Illustrated 'Autobiography' facing page 211.Dr Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was born at Down Ampney,Gloucestershire, and educated at Charterhouse and Cambridge. Hestudied music at the Royal College of Music and later, briefly, withBruch in Berlin and Ravel in Paris. His first major success was in 1907at the Leeds Festival. For 30 years professor of composition at the RoyalCollege, he was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935.
