ENERGYEnergy is <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>Alberta</strong>’s economy. <strong>Alberta</strong>ns own <strong>the</strong> oil, natural gas and o<strong>the</strong>r m<strong>in</strong>eral resources.The energy <strong>in</strong>dustry accounts for approximately one-third of all <strong>Alberta</strong> government revenue, ensur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ongo<strong>in</strong>g delivery of critical public programs, such as health, education and <strong>in</strong>frastructure. Energy alsoaccounts for just over half of <strong>the</strong> value of <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce’s total exports and about one-quarter of <strong>the</strong>prov<strong>in</strong>ce’s Gross Domestic Product. The energy sector employs – directly and <strong>in</strong>directly – nearly one <strong>in</strong>every six workers <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong>.The M<strong>in</strong>istry of Energy consists of <strong>the</strong> Department of Energy, <strong>the</strong> Energy Resources Conservation Board(ERCB) and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> Utilities Commission (AUC).The Department oversees a diverse range of portfolios that <strong>in</strong>cludes natural gas, conventional oil, oil sands,petrochemicals, pipel<strong>in</strong>es, electricity, coal and m<strong>in</strong>erals. The department works with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce’sframework of susta<strong>in</strong>able development to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> or enhance resource exploration and developmentopportunities by:Ensur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Alberta</strong>’s energy and m<strong>in</strong>eral resources rema<strong>in</strong> competitive, and attractive to<strong>in</strong>vestment and development;Inform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Alberta</strong>ns about energy and m<strong>in</strong>eral resource development and related policies, and <strong>the</strong>significance of <strong>the</strong>se resources to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> economy; andProvid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Alberta</strong> consumers with a choice of reliable and competitively priced energy.The ERCB regulates <strong>the</strong> safe, responsible, and efficient development of <strong>Alberta</strong>'s energy resources: oil,natural gas, oil sands, coal, and electrical energy; and <strong>the</strong> pipel<strong>in</strong>es and transmission l<strong>in</strong>es to move <strong>the</strong>resources to market.
