In <strong>2012</strong>, with thecompletion of the Vedeggio-Cassarate tunnel, the firststep in the organization of the new road network will beachieved; the latter foresees transferring car traffic to aring road that will connect the city with the A2 motorway at<strong>Lugano</strong> Nord exit. The second step foresees the extensionof the ring road to traffic passing through Gandria. Thefulfilment of this project will make it possible to give thecity a whole new set-up, enhancing the lakeshore and theresidential areas. Titolo Capitolo<strong>Lugano</strong>Parco Ciani and Villa CianiThis city park, commonly called Ciani Park, is the greenoasis of more than 60’000 m 2 sloping down to the lake, fullof flower-beds, centuries old and rare trees. It is the locals’and tourists’ favourite place for having a walk enjoyingthe alternating views of the open space of the lake andthe green cover overhead. Villa Ciani is surrounded bythe City Park and represents, with its astounding beauty,one of the most enchanting corners of the gulf of <strong>Lugano</strong>.The name of the Villa and of the park is connected to thebrothers Ciani that rebuilt the villa between 1840 and 1843as it is today. Since 1912, with the expropriation of the City,the villa (Historical Museum) and the park turned into anarea open to the public.Piazza della RiformaPiazza della Riforma, <strong>Lugano</strong>’s main square, is the meetingpoint between the promenade along the lakeside and thebeating heart of the town. As a backdrop to the vivacityof the stalls you can admire the balconies of the buildingsfull of flowers, not least of which is the Civic Building(1845), a prominent element of Lombard neo-classicalstyle. Lake <strong>Lugano</strong> regionMorcoteThe shady arcades, the characteristic little alleys, thewonderful Italian villas, and interesting monuments as wellas luxuriant sub-tropical vegetation all make Morcote thepearl of the Ceresio Region. A very well known touristcentre situated on the lake’s edge, Morcote is one of themost visited places in Ticino and possesses incredibleartistic monuments. It has 404 steps leading up to theimpressive Renaissance Baroque church of “Santa Mariadel Sasso”, considered to be the masterpieces of the Pre-Alps Region. From its terraced cemetery, commandingviews over the Italian part of Lake <strong>Lugano</strong> as well as theMedieval Capitano Tower can be enjoyed.GandriaGandria is a romantic fishing village anchored to the steeplake side at the foot of Monte Brè. It is situated about 5km from <strong>Lugano</strong>. The centre of the village, which is closedto traffic, is comprised of houses, built into the mountainside, which are reached by very steep steps and narrowlanes. Some of the houses date back to the 16 th and 17 thcenturies and are decorated with frescoes and decorativestucco. In the centre of the village can be found the 16 thcentury church San Virgilio, with its sumptuous Baroqueinterior and its tall medieval bell tower. Last, but notleast, Gandria offers wonderful vistas and a surrounding“landscape of dreams”.14discover


Go by boat or by road and embark on a journey of enchanting discovery: thevillages surrounding the lake and the mountains are worth much more than afirst glance. They run peacefully down to the lake and sometimes occupy a moreprecipitous position. Take your time and adapt your rhythm to the situation.CaronaCarona is an ancient and attractive centre, which boastsan impressive heritage of many architects, sculptorsand artists who left the magnificent proof of their artthroughout the village in its decorated churches and villas.The village is extremely well preserved, harmonious, andcharacterised by narrow alleys and small squares. Onecan admire not only richly decorated and stylish houses,but also the 16th century parish church of Saint George,with its sumptuous interior, and the adjacent Town Hall.The latter was built in 1591 and has an elegant five-archedportico, a façade decorated with intriguing trompe l’oeiland the twelve primitive Swiss Cantons’ Arms. In additionto these cultural aspects Carona offers a natural jewel, theSan Grato Botaical Park.Caprino and Cantine di GandriaThe village of Caprino and Cantine di Gandria are ideallysituated above the rugged coastline across the lake from<strong>Lugano</strong>. These small conglomerations look like smalltowns, but in reality, they are comprised only of cellarsthat are perfectly suitable for the conservation of wine andcheese. Nowadays, these places are frequented duringthe day as well as in the evenings. They are an ideal placeto spend some hours enjoying the coolness of the cellars,have a snack or a typical local meal, or rest underneaththe trees while enjoying the view from the terraces abovethe lake. Cantine di Gandria and Caprino can be reachedonly on foot or by boat: this is the secret of such peacefulplaces. Mendrisiotto and Basso CeresioEthnographic Museum of the Muggio ValleyThe Muggio Valley is an area with special features ofhistorical, artistic and ethnographic importance, but theirsignificance is also environmental and naturalistic. Thereare many ethnographic signs of the past in the territory:“nevère” (stone structures filled with snow and usedto preserve milk before it was transformed), “roccoli”(complex systems used to capture migratory birds in nets),“graa” (chestnut roasting structures), “mulini” (mills). TheEthnographic Museum is committed to increasing the valueof this wealth and conserving it by bringing a museum intobeing which is not closed up in a building, but which drawson the elements of cultural and landscape interest to befound in the valley, keeping them in their environmentalcontext. Casa Cantoni, the information centre, encouragesthe visitor to check out and find these objects in the area.Riva San VitaleSituated on the wonderful shore of Lake <strong>Lugano</strong>, atthe wooded feet of Monte San Giorgio “Unesco WorldHeritage”, the village of Riva San Vitale has a very longhistory and a wealth of culture. There will also be a restaurant on thelast floor with a magnificent view on the lake. In the outside,a wide square with 5000 seats capacity will be able to hostoutdoor performances too. The building will also offer a greenpark, where to rest and enjoy a wonderful stay in <strong>Lugano</strong>.
