2/3<strong>CHP</strong> units for heat <strong>and</strong> powerTailor-made energy concepts for the provision of heat <strong>and</strong> power.<strong>Combined</strong> heat <strong>and</strong> power modules(<strong>CHP</strong> modules) are compact energygeneration units that provide a de-centralised(local) supply of heat <strong>and</strong> power with aconsumer focus at an overall efficiency ofaround 90 %. Compared with a separateenergy supply with power from a condensingpower plant <strong>and</strong> heat from a boiler, primaryenergy savings of well over 30 % can beachieved. This is also linked to acorresponding reduction in pollution.Depending on the fuel comparison, thismeans the emission of up to 25 % lessnitrogen oxide (acid rain) <strong>and</strong> around 60%less carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas).<strong>CHP</strong> modules are primarily used to coverthe heating base load <strong>and</strong> are complementedby peak load boilers. The generated power isused to cover own dem<strong>and</strong>, whenever thisis economical. However, in principle, acombined heat <strong>and</strong> power module meansthat there should be no power generationwithout heat consumption. And withoutpower generation, there is no amortisationof investment <strong>and</strong> operating costs, whichwould therefore not be economical. Theparallel generation of heat <strong>and</strong> powerrequires a simultaneous consumption ofheat <strong>and</strong> power.An internal combustion engine is suppliedwith natural gas <strong>and</strong> combustion air from theinstallation room. This energy is convertedinto mechanical energy by the engine.A synchronous generator is powered via thecoupling. This generates 400 V <strong>and</strong> 50 Hzthree-phase current.Via the integral control system, the generatedcurrent is routed in accordance with therelevant protection regulations to the on-sitemain distribution board. The waste heat fromthe engine oil, the engine coolant <strong>and</strong> theexhaust gas, is collected in the "internalcooling circuit" <strong>and</strong> made available to theheating system at a flow temperature of up to90 °C.At the core of the <strong>CHP</strong> unitlies the gas engine.<strong>CHP</strong> units for the combined generation of heat <strong>and</strong> powerwith an output range from 5 to 401 kW el

4/5When <strong>and</strong> where is the use of<strong>CHP</strong> beneficial?The use of energy efficient engines makes <strong>CHP</strong> a powerful <strong>and</strong> high efficiency unit.<strong>CHP</strong> unit viabilityWith the st<strong>and</strong>ard manufacture of <strong>CHP</strong> unitspowered by natural gas or biogas, <strong>Viessmann</strong>extends its comprehensive product range forapplications requiring a medium output inmunicipal buildings <strong>and</strong> industrial <strong>and</strong>commercial enterprises. The utilisation of this heat, e.g. forheating buildings, reduces heat losses <strong>and</strong>lowers emissions that are damaging to theenvironment. <strong>Combined</strong> heat <strong>and</strong> powergeneration enables up to 36% of primaryenergy to be saved <strong>and</strong> is therefore one ofthe most efficient energy-saving methodsavailable today.
