2009 Composite ScheduleMountat MountMountat MountMountMountat Mount2009 Season OutlookWhile the 2008 season saw the College of Mount St. Joseph Lions slip fromthe lofty heights above the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standingsthat they were used to in recent seasons, the team nonetheless learned somevaluable lessons and gained some good experience going through it.The Mount finished the 2008 season with a 5-5 overall mark, and were3-4 in the HCAC, losing all four conference games by a total of 19 points, including a one-point loss to Anderson University as time expired. The Lionswon the HCAC from 2004-2006 and made the NCAA Playoffs from 2004-2007.Head Coach Rod Huber said while the record last season was not where heor the team wanted it to be, the Mount overcame numerous key injuries andfaced challenges during the season that he hopes will pay off in a big waythis season. Three starters were lost to injury for the year in the team’s 2008opener, and eight players overall, who were either starters or key backups, were lost in the first five weeks of the season.“We had a lot of young kids play last season and they got valuableexperience,’’ says Huber, who enters his 10th season as head coach. “As acoaching staff we figured out what we could and could not do, too.Our offensive and defensive lines grew up as the season advanced. I thinkour coaches did a great job to push the kids through difficult circumstanceswith the close losses we had.”For the Lions to get back to where they have been in the recent past –with the plus .500 records, conference titles and NCAA appearances – Huberbelieves they’ll have to be more consistent in their plays and execution. He isproud, though, of the fact that the Mount has recorded six straight seasons of.500 or better records. The Lions also led the conference last season with only156 points allowed. Franklin, which clinched its second straight HCAC title lastfall, defeated the Mount 40-35.16COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH“A .500 record (5-5) is not acceptable to us,’’ Huber states. “We want anopportunity to make a run at a conference title this season and the kids areexcited about coming back this fall and improving. We think this season’s team has a chance to be in every game, but we’llhave to compete hard on every play and bring our A-game each week.”Coaching StaffThe Lions have a good mix of experienced college coaches and newcomers ontheir staff. Offensively, Vince Suriano, the team’s assistant head coach, returnsfor his third season as the offensive coordinator, while Dick Nocks (OL) andRon Woyan (RB/ST) are also back. Newcomers to the offensive staff are JoelLauer (WR), Eric Doll (TE), and Tim Woyan (Offensive Assistant).“We have a good mix of coaches this season,’’ adds Huber. “They’ve put alot of time into adjusting packages and working with the players. They havesimplified things for the offensive line and have continued to improve whatwe did well last season.Offensively, this is the third year of the true, no-huddle spread offense(under Suriano) and we’ll have few more weapons at running back this fallunder coach (Ron) Woyan. We want to be the top rushing team in the HCAC.All the offensive coaches spent a lot of time in the spring, at training campand in workouts getting things in.”Defensively the Mount will have a new offensive coordinator Brad Phillips.Phillips coached the team’s linebackers last season and will welcome back PatMcAtee (DL), Bob Crable (LB), Rico Hill (Def. Asst), and Kyle Prosser (LB) on thedefensive side. Tony Acito (DL), and Justin Roden (DB/ST) join the staff this fall.“Our defensive coaches did a great job with the players in the off-seasonand it should shows this season,’’ Huber says. “We’ve installed a philosophy ofan attacking defense and moving players around in different formations andlooks to create mismatches.

We’ve challenged our defensive players to be the best run-stop defense inthe conference and be one of the best tackling teams in the HCAC.”The Mount led the conference last fall in pass efficiency defense, totaldefense and pass defense.HCACWhile the conference coaches picked the Lions to finish as runner-ups toFranklin College in the HCAC Preseason Coaches Poll, Huber thinks the race forthe top spot in the HCAC might be wide-open.“We think we have a good chance to compete for a conferencechampionship,’’ Huber states. “Franklin, Anderson and Rose-Hulman all havegood players back, and the ability to compete for a championship. Theconference is competitive and we look forward to the challenge of every teamin our conference. We need to play one game at a time to be successful.”Huber says the team relishes the idea of being the one that will do thechasing this season, as opposed to the past when the Lions were in the topspot the season before and had the onus of upholding that high expectation.RecruitingThe Mount entered fall practice with 135 players in camp and had 121 on theirroster after their August 29 scrimmage. Among the 135 players were 64 newcomers(freshmen and transfers). The team hired Mount alum and former linebacker KyleProsser late in the summer as their first ever recruiting coordinator.“Kyle Prosser will be in charge of every facet of our recruiting, evaluatingplayers through DVD, looking at transcripts,’’ Huber says. “It’s a big plus forus to have someone in that position and we’re excited to have Kyle doing it.He’ll also take over our junior varsity team, which will have at least five gamesagain this coming season.”The coaching staff recruited a large athletic group of newcomers, includingmany at skilled positions, such as running back, defensive back, receiver andlinebacker. That influx of new players has added better team speed and size tothe team’s roster as Huber feels that group will be ready to contribute to thevarsity squad in two years. The Lions’ head coach says while the Mount’s main focus of recruitingwill always be the tri-state area, the team has players on the roster againnationally, with states such as Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New York, andCalifornia represented on the roster.