WEDNESDAY NIGHT05.09.2012 P. 05MAKING CROSSINGS SAFERFOR PEDESTRIANS IS COMPLICATEDBy JOHN MICHAEL McGRATHAlong Steeles Avenue inVince Crisanti’s Ward 1(Etobicoke North), cars areregularly found driving at 70,80, even 90 km/h.Where Steeles meetsGihon Spring Drive, pedestrians regularly dartacross the street to catch aTTC bus or visit the longtermcare home on the northside. This is why, this pastMarch, council voted to put acrossing at that intersection, despite objections.“We’ve got ourconstituents to worry about,”says Justin Hane, executiveassistant in Crisanti’s office.“If somebody gets hit bya car, it’s terrible. If theylook back and find out thatthe city’s been trying todecide whether to put astreetlight there or not, we’repotentially in a legal risk.”So with Crisanti’s urging, council voted 32-1 to installa crosswalk that staff (andfiscally conservative Ward3 Councillor Doug Holyday)said wasn’t necessary. Butthis small argument – or theoccasional statistical spikein pedestrian fatalities –raises a broader question inToronto: what makes a safepedestrian street crossing?Unfortunately, the answerseems to be “it depends.”Many of the roads we’vespent the last half-centurymaking safe for drivers aredangerous for pedestrians.According to AndrewFurman, associate professorat Ryerson University, many of our roads weren’tdesigned with human naturein mind.“The worst-case scenariois if you imagine streetfurniture that’s been putthere either accidentally orfor strategic reasons – wastebins, mailboxes, newspaperboxes, any physical objectthat blocks the line ofsight – that’s where a lot ofaccidents are documentedas occurring,” says Furman.“Especially on ... let’s callthem more suburbanportions of the GTA.”Obstructed sightlinesare regularly associatedwith collisions betweenpedestrians and motorists, with right-hand turns beingespecially dangerous. Theother commonly dangerouscrossing is when there’sno crossing at all (as therestill isn’t at Gihon SpringDrive). Since pedestriansare unwilling to walk a halfkilometreto, and then ahalf-kilometre back, from astoplight when all they needto do is cross the road, they’llfrequently jaywalk. But adding a crosswalkisn’t always the solution, either. According to NikoYiannakoulias of McMasterUniversity’s School ofGeography, in some cases, adding signage can actuallymake a crossing moredangerous for pedestrians.“If you’ve got a bigroadway and you add someminor controls, you mayactually increase the numberof collisions on the roadway,”says Yiannakoulias. Thereason, he says, is thatSUBMIT ASTORY SUGGESTION1. Send a story idea to:tonight@openfile.ca2. We assign aprofessional reporter3. Read it next week int.o.night OR online @toronto.openfile.ca/LATEST STORY REQUEST“Is anything being doneabout ticket scalping inToronto?”pedestrians may suddenlystart using a space thatthey’ve never used before.“It’s kind of perverse.”But it’s a balancing act.Too many controlled stopsand drivers will start to avoidthe controls, either runningthrough stop signs or overcongestingother streets, possibly putting pedestrianselsewhere at risk. Both Yiannakoulias andFurman point to someexamples in cities outsideNorth America for moreradical examples of howpedestrians and motoristscan co-exist, such as thewoonerfs of the Netherlands, streets in which pedestriansand cyclists have legalpriority over motorists. Thewoonerfs and other designchanges pioneered by HansMonderman included manymeasures that would seem tomake roads more dangerous– narrowing them, removingsignage – but Monderman’swork suggests it’s safer whenpeople on the streets actuallyhave to negotiate with otherusers instead of relying onthe design of the road.