RealWorld Career Services Promotes Grads
“Have You Hired a Pitt-Johnstown
Graduate?” Anyone who has surely
knows the value in doing so! An
extension of our highly successful
“100 Days-100%” initiative, designed
to help new graduates find
employment, the “Have You Hired...?”
campaign was officially kicked off at
the 2010 Showcase for Commerce in
Johnstown.
Led by RealWorld Career Services,
the campaign has been intentionally
designed to build and strengthen
relationships with local and regional
employers to better communicate the
value of hiring a Pitt-Johnstown
graduate. President Spectar
commented, “This is a major priority,
and gets to the heart of how we live
up to our promise to prepare our
students for the real world.”
Enhancing Student Job Placement
Angie Boyd, director of the
RealWorld Career Services office,
explained, “Our graduates have a
combination of excellent academic
preparation and real world
experiences. They are strategic
thinkers who are ready to ignite the
workforce with their energy. The
‘Have You Hired a Pitt-Johnstown
Graduate?’ is one way we can
introduce employers to high-quality
candidates destined to be a part of
their organization’s workforce and
future success.”
The initiative has resulted in the
formation of close working
relationships with several employers
who previously had not considered
Pitt-Johnstown graduates when
recruiting. For the many companies
Pitt-Johnstown’s job placement rate for graduates: 93%
that have already recognized the
value of our graduates, a special
acknowledgment of their support and
commitment was the focus of a fullpage
newspaper advertisement, tied
in to the official launch of the
campaign.
In addition to creating awareness of
the value of hiring our graduates,
“Have You Hired…” also promotes
the services that are available to
assist companies in recruiting new
employees. A special website has
been created for employers at
www.upj.pitt.edu/Hire. The site also
contains profiles of recent graduates
who have either found permanent
employment or have been accepted
into graduate school — further
evidence of the real-world readiness
of our graduates.
Angie added, “Employers are
attracted to a university that
genuinely believes in the value their
graduates bring to an organization
and then works diligently to see them
succeed not only during their time in
college, but as they begin their
careers.” Any Pitt-Johnstown
alumnus is eligible to take advantage
of the placement services and career
guidance offered by the RealWorld
Career Services office. They can be
reached by calling 814-269-7120.
1,785 students took advantage of various programs and services offered through and/or in conjunction with Pitt-
Johnstown’s RealWorld Career Services Office.
Outreach and communication with employers increased by 40% during the Fall Term.
87 workshops were offered to students on the importance of career and professional preparedness.
200 students attended the first-ever Graduation Fair. The event provided a one-stop shopping opportunity for
students to complete graduation-related tasks. The Pitt-Johnstown Alumni Association offered free memberships
to every graduating senior who attended the event.
Senior Week, which was held from March 29 to April 2, provided students with opportunities to attend careerrelated
workshops, engage in mock interviews and resume critiques, and participate in an employer showcase
and job fair.
