WHAT IS DECIBELSRECORDS ALL ABOUT?Darebin City Council’s Decibels Records program is ayouth-led initiative for young people interested inpursuing a career within the music industry.The eight-month program provides opportunities forparticipants to gain first hand experience in the variouselements of establishing, maintaining and being signedto an independent record label.As a signed Decibels Records artist, you will get towork with the Decibels Records label committee toproduce, record and promote your own release. Duringthe program you will also be mentored and exposed tonetworking opportunities with key industry figures.The 2013 program will conclude in October with aspecial artist showcase event held at the NorthcoteTown Hall as a part of the Darebin Music Feast.The 2013 Decibels Records program includes:• Studio recording and mixing time at NMIT, Fairfield• A pre-production session of your songs with musicindustry professionals• Once individualised legal advice sessionI think what I’ve gained on apersonal level is a lot moreknowledge about the industryand how it works, andparticularly recording as abusiness... WHAT ARE THEEXPECTATIONS?Being signed to Darebin City Council’s DecibelsRecords program requires a significant level ofcommitment from all participants.As a signed artist, it is expected that you will behave ina professional manner at all times and be focusedtowards developing your musical career and releasingyour product through the Decibels Records program.Participation in the Decibels Records program is free,however some program costs incurred are recoupablethrough artist release sales.Throughout the six-month program, artists (or an artistrepresentative) are expected to attend fortnightlyDecibels Records meetings at Decibels Youth MusicCentre, Northcote. In the lead up to recording,manufacturing deadlines and events, Decibels Recordsartists will also be required to make themselvesavailable for additional promotional and program relatedopportunities (as outlined at Page 3).The 2013 Decibels Records program will be facilitatedby Darebin City Council’s Youth Music DevelopmentOfficer. The Youth Music Development Officer willcoordinate the program and provide relevant resourcesand support to signed Decibels Records artists. AllDecibels Records program decisions will be made inconsultation with the Decibels Records label committeeand Darebin City Council staff.Decibels Records has beensuch a privilege to be a part ofthis year. Working with a groupof passionate individuals hasbeen a rewarding experienceand one that has helped megain a lot of valuableknowledge and networks inthe music industry.(Decibels Records participant, 2012)
