It is with great pleasure that I convey my sincerest felicitations to my 

fellow alumni of Torres High School Class ‘66 on the occasion of our Ruby 

Anniversary. 

The time has come for us to be together again. On this occasion, let us 

take the opportunity to look back and renew the special bond that we shared 

during our growing years. I recall quite clearly how eager we were for knowledge 

and how hopeful we were for what the future promised. We were filled with 

great expectations for the life ahead of us. Indeed, we have come a long way 

since then. Torres High School provided us a friendly and safe space in which to 

discover ourselves before we set on life’s path. It helped greatly in laying the 

foundation for our education and character. 

Although we have already ceased being students, the teachings and 

principles of our school will forever be instilled in our hearts and minds, and they 

will always be our source of inspiration. 

As we come together during this celebration, I greet each of you a warm 

welcome. May our reunion be an occasion of happy memories, renewed friendship, 

and stronger ties!

LOOKING BACK 

AFTER FOUR 

DECADES...

Year 1966 was the first term in office 

of President Ferdinand E. Marcos 

after his election on December 30, 

1965. His first year showed a lot of 

promise, building on the relatively robust 

economy. His dream was to make the Philippines 

great again, envisioning a New Society (Bagong 

Lipunan) which would promote peace, harmony 

and progress to its citizens. 

Year 1966 was the year when Torres High 

School celebrated its 40 years of existence. With 

a dynamic team composed of Mr. Cesario 

Bandong as the principal and Mr. Rufino dela 

Cruz as the assistant principal, the school stood 

very prominent among the secondary schools all 

over the country. The school was respected of 

all the Manilans and the rest of the Filipinos 

alike. 

April 29 of the same year, a batch of 

teen-agers graduated from this 

prestigious school. All the speeches in the 

commencement ceremony and the 

written publications of the graduates 

showed a lot of reminiscing the past, 

preparing for the future and enjoying the 

pure exhilaration of being graduates of 

Torres High School. The year’s theme then 

was “Face Reality”. According to the 

graduation message of the principal, Mr. 

Bandong, “It is high time that we face 

reality. We can not always lay the blame 

for the venalities going on around us on 

the administration. If we have the grafters 

and the corruptors, it is because we have 

tolerated them, nay, even encouraged 

them by idolizing the smugglers and the

influence peddlers. Let us face reality and 

change our sense of values”. The group of 

graduates, batch 1966 heard the message 

amidst the sounds of the Beatles and the 

Flippers. They left their school 

enthusiastic to face the real world as 

graduates and as Filipinos with lots of 

hope and a high sense of idealism. 

Year 1985, Ferdinand E. Marcos was still the 

president of the Philippines. Throughout his 20year 

tenure, there were highs and lows. To 

hasten economic development, he implemented 

economic programs which helped the country 

to enjoy the period of economic growth from 

the mid-1970s until the early 1980s. Agriculture 

and industry improved. Tourism rose, also 

contributing to the economy’s growth. The 

remittances of overseas Filipino workers who 

found employment in different parts of the 

world was a major source of economic growth. 

Because of this, the Gross National Product 

rose from Php 55 billion in 1972 to Php 193 

billion in 1980. 

But his second term was marked by 

increasing civil strife known as the “First 

Quarter Storm”. Lawlessness and violence in 

both urban centers and in the country sides 

worsened. As the New People’s Army gained 

strength student activism gained strength. The 

country was in chaos so he had to show more 

strength through the imposition of martial law. 

The Philippine economy suffered a great decline 

after the Aquino assassination in 1983. This 

event also paved the way to the downfall of 

President Marcos. 

The Batch ’66, a group of diverse 

personalities was an array of talents and 

ambitions. But after graduation, the 

history of the batch came to a halt to give 

way to the personal history of each 

alumnus. Each of them had to search their 

reason for being, to find their mission 

here on earth. Some had to go to college 

to pursue their ambition in life but others 

who because of economic reasons had to 

work to be able to live. Almost all of them 

had to experience the joys and the pains 

of life. Some had to start another phase of 

their lives, to find their partners in life and 

to take on responsibilities as heads of 

families. A few had to end their journey 

here on earth and joined the Creator. 

Because of too many preoccupations 

in this “after graduation phase of life”, 

Class ’66 failed to meet as a whole group. 

Some, however, made connections 

because of forced circumstances as 

classmates, co-workers, neighbors, and 

sweet hearts. 

Year 1996, the mid-way of the term of 

another strong national leader who was a 

statesman, President Fidel Ramos. His 

administration centered on the country’s 

economic development. All his efforts were 

focused on helping the Philippines reach the 

status of newly-industrialized country by the 

year 2000. 

