We wish all our customers awonderful Christmas…Great Britain came third in the Paralympic medaltable with 36 golds and 120 medals in total. Thepressure must have been immense for all athletes. We congratulate all those who took part for theirdedication and success. Please note our offer to reduce the cost of a siliconecosmeses during January and February. We are seeing abig increase in requests for funky new finishes to clients’limb sockets. Danny, our resident expert on these finishes,is coming up with some really creative ideas. So if you havea request for the finish on your next socket let us know. With regard to new ideas, have a look at our websiteand watch the videos of the new ‘bionic’ hands and kneesnow available. Prosthetic technology is progressing fasterthan I have ever known. With this in mind, we are creatingnew areas within our Ringwood Clinic to allow clients totrial advanced knees and feet on differing terrain/slopes.Finally, Christmas and New Year are almost uponus, so may I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and aprosperous and successful 2013.Bob WattsFollow us onBebionic robotichand gives anew lease of lifeHertfordshire-based Nigel Ackland lost his arm in an industrial accident in2006. After enduring six months of operations and infections, Nigel decidedto have an elective below elbow amputation. The severity of the injury meant his amputation wasn’t straightforward andleft him with a flared residual limb and difficulty finding a suitable prosthesis. Hissolicitor referred him to Dorset Orthopaedic. Nigel said, “I've been to Dorset’sMidlands Clinic several times and have felt welcome there since day one.”At the time Nigel still had the NHS prosthesis he was fitted with followingthe amputation. Uncomfortable with the fit and look of the arm, he wanted toexplore alternative options.Prosthetist Mark Woolsey assessed Nigel to be an ideal candidate for thebebionic2 robotic hand. Nigel adapted well to the bebionic2, enjoying itsmovement and realistic appearance. His new arm enabled him to do everydaytwo-handed tasks like driving, typing, shopping and washing his hands.53 year-old Nigel was invited to be one of seven people worldwide totrial the next generation of carbon fibre hand, the bebionic3, by RSL Steeper, the creator of the hand. This new myoelectric hand is incredibly sensitive. Thedelicate tuning means Nigel can crack an egg without getting any shell in thebowl, a skill plenty of people with the use of both hands struggle to master.Nigel says, “The functionality of the bebionic3 enables me to give myremaining arm some rest. Count how many moves and wiggles you have tomake in order to put your trousers on with one hand and you'll get some idea;dressing myself is now much easier.”He went on to say: “Having a bebionic hand is like being human again.Psychologically I wouldn’t be without it. I can hold the phone, shake hands andwash my left hand normally and I’m back to being a two finger typist!”Featured in the national press and on the Alan Titchmarsh Show he added,“It's made a huge difference to my day-to-day life and health.”“It’s like being my old self, with a very cool piece of machinery helping me.”No limits Winter 2012
