Prosum, andpossum from potis and sum, are very irregular. 221-1, 2.Obs. 2. Instead <strong>of</strong> Essem, forem is sometimes used, and als<strong>of</strong>ore, instead <strong>of</strong>fuisse.Obs. 3. <strong>The</strong> participle ens is not in use, but appears in twocompounds, absens, and pr&sens. Also, <strong>the</strong> supine and gerundare wanting, but <strong>the</strong> inflection in <strong>the</strong> persons and numbers isregular.Note.—<strong>The</strong> great irregularity <strong>of</strong> this verb arises from <strong>the</strong> different partsbeing formed from different <strong>the</strong>mes or roots, viz : <strong>the</strong> parts beginning with efrom eo, <strong>the</strong> root <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greek eijii, and those beginning with/' from fuo, <strong>the</strong>same as <strong>the</strong> Greek 6vw. In ancient times, this verb was conjugated//^,fuere, fui (fuvi ),fiitum. Fuere was contracted fore, and fuerem, forem ;and from futum, was formed futurus. Hence, also, <strong>the</strong> ancient formsfuverim, fuvero, &c.188.—§ 55. EXERCISES ON THE VERB SUM.1.