“A lot of signage, symbols, these abstract symbolswe’ve devised to deal withall the needs of peopleusing space, is so abstractthat I do kind of side withMonderman’s thinking,”says Furman. “Maybe notwith the particulars of howhe’s solving each individualproblem, but in general I doagree that we have to designholistically.”Furman would like to seecities find more creativeways to manage pedestriancrossings. “It’s aboutlooking to find a way tomake something wonderfulhappen, where now it’s notso wonderful.”Meanwhile, the peoplewho live and work aroundSteeles Avenue and GihonSpring Drive will continueto wait until later this fall fortheir new crossing.OpenFile.cais community-powered news.Photo by allaboutgeorge via flickrHILL ON SPORTSSAM HILLTDSBINCREASESPERMIT FEESIn a city where the topofficial was elected on aplatform highlighting hisdevotion to youth sportsorganizations, I wasdisappointed to learn thatthe Toronto District SchoolBoard recently sent a letterto all TDSB permit holdersinforming them that it notonly decreased the numberof gym hours available forsubsidized public use, butthat it has reclassified theorganizations entitled tosuch subsidies, with theresult that some will seetheir rates increase – insome cases more than 43%.Under the TDSB’sCommunity Use of Schoolsprogram for 2012, certaingroups may receive asubsidized permit fee ratebased on listed criteria.Scouts, Girl Guides andCadets are included amongthe entitled.Among those not entitled, however, are numerousyouth sports groups. Hewrites songs your parents might enjoy. He takes five years tomake a record, then gives it the groan-inducing title I KnowWhat Love Isn’t.And yet there’s something oddly compelling about hismusic that stifles resentment. I Know What Love Isn’t isgood enough to earn passing comparison to Fleetwood Mac’sRumours and Paul Simon’s Graceland – pinnacles of easylisteningpop. It’s not an instant classic or anything, but whatshould be cloying sounds positively beautiful.MATCHBOX TWENTY: NorthAtlantic, Rating: 2/5While faux-grunge wuss-rock songs are fine enough to humalong to, they rarely work in long form. Like all previousMatchbox records, North wears out its welcome prettyquickly. It’s a shame, given their number of hits, that Matchboxaren’t savvy enough to update their style for today’s popmarket. Like Sugar and, tellingly, the rockabilly-tinged Radioadd a bit of sheen to their sound, but won’t be earning thema second wave of success.

W.The tables fill up fast at this deli on St. Clair’s Corso Italia,so arrive early if you want your pick of the daily specials, and make sure you try the rice ball, which reigns asone of the best in the city.4 COMMISSO BROS.8 KINCORT ST.You’ve got to know where to look for this bakery, withits unbelievably huge steam table selection: you’ll findit off to the side of Caledonia’s home design district.Commisso’s doesn’t bother with the cosmetics (or withseats, really), so you should make sure you know whatyou want from its dizzying selection.7 ZITO’S MARKETPLACE210 MARLEE AVE.Marlee Village, just by the Allen Expressway, is home tothis Italian deli and its adventurous steam table, wherefavourites like eggplant parmigiana share space withspinach frittata and the tripe that the friendly staff recommendwithout hesitation.2 TOMMASO’S TRATTORIA400 EASTERN AVE.Hidden away on Eastern Avenue on the far side of theDon, Tommaso’s boasts some of the city’s best selectionsfrom both a hot and cold table, which can be mixed andmatched. The homemade sausage with deep-fried fennelis a stellar combination.5 FRANCESCA’S BAKERY2 INVERGORDON AVE.In among the car dealerships and auto-parts stores nearScarborough Town Centre, Francesca’s has too muchfood for its steam table, lines that begin before noonand stuffed peppers the size of softballs. In short, it’s amust-try for fans of Italian hot tables.8 AGINCOURT BAKERY3059 PHARMACY AVE.Up by the city’s northern edge, this bakery hidden inthe corner of a strip mall is home to a huge hot tableselection, where you’ll find at least three pastas alongsidealmost a dozen meats and mains, thick muffalettasandwiches and a full salad bar.3 TRE MARI BAKERY1311 ST. CLAIR AVE. W.A Corso Italia institution, Tre