June 28, 2010Dear Detroit Public Schools Parents and Guardians:In an effort to give parents and students an opportunity to have the option to enroll in a Detroit Public School oftheir choice, we are pleased to announce the “Open Enrollment Initiative.” This initiative will allow students toelect to attend any Detroit Public School without being required to live within the boundary for that school.Please be advised that the “Open Enrollment Initiative” does not apply to the Examination High Schools, nordoes it apply to the Application Schools.The “Open Enrollment Initiative” registration period is scheduled as follows:• Students Impacted by School Closures: July 6 – 16, 2010• Students Not Impacted by School Closures: July 16 – 23, 2010• Students Receiving Special Education Services: July 6 – August 31, 2010Students may enroll in the school of their interest as long as the school has not reached capacity for theirparticular grade. Enrollment preference will be given to students who live within the boundary of a school. Itshould also be noted that transportation will not be provided for students who select a school outside of theboundary of their home school. Transportation is provided for students who attend school within theirhome school boundary and meet the District’s criteria for transportation. All Detroit Public Schoolsfamilies:• may elect to have their students attend any Detroit Public School without being requiredto live within that school’s boundary.• may not elect enrollment in examination high schools or application schools during thisinitiative. I’m in.DETROITPUBLICSCHOOLSAll Detroit Public Schools families:• will receive a letter which confirms the selection for each student in the family andinforms them of the school in which each child is expected to attend in the Fall of 2010.Students must attend the school as indicated on the “Letter of Confirmation” on the firstday of school. Transfer requests will not be honored during the first weeks of school.• are expected to have all students to report to school and attend all classes the first dayof school. The first day of school for the 2010-2011 school year is Tuesday, September7, 2010.• should be advised that attendance agents will be sent to the homes of students who didnot report to class the first day of school. Attendance agents will investigate and reportthe reasons for the student’s absence. Parents/Guardians will be required to re-enrollall students who did not attend school on the first day.• are advised of the following change of address procedure:o All Open Enrollment Parent Centers will be in operation from July 6 – August 31,2010 to process address changesooooooParents/Guardians are asked to visit the Open Enrollment Parent Centers tocomplete change of address forms if your address changes during the summer.Due to a change in address, parents/guardians may elect to change their schoolselections at this time.Parents/Guardians who wish to change school selection due to an address changemust complete a second Open Enrollment Selection CardPlease be advised that the following documentation is required in order to changean address—• State Identification Card (Driver’s License, State issued ID card whichindicates the new address)• Rental Agreement• Purchase Agreement or Purchase Verification• Utility Bill• Automobile Insurance Statement• Official mail or document from a local, state or federal agency thatincludes the new addressIf a new school is selected, that school will be notified and a new student schedulecan be prepared. The student must report to the new school on the first day ofschool to receive the new schedule. The previously selected school will be notifiedof the change.Students may remain in the school in which they enrolled from their previousaddress. The Examination Schools are: Cass Technical High School, RenaissanceHigh School, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School. The Examination Applicationperiod is September 7 – October 11, 2010.The process is open to all Grade 8 residents of the City of Detroit. Applications may beobtained from all Detroit Public Schools middle schools, the Detroit Public Schools WelcomeCenter, all Detroit Public Libraries and the Office of Research, Evaluation, Assessment andAccountability, located at 7430 Second Avenue, Suite 100.Application SchoolsApplication schools require parents to complete an application and selection process beforeenrollment.
