74WELCOME CENTREUniversity Institutions and Facilities3.13 Society of Friends ofRuhr-Universität Bochum e.V.A vibrant and high-performance university needscreativity, the will to succeed and a supportive environment. The Society of Friends of Ruhr-Universität Bochume.V. (GdF) has set itself the goal of helping to fulfilthese prerequisites. The GdF was born in July 1961 – one day after thegovernment of Nordrhein-Westfalen took the decisionto establish a university in Bochum – in responseto an appeal by a citizen of Bochum in the local press, four years before Ruhr-Universität actually opened itsdoors to the first students. At the time, there was an almost inconceivable senseof purpose and enthusiasm bound up with the firstuniversity in the coal-mining region. It was thanksto this that the new society was able to establish itselfso quickly, registering an incredible almost 3,000members in the first few years.Everyone who was anyone in the region and in manyparts of the federal state wanted to belong. Today, there are five other universities (one of which is theOpen University) in the same catchment area as wellas several universities of applied sciences and, in theimmediate vicinity, one private university – smallwonder that many later split up with their first loveand took up friendly relations with their local institution.Today, GdF has around 1,000 members. On the basis of their subscriptions and substantialdonations, it has been possible for the last forty yearsnot only to promote students and young scientistsand scholars to complete their final papers, projectsand doctorates. Rather, the GdF has also contributedfunding towards conferences, excursions, visitsto foreign universities and guest lectures. RegularGdF funding (some 14,000 euro p.a.) also plays animportant role in the work of the university’s ArtsCentre in all sections: choir and orchestra, visualarts, “Studiobühne” and artistic photography: thatthey have deserved this sponsorship is demonstratedby the many splendid productions, performancesand exhibitions that have been presented to a criticalpublic. (Arts Centre, see chapter 3.10)

3RUHR-UNIVERSITÄT BOCHUM75One of the focus areas of funding is financial supportfor other student activities like boSKop (BochumStudent Culture Cooperative, see chapter 3.10 Art andCulture), for the annual Video Festival and the workof student groups planning and organising theatre, literature and jazz festivals.Every year, GdF awards three prizes (of 1,600 euroeach) for outstanding academic achievements andthe “Gebrüder Deschauer Prize”, valued at 2,600euro. In 2008, a new prize was created for the bestinterdisciplinary doctoral thesis valued at 4,000 euro. The “Wilhelm und Günter Esser-Stiftung”, whichis managed by the GdF, facilitates the promotion ofongoing doctoral projects, usually by providing sixcompletion grants with a basic value of 21,000 euro.Fortunately, the willingness to setup foundations ordonate prizes for academic performance has grown inthe last few years. Many new faculty prizes have beencreated which are held in trust by GdF.Under the GdF umbrella a “University Forum forScience-Business-Industry” has existed for manyyears which organises events at the university andin companies. In the 1990s, GdF made huge efforts to supportthe university with particular investments. It wasinvolved, for example, in financing the House ofNations (accommodation for visiting researchers)and supported the construction of the adjoining “Euroeck”event pavilion. The really major contribution GdF was able to maketo the Ruhr-Universität was a donation of 350,000DM towards financing the large Klais organ in theAudimax. All this would not have been possible without theengagement of many individuals whose membershipfees of 40 euro per year (students 10 euro), individualdonations (in some cases for specific projectsor grants) and endowments are channelled throughthe society for the benefit of the university.Society of Friends of Ruhr-Universität Bochum e.V.Stiepeler Str. 12944801 BochumTel.: 02 34 / 32-2 91 91Mo. – Fr. 9:00 am – 12:30 pmEmail: gdf@rub.dewww.rub.de/freunde
