2009 Newsletter - Issue 1 * For our donors, volunteers, advocates and friends in the Alzheimer’s community.
The 36 Hour Day is long considered the
“Bible” of Alzheimer’s care for families.
Jamie Simpson recounts,
“Several years ago my
grandfather started with
some forgetfulness. Over
time the memory issues
increased. Then one day he
was pulled over by a police
offi cer because he simply
could not remember how
to get home. It really took
a situation like that to open
our eyes.”
the Alzheimer’s Association
If you have been a dementia caregiver any
length of time, you have probably heard about
and been helped by this great resource, The
36-Hour Day.
Now, the co-author Dr. Peter Rabins is
coming to the Miami Valley to give us his
about weather to a group
of dementia caregivers
on a Caregiver Getaway.
He mentioned that his
grandfather was struggling
at the time, and one of our
staff started him off with
our information packet.
“After connecting with
the Miami Valley Chapter
Alzheimer’s Association, I
learned I was not alone.”
Dear Reader:
My note to you this issue is all about
thank yous. The Miami Valley Chapter
and I as the Executive Director are so
very fortunate to have so many wonderful
individuals that keep us going and allow
us to fulfi ll our Mission.
First and foremost are the dedicated staff
and volunteers without whom we would
not exist. There is no staff member at
the Chapter who is here just for the job.
Each individual has a true passion for
our Mission and a desire to do whatever
it takes to provide the fi nest care and
support to persons living with dementia
and their caregivers. They truly support
each other, and never once have I heard
“That’s not my job.” The teamwork
shown by Chapter staff is truly exemplary.
They are willing to do whatever it takes
to make that happen as are the volunteers
without whom we could not exist.
The staff and Board were recently
saddened by the loss of one of our
favorite longtime volunteers, Leo Betts.
Leo and his wonderful wife Gertrude
have volunteered for the Chapter for
many years. Gertrude has volunteered for
the Chapter since the early days when it
was housed in a trailer at Miami Valley
Hospital, and Leo was always by her side.
The Chapter would not be what it is if
We off er another special thank you to
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and the
Ohio Legislature. The recent Budget
process has been grueling because of
Ohio’s worsening economy. We were
extremely fearful that our Respite Line
Item through which we fund a portion
of our Family Assistance Program
would receive drastic cuts. We learned
only recently that it didn’t, and we are
extremely grateful that it was maintained
at previous levels.
We also off er special thanks to Barb
Reilly, Director of the Ohio Department
of Aging and to Ohio’s #1 Alzheimer’s
advocate Ginni Ragan for all they did on
behalf of our families. We know though
that the budget battle is not over, and that
we must continue to advocate to assure
that our families continue to receive
the services they so desperately need.
The Chapter has a dynamic Advocacy
Committee that is working on state and
federal issues, and if you’d be interested
in being a part of it, let me know at judy.
We also thank retiring staff member
Laurice Sherrer and Board of Directors
members Bill Springer and John Sullivan.
Bill remains active with support groups,
Caregiver Focus
New Monthly E-newsletter
We hear two main concerns from
caregivers: 1) a great sense of isolation
that can occur and 2) the need for
on-going information as the disease
constantly changes.
In response, this past April the Miami
Valley Chapter Alzheimer’s Association
began Caregiver Focus, a monthly
e-newsletter to better connect with
our caregivers across our nine county
service area. area. As this is new, we are
hoping for feedback from caregivers caregivers to
improve the service.
The Ask...
1) If you would like to receive the Caregiver Focus please email patricia.
roby@alz.org and let her know.
2) If you are receiving the e-newsletter already and have feedback on how to
improve it please contact patricia.roby@alz.org.
and John is working on a new fundraiser in conjunction
with Capri Bowling Lanes which will be announced
soon. Steve Arnold recently completed his 2 year term
as President of the Board, and we more than appreciate
all his eff orts on behalf of the Chapter during his tenure.
Fortunately, his term has not expired on the Board,
and we can continue to benefi t from his knowledge
and fi nancial acumen! We also thank Janelle Forbes for
graciously accepting the presidency of the Board for the
next year and welcome Dave Dudon and Shirley Finley as
new members!
True heroes to us are the individuals diagnosed with early
stage dementia who attended our fi rst ever Early Stage
Town Hall. We know it wasn’t easy for many of them to
attend, but they have so very much to teach us as we strive
to make our programs/services the best they can possibly
be. A special thank you to our friend from the Dayton
I want to close with personal thank yous. This last year has
been very diffi cult for me and for my family. My beloved
husband John was diagnosed with another devastating
disease ALS which eventually caused us to lose him on
May 26, 2009. I was out of the offi ce for many days at a
time and could not have done so without my Alzheimer’s
family. My children and I are eternally grateful for all the
love and support we were given by staff and volunteers.
I truly knew that I was never alone and could not have
done as I did without them. I truly understand what thank
you from the bottom of my heart means.
further help or information on how to
live, to cope with their new diagnosis.
On June 20, 2009 over 60 people
diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s
or dementia attended our fi rst local
early stage town hall forum.
