-23-VEGETATIO NGeneral Vegetation Patter nAn extensive study of the vegetation throughout Yoho National Park ha sbeen conducted by Kuchar (1976) . He reported that about 50% of the Park wa scovered by coniferous forest . Bare rock, mostly above timerline, occupied anothe r30% . Glaciers, ice and snow covered another 10% leaving only about 10% of th ePark covered by non-forest vegetation .Lodgepole pine and spruce forests were the most widespread vegetativ etypes . Douglas fir, whitebark pine and subalpine fir and/or subalpine larch forest swere less common . Western red cedar forests were of rare occurrence, generally i nthe western portion of the Park . Herb meadows and scrub were identified by Kucha r(1976) as the only important non-forest vegetation types, and occurred mainly i nwetland areas, on snow avalanche slopes and in alpine sites .Many stages of plant succession occur in the Park . Recent deglaciation,fires, slope instability and shifting patterns of alluvial deposition as well as huma nimpacts, all result in vegetation disturbance or destruction . The predominance o fLodgepole pine throughout the Park indicates the large extent to which vegetatio nsuccession has been interrupted .Vegetation Zonatio nThe traditional system of ecological zonation in the Canadian Rockies include smontane, subalpine and alpine zones (Daubenmire 1943 , Heusser 1956 and Bell 1966) .As Kuchar (1976) pointed out, agreement was not unanimous as to the elevation a twhich the transitions occur . He feels that themontane -subalpine transition occurre dat about 1,600 m a .s .I . which was in good agreement with the elevation where amajor soil transition occurred from dominantly Brunisolic soils to soils with a transitiona lBrunisolic - Podzolic character respectively . Vegetation such as roughleaf ricegrass ,Douglas fir and trembling aspen rarely occur above the 1,600 m a .s .I . elevation .Natural timberline in Yoho occurs at about 2,100 m a .s .l . but there is som edisagreement in the literature (Love 1970) as to what constitutes alpine vs . subalpine .
