ISBN: 0802425445. pp.39-77.ULTIMATE CONTENT OF SALVATIONScripture is very clear about this matter. The ultimate object of faith <strong>in</strong> any and every age is GodHimself. The ultimate issue at any time <strong>in</strong> history is whe<strong>the</strong>r a man will take God at His word andexercise faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> provision for salvation which God reveals. The message of Hebrews 11 isaga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>structive, for it repeatedly emphasizes that each hero of faith did what he did because ofhis faith <strong>in</strong> God (cf. Rom. 4:3). Moreover, it is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to note that <strong>the</strong> prophets do not call <strong>the</strong>backslidden people to return to <strong>the</strong> sacrificial system or even to a renewed belief <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> promisesof God. Instead, <strong>the</strong> plea is to return to God (Jer. 3:1, 12, 14, 22; 4:1; Ezek. 33:11; Hos. 12:6;14:1; Joel 2:12 are examples of <strong>the</strong> prevalence of this message <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prophets). 18 Clearly,whatever religious rites, good works, and so on a person might beg<strong>in</strong> or resume, and whateverpromises he might reaffirm, <strong>the</strong> repentant s<strong>in</strong>ner was ultimately turn<strong>in</strong>g or return<strong>in</strong>g to God. In alltimes, He is <strong>the</strong> ultimate object of faith. Even today when we ask men to believe <strong>in</strong> Jesus Christas <strong>the</strong>ir personal savior, we are ask<strong>in</strong>g for an ultimate commitment to God. He is <strong>the</strong> one who has[p.57]revealed that salvation is available through faith <strong>in</strong> Christ. Moreover, a rejection of Christconstitutes a refusal to believe God’s word about Christ; it is a rejection of God Himself.SPECIFIC REVEALED CONTENT OF SALVATIONAll <strong>the</strong> items discussed so far have rema<strong>in</strong>ed constant as <strong>the</strong> dispensations changed. But noteveryth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> regard to salvation is constant. It seems clear that <strong>the</strong> specific revealed content to bebelieved changes at various times <strong>in</strong> history. One may believe that at all times men have believed<strong>in</strong> Jesus of Nazareth, <strong>the</strong> Christ, for salvation. But still he cannot deny that at various times Godhas given more <strong>in</strong>formation than previously specified about that Christ. For <strong>the</strong> one who does nothold that men at all times have consciously known about and believed <strong>in</strong> Jesus, <strong>the</strong> conclusionthat <strong>the</strong> specific revealed content changes is especially clear. There are several key po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong>connection with this matter.First, it is important to remember that s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> each economy <strong>the</strong> content is what God hasrevealed, belief <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> content for that age is belief <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ultimate object of faith, God. Thebeliever is ultimately trust<strong>in</strong>g God when he responds positively to <strong>the</strong> truth for his dispensation:believ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> promises (age of promise), agree<strong>in</strong>g that God will forgive and cleanse <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> of<strong>the</strong> one who <strong>in</strong> faith offers sacrifice (age of law), or plac<strong>in</strong>g his faith and trust <strong>in</strong> Jesus as Savior(age of grace). Thus, it is not, for example, <strong>the</strong> performance of <strong>the</strong> sacrifices or a belief <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>sacrificial system per se that saved someone liv<strong>in</strong>g under <strong>the</strong> Mosaic law. Instead, what saved aperson <strong>the</strong>n was a commitment to <strong>the</strong> God who had revealed that s<strong>in</strong> was to be expiated throughsacrifices made <strong>in</strong> faith that God would give atonement. Therefore, <strong>in</strong> agree<strong>in</strong>g to respondpositively to <strong>the</strong> specific content for any given age, <strong>the</strong> believer was ultimately respond<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>God who revealed <strong>the</strong> content. Romans 4:3, for example, says that Abraham believed God, and itwas counted to him for righteousness. Of course, someone might respond, “He believed <strong>the</strong>