“We want student-athletes from all over the United States to come here togo to school and play because of our facilities and our academic programs,’’Huber states. “We want to win the Greater Cincinnati/Queen City area, andbranch out locally and regionally from there. We’ve once again hit hard areaslike Indianapolis, Dayton, Lexington, Louisville, and Columbus.”Spring FootballThe Lions had over 75 players in the spring football program, and turned in13 workouts in April. Huber said the time allowed Phillips and Suriano to addsome new schemes to the Mount’s play-calling.“The spring practices are big for us,’’ Huber says. “We got a ton ofconditioning in, found some new spots for some players and added some newthings for our offense and defense.Overall, I was pleased with how the spring went, with the attendance, and whatthe players and coaches got done. It allowed us to be ready for fall training practice.”OffenseSuriano says for the team to be more successful this season on offense they’llhave to get back to rushing the ball more effectively, which will keep theoffense out of second and long and third and long play calling.“We’ve tweaked a few things in the running game which we think will helpour offensive line,’’ Suriano states. “We want to rush for at least 2,000 yardsthis season and be more consistent on offense.”While the team’s starting quarterback position is open this fall, and thatcompetition includes returner Patrick Tresey, running backs Jake Davis andNoah Joseph are back to aid a strong rushing attack. Davis, a Second TeamAll-Conference member, led the team with 718 yards and 11 touchdowns, whileJoseph had 235 yards, including 6.0 yards per carry. Fullbacks Rob Domaschkoand Nathan McGee are also back and are key to the run game. While injuries took their toll on the offensive line in 2008, the Mount doesreturn solid core of players who have college experience and are expectedto lead the way this fall. That group in the trenches includes First Team All-Conference honoree Anthony Walsh, Rob Bowman, Kory Bailey, Chris Harrison,Jarod Stolly, Joe Noble, and Nathan Dilts.Jake Watters and Rob Blundred also provide solid blocking at the tight endspot for the Mount and will be viable targets in the passing game.Three of the team’s top four wideouts, Derick Tabar (29 receptions, threeTDs), Brad Sersion and Mike Zies, are back this fall along with Jeremy Brinckand Mike Russell. Steve VonHertsenberg adds depth to a solid receiving group.Tabar was an Honorable Mention All-HCAC selection last fall.“I have taken some plays out and added some plays to our playbook thisseason,’’ Suriano says. “I think our young players will be improved and we’relooking at getting back to where we have been offensively. If we can stayhealthy, we think we’ll do well this season. Our players went through a lot of adversity last season and they’re amentally-tough, close-knit group. We’ve got a lot of solid players who can dosome things this fall.”DefensePhillips says the Lions’ 2009 defense will be a multiple-front formation, runninga base 4-3 front and complemented with odd-man front packages. He and Huberboth expect the team to do more attacking than they have in the recent past.“Our defensive goals this season are for the us to simply be the best defensein the conference and help our offense in obtaining an HCAC Championship,’’Phillips says. “The defense’s individual goals are to lead the conference infewest yards allowed per game, and fewest points allowed.”To strength of the team’s defense this season looks to be in their defensivefront. First Team All-HCAC player Alex Harbin leads that group. Among othersthat return on the defensive line are Rob Fox, Steve Ehrnschwender, BrettHambrick, and Randall Mitchell. Harbin had 50 tackles last season, including ateam-high tying four sacks. The team’s linebackers look solid again in 2009, led by First Team All-HCACmember Erik Prosser and Vince Smith. Maxx Kavish and others also are back inthose spots and look to provide support in the front seven. Prosser is the topreturning tackler this season, after recording 71 stop last season, along withtwo interceptions. In the secondary, the Lions will be led by Cory Hardin, Juan Helvey, andRyan Smithmeyer, Chris Perry, and Mark Grieshop. Depth will be provided byother returners, many of who saw time on the JV squad last fall. Helvey hadtwo interceptions and 29 tackles last season.“This year’s defensive group came out of the hardest training camp in yearsand showed exceptional leadership and talent,’’ Phillips adds. “We have set thebar extremely high for them and we expect great results this year.”Special TeamsThe Lions have their top two placekickers back from last season, Joe Vortkampand Brian Weimer. Vortkamp, who handled the majority of the kickoff duties in2008, attempted only two field goals last season but was four-of-five on extrapoints. Weimer made 24-of-27 extra point attempts and was three-of-five infield goal attempts, giving him 33 points.Vortkamp also handled the team’s punting duties in 2008, averaging 31.5yards per kick, including a long punt of 49 yards. He had seven punts inside theopponent’s 20-yard-line.Tabar was the team’s leading punt returner last fall, averaging 4.1 yards perreturn on a team-high 11 returns. Joseph averaged a team-best 19.7 yards onsix kick returns.2009 FOOTBALL GUIDE 17
