CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVICESThe M<strong>in</strong>istry of Children and Youth <strong>Service</strong>s offers a number of services and programs for childrenand families <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:Child Protection (ensur<strong>in</strong>g children <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> are safe and protected from abuse or neglect);Adoption <strong>Service</strong>s;Child Care Programs (licens<strong>in</strong>g of day care centers, f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance to low <strong>in</strong>come parents access<strong>in</strong>gday care);Prevention of Family Violence and Bully<strong>in</strong>g (fund<strong>in</strong>g of women’s shelters, <strong>in</strong>formation on family violenceand bully<strong>in</strong>g issues);<strong>Service</strong>s for Children with Disabilities (assistance for parents rais<strong>in</strong>g a child who has a disability);Early Intervention Programs.Ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>Government</strong> directly deliver<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se programs, <strong>the</strong>re are 10 Child and Family <strong>Service</strong>sAuthorities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> that offer <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>Alberta</strong>ns. Each of <strong>the</strong>se Authorities has a board with members fromwith<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. They design programs <strong>in</strong> ways that best meet <strong>the</strong> needs of <strong>the</strong>ir region. TheAuthorities must meet specific standards <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y operate.
