SOLICITOR GENERAL AND PUBLIC SECURITYThe M<strong>in</strong>istry of Solicitor General and Public Security works <strong>in</strong> partnership with <strong>Alberta</strong>ns to provide safe andsecure communities through effective crime prevention, polic<strong>in</strong>g, prov<strong>in</strong>cial security, correctional services andsupport to victims of crime. The M<strong>in</strong>istry works with stakeholders to ensure that gam<strong>in</strong>g and liquor activitiesare conducted effectively and with <strong>in</strong>tegrity, and <strong>in</strong> a socially responsible manner.Areas of Responsibility & <strong>Key</strong> ProgramsThe Department's key responsibilities <strong>in</strong>clude: Law Enforcement and Crime Prevention - Ensur<strong>in</strong>g safe communities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> by coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g andensur<strong>in</strong>g adequate and effective polic<strong>in</strong>g, target<strong>in</strong>g organized crime, support<strong>in</strong>g police through <strong>the</strong>Sheriff program, produc<strong>in</strong>g enhanced <strong>in</strong>formation services with polic<strong>in</strong>g partners, and develop<strong>in</strong>g andpromot<strong>in</strong>g crime prevention programs. Custody, Supervision and Rehabilitative Opportunities for Offenders - Ensur<strong>in</strong>g effective and efficientsecurity and supervision of offenders that enhances public safety while offer<strong>in</strong>g offendersopportunities to become law-abid<strong>in</strong>g citizens. Protection <strong>Service</strong>s for Officials, Facilities and Infrastructure – Ensur<strong>in</strong>g officials and <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>in</strong><strong>Alberta</strong> are safe and secure by provid<strong>in</strong>g security for government officials, property and operations,and by work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ation with all levels of government and o<strong>the</strong>r stakeholders on counterterrorism,<strong>in</strong>telligence and crisis management plann<strong>in</strong>g. Victims Programs and <strong>Service</strong>s - Ensur<strong>in</strong>g victims are treated with dignity and respect and that <strong>the</strong>yreceive <strong>in</strong>formation about programs and services, assistance dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> crim<strong>in</strong>al justice process, andthat eligible victims promptly receive f<strong>in</strong>ancial benefits.The M<strong>in</strong>istry consists of <strong>the</strong> department and <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g entities:.Law Enforcement Review Board - an <strong>in</strong>dependent quasi-judicial body established under <strong>the</strong> PoliceAct. It hears appeals from citizens who have filed a compla<strong>in</strong>t regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> actions of a police officer,and are not satisfied with <strong>the</strong> disposition of <strong>the</strong>ir compla<strong>in</strong>t.Victims of Crime Program Committee - appo<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ister to make recommendations on grantapplications and to provide <strong>in</strong>formation with respect to programs and services that assist victims.Crim<strong>in</strong>al Injuries Review Board - considers requests for reviews concern<strong>in</strong>g decisions on applicationsfor f<strong>in</strong>ancial benefits under <strong>the</strong> Victims of Crime Act.The <strong>Alberta</strong> Gam<strong>in</strong>g and Liquor Commission (AGLC) is an agent of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Government</strong> of <strong>Alberta</strong> andconsists of a Board and a Corporation. The AGLC is responsible for regulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Alberta</strong>’s charitablegam<strong>in</strong>g activities and for conduct<strong>in</strong>g and manag<strong>in</strong>g prov<strong>in</strong>cial gam<strong>in</strong>g activities. It also controls <strong>the</strong>manufacture, importation, sale, purchase, possession, storage, transportation, use and consumptionof liquor <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong>.Updated April 23, 2013 28
