-42-CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL ANALYSE SChemical and Physical analyses were carried out according to th eroutine procedures used by the Alberta Institute of Pedology (Canada Soil Surve yCommittee 1976c) . These involved a determination of :Soil Reaction ; pH was determined with a pH meter usinga 2 :1 0 .01 M CaCI 2 solution to soil ratio (Peech 1965) .Total Nitrogen; determined by the macro Kjeldahl-Wilforth -Gunning method (A .O .A .C . 1955) . A mixture of HgO ,CuSO4, and K2SO4 (Kelpak) was used as a catalyst .Calcium Carbonate Equivalent : inorganic carbon manometri cmethod of Boscombe (1961) .Organic Carbon; by difference between total carbon andinorganic carbon . Total carbon was determined by dry combustionusing an induction furnace (Allison, et al . 1965) wit ha gasometric detection of evolved CO 2 (Leco model 577-100) .Cation Exchange Capacity; by displacement of ammoniu mwith sodium chloride (Chapman 1965) .Exchangeable Cations; extraction by Neutral N NH4OAC(A .O .A .C . 1955) with K, Mg, Na and Ca determined b yatomic absorption spectrophotometry .Sodium Pyrophosphate Extractable Iron and Aluminum b yMcKeague (1967) method . The determination of Fe and Al wasdone by Atomic absorption spectroscopy .Particle Size Distribution; by the pipette method of Kilme rand Alexander (1949) as modified by Toogood and Peters (1953) .Liquid limit, Plastic limit, and Plasticity Index; by th emethod outlined by ASTM (1970) .One-third and fifteen Bar Moisture ; by the pressure plat eand pressure membrane methods (U .S . Salinity Laborator yStaff 1954) .