This was also the year of a new status 

in the batch history when most of the 

members were everywhere - building, 

leading and making a difference. Many of 

them were already accomplished so they 

had more time to reconnect themselves 

with the past. The effort was initiated by 

two people, Antonio O. Yu and Gloria 

Tolentino-Baysa in a far away province of 

Pangasinan. They both agreed to have a 

reunion. Tony Yu placed an advertisement 

in the newspapers regarding the reunion. 

The feasibility of having a reunion was 

discussed during the first meeting that 

took place on February 25, 1996 at the 

Josephine’s Restaurant in Roxas 

Boulevard. This was attended by the 

proponents, Tony Yu and Glo Tolentino 

Baysa. The following also attended and 

were very enthusiastic about the plan: 

Corazon Castro-Rubio, Hector Fernandez, 

Ariel Rey Juco and Lamberto Trinidad. The 

responsibility of contacting the other 

members of the batch was assigned to 

Bert Trinidad. He asked the assistance of 

Edgardo Santos, in this task of searching 

other members through a house to house 

drive in Gagalangin and other areas in 

Tondo. Ike Robles also gave gasoline 

tickets for the house to house campaign. 

The first meeting to finalize plans for

the grand reunion took place on March 

10, 1996 at the office of Jerry Santiago’s 

office at Project 6, Quezon City. The 

members of the batch who gave their 

time, expertise and other resources to 

make the first grand reunion a reality 

were the following: the original group of 

Cora Rubio, Glo Baysa, Tony Yu, Hector 

Fernandez, Bert Trinidad, Jerry Santiago, 

Ariel Juco and Edgardo Santos. Another 

group of newly - contacted alumni also 

attended the said meeting: Raul Tangco, 

Raul Protacio, Ernesto Gadia, Wilfredo 

Rubio, Alfredo Salvador, Jr., Benjamin 

Domingo, Jr. and Augusto Flores (now 

deceased). The six meetings held after this 

meeting kicked off the first alumni get - 

together. 

The first Grand Reunion of Batch ’66 

was held at the library of Torres High 

School in the afternoon of May 5, 1996. All 

the members of the different committees 

came early as nine in the morning for the 

final arrangement and setting-up of the 

place. Raul Protacio who was still an 

employee of Coca-Cola provided the 

drinks and used a roving van to announce 

the grand reunion in Gagalangin and 

other nearby areas of the school. Navy 

Captain Ariston de los Reyes invited the 

singing group from the Philippine Navy 

for the music from the ’60s. It was a 

memorable and festive affair with a 

record of 178 alumni and several guests. 

Plaques of appreciation were given to 18 

faculty members who attended. The 

crowd was there to reminisce and to 

celebrate. The success of this first grand 

reunion was made possible because of the 

contributions of the following people: 

Jerry Santiago, Herminia Nuque, Gloria 

Baysa, Ike Robles, Ariston delos Reyes, 

Edna Guevara, Oscar Zamora, Honor 

Apolonio, Fely and Catalino Macaraig. 

The grand reunion was very 

memorable and the members of the 

batch would like to have a taste of the 

same experience again. So, there were 

other get-togethers that followed: 

1. The excursion in the training 

grounds of the Philippine Marines 

at Ternate, Cavite that was held 

June 2, 1996 through the 

initiative of Ariston delos Reyes and 

Enrique Robles. 

2. On December 14, 1996, a first 

Christmas Dinner - Dance was held 

at the Philippine Navy Officers’ 

Club at Roxas Boulevard. 

3. Some members of the batch went 

on caroling on December 22, 1996. 

Instead of asking for donations for 

the Christmas Songs that the group 

rendered, a box full of grocery 

items and other gifts were 

distributed to the less fortunate 

members of the batch. 

4. The following year, 1997, another 

Christmas Dinner - Dance was held 

at the Kowloon House at the West 

Avenue, Quezon City. This was 

made possible through the effort of 

a small group of members who had 

series of meetings in the 

COCOFED office of Emily Silloco - 

Abeleda. 

5. Another Christmas Dinner - Dance 

was held at Kowloon House at 

Quezon City on December, 1998. 

These gatherings were a purposeful 

mix of learning and fun. It offered 

opportunities for the members of the 

batch to reconnect and to enjoy each 

other’s company. 

A series of exciting moments in the nation’s 

history happened after the term of President 

Fidel Ramos. All these events - the changing of 

the guards, President Joseph Estrada, then 

President Gloria Macapagal - Arroyo and the 

EDSA People Power 2 promised a better 

Philippines to all its citizens. 

BUT in the history of the batch, the 

emotions were different. Everything was 

quiet after the December, 1998 affair. We

Class ‘66 reunion on December 10, 2005 at Camp Aguinaldo Officers Club. 

rested on what has happened in the 

history of the nation and the history of 

the batch. We reflected on the pluses and 

the minuses of all the reunions. There was 

silence for several years and the batch did 

not meet as a whole group. 

