Athletics Excellence<br />
The Tradition Continues<br />
Men’s and Women’s Soccer<br />
The Mountain Cat soccer team (6-<br />
12-10), under 10-year Head Coach<br />
Eric Kinsey, the team finished sixth in<br />
the West Virginia Intercollegiate<br />
Athletic Conference (WVIAC) with a<br />
4-5-1 mark in conference matches and<br />
advanced to its third consecutive<br />
WVIAC Tournament.<br />
Women’s soccer, under Head Coach<br />
Jim Herlinger, tied for sixth in the<br />
conference with an 8-10 overall<br />
record and a 4-6 conference record.<br />
Men’s and Women’s Basketball<br />
Head Coach Bob Rukavina’s<br />
Mountain Cats men’s basketball team<br />
(17-12, 12-10 WVIAC) placed seventh<br />
in the conference and advanced to the<br />
WVIAC Tournament Quarterfinals.<br />
The Lady Cat basketball team<br />
posted an 15-13, 12-10 WVIAC, ended<br />
the year ninth in the conference and<br />
qualified for the WVIAC Tournament.<br />
Volleyball<br />
Head Coach Linda Renzi’s Lady Cat<br />
volleyball team finished the 11 th in<br />
the final regular season WVIAC<br />
rankings, battled sixth-seed Glenville<br />
State (W.Va.) College in the first<br />
round of the conference tournament,<br />
PITT-<strong>Johnstown</strong><br />
before their season came to an end<br />
after falling in five games. The Lady<br />
Cats finished the season 11-17 overall<br />
and 4-10 in the WVIAC, ranked 14 th in<br />
the nation in blocks per set at 2.34.<br />
Baseball<br />
Head Coach Todd Williams’<br />
baseball team posted a 30-18 and 10-6<br />
in the WVIAC. <strong>Pitt</strong>-<strong>Johnstown</strong> ended<br />
the year ranked ninth in the National<br />
Collegiate Baseball Writers<br />
Association Atlantic Region Poll.<br />
Women’s Track and Field<br />
Jim Herlinger’s women’s track and<br />
field team took sixth place at the<br />
WVIAC Championships in April. At<br />
the meet, the Lady Cat 4x400 relay<br />
team set a school record with a time<br />
of 4:10.03 and finished sixth in the<br />
event.<br />
In cross country, second-year Head<br />
Coach Erin Eaton took the Lady Cats<br />
to two Top-5 finishes.<br />
Golf<br />
On the fairways and greens, the<br />
<strong>Pitt</strong>-<strong>Johnstown</strong> men’s golf team<br />
overcame a mid-season coaching<br />
change to finish 11 th at the WVIAC<br />
<strong>Pitt</strong>-<strong>Johnstown</strong> inducted its third<br />
class into the Athletics Hall of<br />

<strong>Pitt</strong>-<strong>Johnstown</strong>’s 1996 National<br />
Championship Wrestling team,<br />
the first <strong>Pitt</strong>-<strong>Johnstown</strong> team to<br />
win a national championship in<br />
any sport, was also recognized.<br />
Championships in October. Head<br />
Coach Patrick Greer, also led the<br />
Mountain Cats to an impressive four<br />
Top-10 finishes in six events. Under<br />
Greer’s guidance, <strong>Pitt</strong>-<strong>Johnstown</strong> tied<br />
for 10 th at the WVIAC Southern<br />
Regional Tournament.<br />
Wrestling<br />
The Mountain Cats wrapped up the<br />
2008-09 season with a 14-2 dual meet<br />
record. Senior wrestler Shane Valko<br />
handed previously undefeated Cody<br />
Garcia (Nebraska-Omaha) a 6-3 loss<br />
in the title bout to earn the national<br />
title at 133 pounds and became the<br />
Mountain Cats’ 10 th individual<br />
national champion. Valko was also<br />
named National Wrestling Coaches<br />
Association East Region Wrestler of<br />
the Year and NWCA National<br />
Wrestler of the Year. The Mountain<br />
Cats finished 11 th at the national<br />
tournament and had three other<br />
national qualifiers.
