In the past two decades, computers and the Internet have changedthe world. People now communicate faster, more often, and in differentways. So far, more than10,000 women have been trained <strong>to</strong> run the <strong>business</strong>es, and 4,000more are being trained each year.In Pakistan, under President Rozgar, reduced-rateloans and payback deferrals have enabled creationof more than 1,000 telecenters. These new,technology-based centers are run by <strong>small</strong>-<strong>business</strong> owners whoprovide their rural communities with the opportunity <strong>to</strong> use sharedPCs and communicate by phone, fax, and e-mail.In Thailand, the Tourism Authority, <strong>Intel</strong>, TT&T,and Google have combined <strong>to</strong> offer hardware,software, and other technology that aids <strong>small</strong>and medium enterprises (SMEs). Through the “Amazing i-Business forSME” program, <strong>small</strong> and medium <strong>business</strong>es gain low-cost access <strong>to</strong>broadband, Web hosting services, and more that can help them bemore productive.In Turkey, the Ministry of Education has workedwith <strong>Intel</strong> <strong>to</strong> create public Internet access centers(PIACs) that give citizens—including <strong>small</strong> <strong>business</strong>es—free Internet access. Farmers in remote areas are among those whohave taken advantage of the online information, services, and resourcesavailable at the more than 4,500 PIACs implemented around the country.In Vietnam, with the help of WiMAX,* a high-capacitywireless broadband solution, hotels in the Lào Caiprovince now use Voice-over-Internet Pro<strong>to</strong>col (VoIP)<strong>to</strong> entice <strong>to</strong>urists and adventure travelers. Hospitals use technology <strong>to</strong>access the latest medical information online and through VoIP, andInternet cafés serve residents and <strong>to</strong>urists. In addition, <strong>small</strong> <strong>business</strong>escan now access government services more easily, and more aggressivelypursue trade relationships with neighboring countries.5
