MiscellaneousFrom ourPROVINCE DIRECTORJOHN SECKERAs you know earlier this year Grand Councilappointed a Restructure Commission to identify andevaluate options for international and nationalstructures that would enable the Association to begoverned effectively as an internationalorganization. It was also tasked with identifyingresponsibilities appropriate to any proposed newmodels of governance. The Commission presentedits report to Grand Council when we met inNovember. Much of the November gathering wastaken up with Grand Council both formally andinformally discussing the report and itsrecommendations; our Friday evening dinnerincluded a presentation by and Q&A session withthe Commission’s chairman – Dr. James Hagerty. On the Saturday morning following a generaldiscussion of the report Grand President wentround the table asking each member to succinctlygive his opinion and advise his vote. There wasoverwhelming support amongst Grand Council forwhat the Commission recommended, namely:“That the present form of governance bereplaced with a federal system which willcomprise:_ Circles and Groups_ Elected Provincial Councils_ Elected National/Regional Councils_ An elected International Governing Council “These deliberations are reported in more detail inthe December’s Agenda and the Commission’sreport is being placed on the website should youwish to read it. Grand Council has now asked theCommission to report to it how this decision shouldbe progressed and has asked for that advice to bepresented to our May 2010 meeting. In closing may I wish all Brothers, their families andour widows a safe, happy and Holy Christmas and a2010 which is full of the spirit which animates ourbrotherhoodFraternallyJohnEASTERN LINK NEWSLETTER 3 DECEMBER 20093

From . . .Brother PaulDespogesPresident Province 21The Catenian AssociationCHANGE – The Challenge“Strengthening family life through friendship and faith”Is this the challenge ahead of you as a Catenian? If so, we as an Association must make changes to meet thechallenge. We are now entering into a new era for our Association. The structures, practices and attitudes of the past 100 yearshave served us well; as have the existing Rules and Regulations with the minor amendments made throughout thistime. However, we must now make changes if we and our future Brothers are to build on the good work of our pastBrothers.Under the leadership of Grand President, Brother Joe McNally, the Grand Council has appointed a Commission toreview our Rules and Regulations, independently of the Grand Council. Their findings have been tabled and stage I oftheir recommendations will be advised to Brothers in December. All brothers have been invited to participate in this review through the various documents circulated throughout thisyear, some from Grand Council and others through the Province Councils. The role of Province Councils has also been reviewed, together with the relevant Rules and Regulations. Theresponse to this review by your Provincial Council was actioned by all Councillors through the leadership of therespective office bearers. The review, was not, once again an exercise in pen pushing rather it was one conducted with the Brothers commentsas to how they considered the Association of the future needed to be structured in the review team’s mind.In responding, Provincial Council also took advisement from the Grand Council’s Hinsley Hall strategy workshopfindings, the recommendations from the 2009 Province 21 workshops for Circle Presidents and Membership Officersand the Australian Committee comments.I am pleased to say that, for once, your Association is actioning the membership’s comments. These comments have given expression to an acceptance that the changes that I referred to previously are required. Itis now each and everyone’s’ responsibility to ensure the changes work, not just those relating to structure and practiceat your monthly meeting / dinners, but more importantly, those changes in attitude to our life within our Families andour Catholic Communities.Often we discuss the need to increase membership. Maybe too frequent we do so - without the understanding of thereal importance of sharing the bond of our brotherhood or what value we have to offer to our fellow male Catholic’s intheir family life.Change of attitude to show we wish to share our special bond, coupled with a change to our image within the Catholiccommunity will deliver the result we are all aiming to achieve. But again I stress that nothing can be accomplishedwithout a combined effort i.e., from Grand Council, to Provincial Council, to Circle Councils, to YOU!Finally, it would be remiss of me not to mention a major concern that has unfolded over recent times, the reluctance indisplaying our faith as a Fraternity. The recent Provincial Mass highlighted the urgency required to readdress this reluctance. With less than a 20%attendance of Brothers from our Province, we do need to ask ourselves the questions, are we an Association?“Strengthening family life through friendship and faith”From Denise and me, may we extend to you and your Families a Happy and HolyChristmas and a Healthy New Year.FraternallyPaul Despoges, President Province 214EASTERN LINK NEWSLETTER 4 DECEMBER 2009

