Person, in Grammar, is <strong>the</strong> distinction <strong>of</strong>nouns as used in discourse, to denote <strong>the</strong> speaker,<strong>the</strong> person or thing addressed, or <strong>the</strong> person orthing spoken <strong>of</strong>. Hence,<strong>The</strong>re are three persons, called First, Second,and Third.A noun is in <strong>the</strong> first person, when it denotes <strong>the</strong> speakeror writer ;as, Ego ille consul qui verbo ci'ves in exilium ejicio.A noun is in <strong>the</strong> second person, when it denotes <strong>the</strong> personor thing addressed ; as, Catillna, perge quo coepisti.A noun is in <strong>the</strong> third person, when it denotes <strong>the</strong> personor. thing spoken <strong>of</strong>; as,Tempus fugit.Note. Person has nothing to do ei<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a noun, or withits meaning, but simply with <strong>the</strong> manner in which it is used. Hence, <strong>the</strong>same noun may at one time be in <strong>the</strong> first person; at ano<strong>the</strong>r, in <strong>the</strong> secondand at ano<strong>the</strong>r, in <strong>the</strong> third.36.with regard to Sex.2.
