Berlin, GermanyFLEXITY BerlinThe testing stage of the four pre-series vehiclesgenerated a highly positive echo in the passengersurveys conducted on the new vehicle type of theBerlin tram. In 2009 the Berlin Transport Authority(BVG) ordered 99 series production vehicles of theBOMBARDIER* FLEXITY* Berlin type. At the end ofJune 2012 an order for another 39 vehicles wasplaced. This now includes 38 long uni-directionalvehicles, 53 short and 47 long bi-directional vehicles.The concept of the FLEXITY Berlin tram was developedtogether by BVG and Bombardier Transportation especiallyfor the German capital. The result is a means of publictransport in cities that are geared to the future, withstepless entrances and easy access for passengers withlimited mobility. The interior is characterized by its generouspassenger space, as well as multifunction compartmentsand air-conditioned passenger areas. The noise levels arelower than that of the trams used up until now.The vehicles have low electricity consumption and feedback electricity into the braking system.The 2.4 metre wide trams offer an ideal utilization of spacein the passenger compartment. Spacious multi-purposeareas provide ample room for prams, wheel-chairs orbicycles.The cityscape of Berlin is characterized by the Bauhausstyle, and so is this tram design which is not only markedby a clear line structure, but also reflects the corporatedesign of BVG and received the international “IF ProductDesign Award 2010” as well as the Universal Design andConsumer Favourite Award 2012.Light Rail Vehicles