THE CATENENIAN ASSOCIATIONINTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTDIRECTORTONY GODDENWrites . . .International DevelopmentIn March 2005 I received a phone call to tell me I was about to be appointed the second everInternational Development Officer for the Catenian Association. As a recently elected Director Iwas surprised particularly since no-one had asked if I was interested in the post and the firstInternational Development Officer, Jim Quinn, was a senior member of Grand Council. I had twoquestions, why, and what budget will I have for International Development? To the first question Idid not receive an answer and to the second question I was told there was no budget forInternational Development and this was not the time to ask for one!!! In answer to “why” I couldonly conclude it was because I am a Welshman who is Director of a Scottish Province andmarried to a lady born in London of Irish parents, but then who knows? My remit was to keep in touch with our Brothers in Africa, Ireland and Malta and to develop inthose countries and elsewhere as and when appropriate. Regarding Australia I was asked toliaise with the Directors of Provinces 20 and 21 and to include updates on Australia in my reportsto Grand Council. It took the Association more than 90 years to appoint its first International Development Officerand the first budget for International Development was not until the Centenary Year in 2008/09.Despite this it has been a wonderful experience as, along with other members of Grand Council, Ihave a vision to make the Association a genuine International one and to spread the Catenianethos throughout the world.I have been privileged to visit our Brothers in Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ireland, Malta andIndia. I have been fortunate in helping develop a new Group and Circle in Malta (St Julians), thefirst Catenian presence in Northern Ireland (Belfast), the first steps towards a new Group inIreland (Kilkenny), and the first ever Circle in India (Panjim) which was inaugurated in October thisyear. We will inaugurate the second Circle in India (Goa Riviera) on 20 February 2010 and I amdelighted Bro John Secker has taken on the role of coordinating efforts to establish theAssociation in New Zealand in 2010.The world is changing and the Catenian Association is changing with it. After the first approach toestablish the Association in Australia it took 52 years before the first Circle was inaugurated, inGoa it took two and a half years and in Northern Ireland just one year. We are currently fieldingrequests to establish the Association in Canada, USA, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Poland, and variousAfrican countries. We are looking at a fairly rapid development of the Association in India withmore Circles to come in Goa, Mumbai and Chennai. India is a fascinating country with 15.5 millionpracticing Catholics and six Indian Cardinals. There are now more Christians than Sikhs in /Cont.5EASTERN LINK NEWSLETTER 5 DECEMBER 2009

Tony Godden Cont . . .India but the Catholics are still a tiny percentage of the overall population. There are largecentres of Catholic population in Goa, Kerala, Mumbai and Chennai with no similarorganisations catering for Catholic men.But to develop further as an International organisation we must adapt our structures and stopoperating on a shoestring. I have long been an advocate of a Federal System for theAssociation and there will be much work to be done to develop this over the next few years. On a personal note I realise my Catenian education is incomplete and, God willing, I lookforward to visiting Province 21 as Grand President in 2011 and to meeting with you and yourfamilies.Tony GoddenInternational Development OfficerTony & Kelly Godden withHis Eminence Cardinal O’Brien, Archbishop of St Andrews and EdinburghAt a recent reception at Stirling CastleEditors Note: Tony Godden became Director of Province 16 (Eastern Scotland) in May 2004, wasappointed International Development Officer in May 2005 and has been Chair of Grand Council’sMembership Work Group since 2007. Guy Cassar writes . . .CATENIANS IN NEWCASTLE – A FOLLOW UP . . .Bishop Michael Malone of Maitland Newcastle Diocese hosted a sumptuous dinner at theNewcastle Club on Tuesday, 15 September 2009. Ten guests were in attendance, whichincluded the Bishop, two deacons, three laymen and four Catenians. A larger number had sent intheir apology for various reasons.Bishop Michael welcomed the guests and informed them that he had organised the dinner tointroduce them to the Catenian Association which he was keen to see established in his Diocese. He said, that after having met with a number of Catenian Executives a couple of months earlierand listened to their presentation he was of the view that the Catenian Association with its motto“Strengthening family life through friendship and faith” would be a welcome addition in hisDiocese.A visual presentation was made with particular emphasis on the Catenians in Australia. Ageographical comparison of the distances between the main cities vis-a-vis what would beexperienced in the UK; Australian population in the main cities and the number of Catholicstherein (not necessarily all practicing; number of current Circles in Eastern Australia; who are theCatenians; where do you find Catenians; the Association aims; qualifications for membership; thetwo Charities that the Association operates globally; what commitment is expected and currentindications of potential new Circles. A photograph of all attendees on the steps of St. Mary’sCathedral, Sydney at the Centenary Mass ended the presentation. What ensued was a heartydiscussion. Interestingly enough what was noted by the guests was that the Association is mainlycomprised of ageing gentlemen! Since the dinner, a septuagenarian guest has declined furtherinvolvement, stating that his age precluded him from any interest in the Association. We have obtained from Bishop Michael’s office a list of the Clergy and their Parishes in theDiocese, together with contact details. This will now enable us to approach the various ParishPriests/Deacons and seek with their blessing to promote the Catenian Association at theweekend masses. The Christmas period would not be a good time to launch our promotion as alarge number of parishioners leave to go on their annual holidays, and Parish Priests aregenerally pretty busy at this time. So the launch may need to be scheduled for some time inFebruary 2010.In the meantime we would very much appreciate it if Brother Catenians with connections in theNewcastle area could advise of potential contacts with details for us to follow up.Bishop Michael did say to us that ‘it won’t be easy’, your prayers will nevertheless prevail.Guy Cassarcassargw@harboursat.com.au(P) (02)6558 8140(F) (02) 6558 814228EASTERN LINK NEWSLETTER 28 DECEMBER 2009