Mari is famous for itsbread – but the hot table is open well into the afternoon. The veal, liberated from its typical presentation in asandwich, can be enjoyed with a side of rice and rapini.6 FALLINGBROOK MARKET158 FALLINGBROOK RD.Down by the Bluffs, this relatively new Italian deli isspacious enough for the strolling-pushing mothers whofrequent it, and features a concise hot table featuringtasty, plump gnocchi.9 SANREMO BAKERY374 ROYAL YORK RD.Just by the Mimico GO station, SanRemo’s is a boisterousplace at lunchtime. Here, the crowd spills out on tothe patio tables on Royal York, and the ongoing specialtyis an incredible porchetta available for sandwiches, plates and takeout.GET TO KNOW ATORONTO PATIOBOUTIQUE BAR506 CHURCH ST.647-705-0006Boutique Bar’s patio boasts people-watchingopportunities that are a step above the rest. Theslightly raised patio faces east and is lined withvoyeurs. AUTOWEDNESDAY NIGHT05.09.2012 P. 14DODGE CHALLENGER SRT8TURNS PLENTY OF HEADS470 horsepower, 3 pedals, no B.S.By JUSTIN PRITCHARDDuring a recent week with a DodgeChallenger SRT8, I lived and breathedthe topline, two-door Dodge’s attentiongrabbingpower. The big grey beast from Michigan had 7-yearoldsstopping dead in their tracks, Tim Hortons’staff congregating at the pickup window, and nofewer than a dozen neighbours stopping in tocheck it out during a weekend camping trip.Cruise night at the coffee shop saw a monstrouscrowd form – all with questions and comments. Many more flooded in via Twitter and Facebook.Good thing I like talking cars. So, forget the standard review. Here are theresponses to the most commonly posed questionson the street about the recently revampedChallenger SRT8.Question 1: What’s under the hood?Answer: Chrysler’s new 6.4-litre HEMI SRTV8. It’s got one camshaft, 16 pushrods and an idlelike a stock car. It puts the displacement of a 12-pack of tall-boys, six gears, three pedals and 470horses to work attacking the rear wheels. Revvedup, the whole body torques to the side as if it’s gota sloppy motor mount.Question 2: Can you get an automatic?Answer: Yes – but you’ll lose your man card.Using the pistol grip shifter to bang throughthe gears is an experience unmatched in itsmanliness.Question 3: How’s she go?Answer: Very well indeed. You can feel theextra 45 ponies and increased low-end torquefrom the new, larger SRT engine. Challenger isn’tsmall or light – but it rips like nobody’s businesswhen you give it the boots. You’ll get 0-100 clicksin under five seconds, and run the quarter in wellunder 13.If your radar detector goes off, Brembo brakeswith rotors the size of pizzas stop it in a jiff, too.Note that the Challenger is considerably less funto drive in reverse, because you can see virtuallynothing behind you.Question 4: Is it good on fuel?Answer: Compared to a transport freighter, yes – but romp on it, and it’ll burn through its fuelsupply faster than an orbit-bound rocket-thruster.Mileage on my watch ranged between 12 and22L/100km, with the average landing around 16.Drive like you’ve got a trunk full of potted pansies, and you’ll probably do better. But that’s no fun.Question 5: Big American muscle cars don’thandle, right?Answer: False. As spiritedly as you could pushthis machine on a public road, it’s got heaps ofgrip and stays mostly flat and composed. Big suspensionrevisions this year make the Challengerfeel lighter and more nimble than ever, and ithides its size and weight very well.Question 6: What does it sound like?Answer: If you’ve ever heard Fourth of Julyfireworks and a chaingun simultaneously, you’rein the right ballpark.Question 7: How much?Answer: With an interior upgrade package, manual transmission, high-end infotainment system, big stereo and performance tire add-on, thetester stickered around $53,000.That’s a great deal on obnoxious, all-Americanvelocity – and access to one of the manliest carson the road. The Canadian PressPhotos by Justin Pritchard
