that
trait from my grandfather.” He was a horse trader
importing workhorses from Russia and Lithuania.
“Hard to imagine today,” the passionate breeder
explains. “My grandfather bought 100 horses at a
time. They were tied together at their tails and
halters to groups of ten and shipped to Berlin by
train. My grandfather and his two helpers led the
entire group of horses from market to market offering
them for sale. Often he returned to Aurich
with only two horses left.” Gerd Janssen biked
along the fields in East Frisia to watch the mares
and foals from being a small boy. “I really wanted
my own little breeding program.” His dream finally
came true at the age of fifteen. The teen
picked a colt and a filly. Grandfather was consulted.
The two weanlings were bought after he said
ok. “I sold them again as two-year olds. It just
took way too long! I wanted a broodmare.” He
found her in a pre-studbook mare by Gabriel. It
was the fate of all East Frisian mares to be recorded
in the pre-studbook after the unification of
the Frisian studbook with the Hanoverian Association.
Gerd Janssen was enthused about the mare’s
movement, her jumping ability and her type, and
so he accepted the pre-studbook registration. He
bred the mare to Grande and so entered the
breeding business. “All her descendants have
been good jumpers. I had sold one of her offspring
to Southern Germany. She was my advertisement.
Sport horses were higher in demand in Southern
Germany than in our area at the time so I was able
to sell many of my products there.” His dad a successful
event competitor himself accepted the
new business avenue. Gerd Janssen’s own riding
skills did not improve much. “Yes, I did ride a little.
However the lessons took place at a riding school
called ‘Harlinger Reitercorps’ which was located
18 kilometers away. Every now and again I drove
there on my tractor pulling a trailer with my
horse.”

Permanent address
The sales at the home barn were very successful
during the eighties and the nineties. Four to five
foals were born each year and were sold as two-
and three-year olds. “Horst Rimkus and Holga Finken
we were a permanent address for many auction
riders from Verden like Hartmut Kettelhodt,” Gerd
Janssen recollects happily. “They bought at our
farm, trained the youngsters and often sold them
through the auction program.” One of his foundation
mares is a daughter of the first-purchased prestudbook
mare. “The last time we bred her we selected
the Anglo-Norman Furioso II. First Lady was
born the following year. “I owe so much to this
mare,” Gerd Janssen says with pride. Among others
she is also the dam of Lady Sunshine by Landsieger
who is still a cornerstone of his breeding program.
In connection with Lordanos she produced the licensed
sire Lokomotion who is now stationed in
the United States. She produced another four fullsiblings
with Lordanos, All found new homes
through Verden’s auction program.
Landgräfin by Landadel/Furioso II was another jewel.
She is now retired on the farm and 16 years old.
Landgräfin is the dam of La Melonja by Lordanos
who successfully competed in jumper classes at the
S-level under Matthias Mock and the dam of La
Corazon also by Lordanos who is licensed in the
United States. The breeding program of Family Janssen
includes ten broodmares: Larissa by Lordanos,
Bonita by Bonheur, Starlight by Stedinger, Paloma
by Picard and Classic Lady by Charon. Daughter Andrea
Janssen also being a passionate horse lover
owns Felizitas by Falkenstern II, Leena by Lordanos
and Love Story by Lauries Crusador xx, who was
bought on Verden’s mare auction in 2009.
Family ties
“The generational change today is a big event,”
Gerd Janssen explains. “It would be horrible for me
if my breeding program were to slowly but steadily
dissipate.” Fortunately the continuation is secured.
Daughter Andrea is a head nurse at the hospital in
Wittmund. She loves Hanoverians just as much as
her dad. She alone decides which stallions to breed
to her mares. “We discuss the quality of the stallions
in detail though,” the 27-year old explains.
The Janssens have been breeding jumper horses for
30 years. The now 55-year old also discovered his
interest in dressage horses ten years ago. He understands
the differences in marketing his athletic
youngsters. “Jumper riders do not really mind the
type. Ability and style count. We sell dressage horses
mostly to women. They prefer beautiful, longlegged
types with a dark coat if possible.” Both
Janssens take the stallion selection very seriously.
Studies on inheritable traits are checked for validation.
They visit every auction in Verden as well as
federal championships, stallion licensings and stallion
presentations. Mom Antje who gladly supports
the equine passion of her husband and daughter
enjoys accompanying both.
Performance is important
The stallion’s performance is of utmost importance
to Gerd Janssen. “A stallion’s competition performance
results are very important to me. I would never
choose a stallion I have not personally seen being
presented on the pavement.” One can notice a serious
preference for the sire Lordanos whilst comparing
the pedigrees of his products. “I have used him
regularly over the past ten years because he is a
really good fit to my mares. This is an exception
though. I usually also give younger producers a
chance if their offspring are convincing.”
The Janssen familys´ marketing program has
changed a lot over the passed thirty years. Regular
clients visit when foals are born. “But sales directly
from home have drastically decreased. Verden’s
auction program has become the best opportunity
for us to market foals,” so Gerd Janssen. “The auction
team does a great job and the Hanoverian Association
can be very proud of their enormous,
worldwide clientele.” The Janssens have sold 26
foals and riding horses through Verden’s auctions
over the past 10 years. The breeder knows what he
must do to make this happen. “I have to travel
2000 kilometers if I want to sell a foal in Verden:
pre-selection, photo shoot, auction and delivery. It
is worth it though!”
Plans for the future
You cannot breed horses if your heart is not with it.
Gerd Janssen tries to keep up with important show
results of his offspring. “I visit many horse shows
and watch some on television.” That is how he remembers
the most beautiful event in his 30-year
long career as a breeder. “I had goose-bumps sitting
in front of my TV watching Michael Whitaker
on Landfürst by Landadel/Picard, a horse I bred,
when they participated at the Derby in Hamburg.”
He also associates his saddest occurrence with this
horse when Landfürst endured a shattering fracture
shortly after the derby at the CHIO in Aachen and
had to be put to sleep.
Changes will take place in Neuschoo in three to
four years. “We are planning to part with the dairy
cows and expand the stabling for horses,” Gerd
Janssen describes his plans. “We will also allow a
bio gas plant to grow corn on part of our land, too.”
The broodmare herd will be enlarged and a few box
stalls will be rented out to boarders. n
