You also can traceroutes.Pinging an IP addressTo verify that a Brocade NetIron XMR and Brocade MLX series router can reach another devicethrough the network, enter the ping command at any level of the CLI.pingSyntax: ping [ | | vrf ] [source ] [count ][timeout ] [ttl ] [size ] [quiet] [numeric] [no-fragment] [verify] [data] [brief]• - Specifies the IP address of the device.• - Specifies the host name.• vrf - Specifies a VPN routing or forwarding instance as the origin of the pingpackets.• source - Specifies an IP address to be used as the origin of the ping packets.• count - Specifies how many ping packets the device sends.• timeout - Specifies how many milliseconds the device waits for a reply from the pingeddevice.• ttl - Specifies the maximum number of hops.• size - Specifies the size of the ICMP data portion of the packet.• quiet - Hides informational messages such as a summary of the ping parameters sent to thedevice and displays only messages indicating the success or failure of the ping.• numeric - Allows the display to list devices by IP address instead of by name.• no-fragment - Turns on the “do not fragment” bit in the IP header of the ping packet.• verify - Verifies that the data in the echo packet (the reply packet) is the same as the data inthe echo request (the ping).• data - Specifies a specific data pattern for the payload instead of the defaultdata pattern.NOTEIf you address the ping to the IP broadcast address, the device lists the first four responses to theping.Tracing a routeTo determine the path through which the router can reach another network device, enter thetraceroute command at any level of the CLI.Brocade MLX Series and Brocade NetIron XMR Diagnostic Guide 5553-1002426-02
