This isillustrated by optimally positionedcontrol elements, the perfectly cutstock, the ergonomic magazineremoval and the Picatinny rail, whichmakes the attachment of a scopesimplicity itself.The highly-praised direct trigger onthe HELIX is finely adjusted at thefactory for a precise shot. It is ideallypositioned directly underneath thebolt handle, and is thus right next tothe bolt action. The dry trigger actiontransforms this hunting gun into aprecision instrument.When designing the stock for theHELIX, MERKEL was inspired by thelegendary Suhl Africa rifles. The straightstock with cheek piece and pistol gripalso gives the linear bolt action a precisecounter-hold. This transforms theHELIX into a fast-action, responsiverifle which sits well in the hand.RAPID BOLT ACTIONKnobel admires how quick and easy Schmider makes it look – one thumb on the manual cocking lever, a shot, then “slish-slash”. One straightpull on the bolt handle before being pushed back into place – the Helix is reloaded. This all takes place inside the system housing – nothingmoves towards the shooter‘s eye. “All he has to do now is hit the target!” says Knobel with a grin.

The bolt action is made twice asfast, which allows more time for aimingand accurate following shots.On the HELIX, the bolt action takesplace inside the system housing – thebolt does not move towards the shooter‘seye. The shooter then keeps theirconcentration, which is a clear advantagewhen rapid following shots can bemade.IMPROVED SHOOTINGAs the pair confront a group of wild boars, Schmider uses this unique ergonomic design of the HELIX to his advantage. Rapid following shotsduring bolt action shooting – only those who are used to something more complicated have to think twice. Schmider now has more time andconcentration for the most important things. In other words, his shooting improves because everything else is easier.