Because of the stigma and the fear
of accepting the disease, most never
reach out, but thanks to the work
of the Alzheimer’s Association Brain
Wellness Task Force (BWTF) and the
Dayton Daily News, a room full of early
diagnosed individuals took the step of
faith to come out and share their stories.
When the BWTF started planning the
event they had hoped for 15-20 people
and that itself would be a leap of faith.
Having registered 18 attendees a week
before the program, the committee
reached out to Jim DeBrosse of the
Dayton Daily News. One brave person
diagnosed with the disease willingly
shared her and her husband’s story with
the reporter and the rest, as they say, is
history.
“On the day the story landed on the
front page of the Dayton Daily News,
our phones rang off the hook,” said Julie
Worley, Director of Family Assistance
(continued from page 1)
for the Alzheimer’s Association Miami
Valley Chapter. By the end of the day
over 140 total people had registered.
At the meeting we had 105 people
with 50-60 diagnosed with early stage
dementia!
A big thank you to the BWTF who worked
Caregiver Essentials: Planning for 2010
In 2009 we introduced the Caregiver Essentials (a
seven part monthly education program) after surveying
caregivers about education needs. Using only email to cut
the mailing costs, we hoped to reach 6-8 caregivers per
month. With great delight, we have had 20+ on average
every month from 5-6 different counties.
The only complaints received were that the series was
offered only in Kettering and during the daytime, so we
are planning on offering a second location and possibly a third if resources allow.
We are also hoping to expand from 7 to 9 months of education programs!
We now have a list of 20+ possible programs that caregivers have suggested
over the past year and we need to fi nd out which programs caregivers would like
most and when and where you are available. Visit www.alzdayton.com to fi ll out
a survey on-line or call Eric VanVlymen at (937) 291-3332 to receive one by mail.
Gene and Nancy Schwartz:
A Special Memorial
The Miami Valley Chapter
recently received a
generous bequest from
the Nancy and Gene
Schwartz Estate. These
funds will enable the
Chapter to continue
providing personalized
hope and help through
education and support to
the over 30,000 persons
in the Miami Valley with
Alzheimer’s disease and
other dementing illnesses
kept the newly formed advocacy
committee busy over the past
year. In March of this year, fi ve
representatives went to Washington
DC to advocate our core message,
increased dollars for medical
research. Then in April, over 35
chapter advocates boarded the
bus to Columbus and talked with
state senators and representatives
primarily on the continued
funding for the state Alzheimer’s
respite funding.
After being trained, the committee
is gearing up for our fall advocacy
recruitment at our memory walks
and at the November family forum.
A program providing training to
new Advocates will follow.
Our biggest news is that our respite
line item that funds a portion
of our programs and the respite
services we are able to deliver did
and their families and on
a national level to support
advocacy and research.
Nancy and Gene were
both born in Cincinnati,
Ohio and were childhood
sweethearts. They were
married in August of 1952.
Nancy loved homemaking
and Gene was an
engineer at Price Brothers
Company for many years.
Nancy passed away in
not receive a cut in this year’s state
budget! Given the fi scal climate,
this represents a real win for our
Ohio caregivers!
Thanks to all who attended the
2009 Memory Day in Columbus
and to Ginni Ragan our wonderful
volunteer who works day and
night with our state legislature to
promote the Alzheimer’s cause and
the state line item. Together we
truly made a diff erence.
Because our newsletter has a limited amount of space, we will be shortening our list of
Honorariums & Memorials to the name of the person being honored or memorialized.
Please note also that these two lists have been combined. If you have any questions,
please contact Teresa Thomas (937) 291-3332 or teresa.thomas@alz.org.
passed away fi rst, they both agreed that
giving to charity during one’s lifetime
and making gifts to charity at one’s
passing was of paramount importance.
They lived very frugally and felt that it
was important to give back.
Mr. Schwartz called the Miami Valley
Chapter frequently to ask about
services. He wanted to assure that he
was meeting his wife’s every need and
that he was doing the very best for her.
With their bequest, the Schwartz’s join
a special group of men and woman,
in the Circle of Hope, who believe
in our tradition and mission. It is a
group pledge to ensure that the Miami
Valley Chapter will continue to work
to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease. For
each individual aff ected by Alzheimer’s
disease, there is a need for hope for
generations to come.
How can I become a member of
the CIRCLE OF HOPE?
One form of giving is a Will bequest:
We hope you will let us know when
you have named the Alzheimer’s
Association in your will as we would
like the opportunity to thank you for
your generosity during your lifetime.
There are many other ways to make a
gift from your estate, and the staff of
the Miami Valley Chapter would be
happy to meet with you about some of
those options.
For more details on how to create one
of these gifts and become a member
of the CIRCLE OF HOPE, please call
We’ve already heard many
Daytonians express joy
over the change, because
of its sentimental value.
Second, we have a new
fundraising model that
removes the registration
fee of $25. Thus anyone
can come to the walks.
Those who fundraise as
individuals at least $100
or more will then receive
a 2009 MW t-shirt as
their incentive prize. We
believe that this model
will ultimately help us
reach our 2009 goal of
$275,000.
We look forward to
seeing you in the fall!
