June 28, 2010Dear <strong>Detroit</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> Parents and Guardians:In an effort to give parents and students an opportunity to have the option to enroll in a <strong>Detroit</strong> <strong>Public</strong> School oftheir choice, we are pleased to announce the “<strong>Open</strong> <strong>Enrollment</strong> Initiative.” This initiative will allow students toelect to attend any <strong>Detroit</strong> <strong>Public</strong> School without being required to live within the boundary for that school.Please be advised that the “<strong>Open</strong> <strong>Enrollment</strong> Initiative” does not apply to the Examination High <strong>Schools</strong>, nordoes it apply to the Application <strong>Schools</strong>.The “<strong>Open</strong> <strong>Enrollment</strong> Initiative” registration period is scheduled as follows:• Students Impacted by School Closures: July 6 – 16, 2010• Students Not Impacted by School Closures: July 16 – 23, 2010• Students Receiving Special Education Services: July 6 – August 31, 2010Students may enroll in the school of their interest as long as the school has not reached capacity for theirparticular grade. <strong>Enrollment</strong> preference will be given to students who live within the boundary of a school. Itshould also be noted that transportation will not be provided for students who select a school outside of theboundary of their home school. Transportation is provided for students who attend school within theirhome school boundary and meet the District’s criteria for transportation. All <strong>Detroit</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong>families:• may elect to have their students attend any <strong>Detroit</strong> <strong>Public</strong> School without being requiredto live within that school’s boundary.• may not elect enrollment in examination high schools or application schools during thisinitiative. The process established for entering these schools must be followed.• may enroll their students in the school of their choice as long as the school has not metthe capacity for their particular grade.• must be aware of the fact that transportation will not be provided if they select aschool outside of their home school’s boundary or if the school selection does not meetthe distance criteria for transportation. Students who meet the requirements to receiveDistrict transportation will continue to do so. District policy states that a student mustlive one and one-half miles away from the school within their boundary to qualify fortransportation. Transfer requests will not be honored during the first weeks of school.• are expected to have all students to report to school and attend all classes the first dayof school. The first day of school for the 2010-2011 school year is Tuesday, September7, 2010.• should be advised that attendance agents will be sent to the homes of students who didnot report to class the first day of school. Attendance agents will investigate and reportthe reasons for the student’s absence. The Examination <strong>Schools</strong> are: Cass Technical High School, RenaissanceHigh School, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School. The Examination Applicationperiod is September 7 – October 11, 2010.The process is open to all Grade 8 residents of the City of <strong>Detroit</strong>. Applications may beobtained from all <strong>Detroit</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> middle schools, the <strong>Detroit</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> WelcomeCenter, all <strong>Detroit</strong> <strong>Public</strong> Libraries and the Office of Research, Evaluation, Assessment andAccountability, located at 7430 Second Avenue, Suite 100.Application <strong>Schools</strong>Application schools require parents to complete an application and selection process beforeenrollment.