It has been said that there is a time for 

everything and this came into a reality. 

Suddenly like a sleeping giant, the batch 

was able to transcend the concerns of 

everyday life and decided to organize a 

series of meetings that started on May 11, 

2005 at the office of Ariston delos Reyes, 

who was then the Vice Chief of Staff of the 

Armed Forces of the Philippines. It was 

initiated by Serafin Songco who flew from 

California with a request from the 

members of the batch in the States to 

have a grand reunion in celebration of the 

batch’s Ruby Anniversary. In these 

meetings the organizers decided another 

get-together for the batch before the 

grand reunion in the year 2006. 

And so it happened, through the 

efforts of a group headed by Ariston delos 

Reyes, Maria Luisa Villafria-de Castro, 

Edna Guevara, Hector Fernandez, Ariel 

Rey Juco, Oscar Orbeta, Renato Pena, 

Leticia Velasco-Guevara, Corazon Castro- 

Rubio, Jerry Santiago, Edgardo Santos, 

Lamberto Trinidad, the husband and wife 

team of Catalino Macaraig and Felicitas 

Lopez-Macaraig, Antonio Yu and Cita 

Carluen, the following activities were 

undertaken: 

1. The preparation of a Directory for 

all the members of the Batch ’66 

residing in the Philippines and 

abroad. A Iist of the deceased 

members was also included in the 

directory.

members who attended the affair. 

4. The testimonial dinner for Vice 

Chief Ariston delos Reyes held last 

January 28, 2006 at Hyatt Regency 

sponsored by Oscar Orbeta. This 

was attended by only a small group 

of members from the batch. 

5. The participation of a group of 64 

members from Batch ’66 in the

At present everything is being 

prepared for the grand reunion, the 40th 

anniversary of the batch - contacting the 

other alumni here and abroad, organizing 

meetings to prepare the venue and the 

program and soliciting donations for 

other projects. Hopefully the reunion that 

will be held on December 29, 2006 at the 

school grounds of Torres High will not 

only be an opportunity for the batch to 

rejoice, reunite, reminisce and recollect 

but also to help their beloved alma mater 

in its mission of educating the Filipino 

youth. 

It has been said that history is a record of 

past events. The nation’s history is a selective 

interpretation of what occurred in a particular 

period, country and its people. We, as Filipinos 

are all a part of the nation’s history. It is but 

fitting to include the history of Class ’66 as part 

of the nation’s history.

and take pride by the fact 

that we were educated by the most 

prestigious public high school at the time. 

High school life was both fun and 

challenging... great curriculum; competent 

teachers; innovative methods of 

instruction; diverse scholastic, spiritual 

and extra-curricular activities; dynamic 

student-faculty relationship; socio-cultural 

consciousness; students’ participation in 

governance and a lot more opportunities 

for quality secondary education. But in 

the midst of all of these intertwined 

20 factors, there was a common factor that

would bind us together and served as a 

motivation to pursue greater goals: 

poverty 

When we stepped out of the 

premises of THS Compound, we were 

faced with other realities which would 

eventually impact on us as we continue 

our journey after high school. To name a 

few: the country’s politico-military 

environment, the women’s liberation 

movement, the US-USSR cold war, the 

growing Beatlemania fanaticism, the 

Hippies and LSD, advancement in 

technology, etc.—these confluence of 

events and developments helped shaped 

our perspectives and choices in life.

Forty years after and looking back, 

where are we now? To my mind, the last 

forty-year existence was a high-point. It 

was during this period that we had spent 

the prime time of our lives ... when 

opportunities and obstacles came along 

our way that would allow us to harness 

our talent, determination, discipline, 

creativity and potential. It was how we 

responded to these opportunities and 

obstacles that really mattered. By this 

time, most of us are either retired, semiretired 

or about to retire. And this means 

that, we have already created our own 

niche in society, we have already touched 

the lives of many, we have already 

achieved ‘success’ in terms of our abilities, 

finances, relationships, religious/spiritual 

life, health, etc. 

In retrospect, THS prepared and 

equipped us with the basic tools/ 

wherewithal as we entered the university 

of life; the condition obtaining at the time 

made us more aware of our 

responsibilities, accountabilities and rights 

as part of humanity; opportunities and 

obstacles come and go; but... by and large, 

it is really up to us if we want to press 

forward and achieve greater heights in life. 

And as we press forward, there will again 

be rejections. The greater the rejection, 

the greater the direction. Doors will be 

closed, but newer and better doors 

will be opened. We have not gotten 

the best yet in life. 

Life is a journey .... LET’S ROLL!!!