NEWS FROM THE UKLETTER FROM BROTHER PHIL GIDMANPast Grand President andChairman of Centenary Committee18 November 2009Dear Brothers,Centenary Fund/ Centenary CharityAs you know the membership has been consulted on how it felt the surplus remaining in theCentenary Fund should be dispersed: approx £35,000 subject to final audit. This was in accordancewith undertakings I gave right at the start of the process. I am writing to let you know the outcome ofthat consultation and ask you to distribute this letter to all Circle Brothers as quickly as you can.85% of those responding expressed the view that the surplus funds should be used for charitablepurposes, rather than used by the Association or returned to members. Of those 85%, a little overhalf suggested a further donation to the Centenary Charity – Give Water Life and Hope – with theremaining half suggesting almost equally the Association’s own charities: Benevolent and Children’sFund and the Bursary Fund. Responding to these wishes the surplus will be divided 50%, 25% and25%. (See ‘agenda’ with December Catena). The ‘Give Water Life and Hope’ appeal raised £213,175, which has been sent to CAFOD in tranchesas raised so it could start work immediately. A number of projects have already been reported inCatena. To this sum the above 50% split will add approximately a further £17,000 making a grandtotal of about £230,000. (In addition Australian brothers donated $17,959 through Caritas Australia.)As Chairman of the Centenary Committee I congratulate and thank everyone who has contributed tothis amazing sum. Every Province and Circle contributed, plus many individual donations amountingto 927 different sources in the northern hemisphere, plus the contributions in Australia. In myaddress to the Conference in Cardiff 30 months ago I suggested we should leave a lasting legacy ofour centenary. Brothers you have collectively exceeded my wildest dreams. Thank you.We have been looking for a suitably high-profile event at which to mark this achievement and theCentenary of, and the 1200 th consecutive meeting of, London Central 2 on Saturday 12 th Decemberhas been selected in agreement with the circle. On this historic occasion Bro Grand President willhand over a symbolic cheque for the total sum to the Director of CAFOD in the presence of BishopJohn Arnold and the Lord Mayor of Westminster. As every Province and Circle contributed to the appeal it would be a fitting finale if every Provinceand Circle in the UK was represented to participate in the presentation. This is especially so forCircles in Birmingham, the Midlands and the South, all of which can trace their origins back to theestablishment of London Central 2 in 1909. LIFE’S A LAUGH. . . . . . .An elderly Floridian called 911 on her cell phone to report that her car has beenbroken into, she is hysterical as she explains her situation to the dispatcher:'They've stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal and even theaccelerator!' she cried. The dispatcher said, 'Stay calm. An officer is on the way.'A few minutes later, the officer radios in. 'Disregard.' He says. She got in theback-seat by mistake.'As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang.Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, 'Herman, Ijust heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way onInterstate 77. Please be careful!' 'Hell,' said Herman, 'It's not just onecar. It's hundreds of them!'Two elderly women were out driving in a large car - both could barely see over thedashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight wasred, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself 'I must be losing it.. I could havesworn we just went through a red light.' After a few more minutes, they came to anotherintersection and the light was red again.Again, they went right through. The woman in the passenger seat was almost surethat the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She wasgetting nervous at the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they wenton through. So, she turned to the other woman and said, 'Mildred, did you know thatwe just ran through three red lights in a row? You could have killed us both!'Mildred turned to her and said, 'Oh! Am I driving?'An older couple were lying in bed one night. The husband was fallingasleep but the wife was in a romantic mood and wanted to talk. She said:'You used to hold my hand when we were courting.' Wearily he reachedacross, held her hand for a second and tried to get back to sleep. A fewmoments later she said: 'Then you used to kiss me.' Mildly irritated, hereached across, gave her a peck on the cheek and settled down tosleep.Thirty seconds later she said: 'Then you used to bite my Neck.'Angrily, he threw back the bed clothes and got out of bed. 'Where are yougoing?' she asked. 'To get my teeth!'47EASTERN LINK NEWSLETTER 47 DECEMBER 2009
