-4-The first mineral claim was made on Mount Stephen in 1884 by Tom Wilso nand led to the establishment of the East Monarch Mine . Many claims followed i nthe surrounding area, but few of them proved to be productive . The mining activitycentered around Mount Stephen, the Ottertail River and Upper Ice River . The onlyproductive mines however, were the East and West Monarch Mines in Mount Stephe nand the Kicking Horse Mine in Mount Field . Mining continued until 1952 . This was followed by the EmeraldLake Chalet in 1901 and the Wapta Lake Lodge, Yoho Valley Lodge and Lake O'HaraLodge in 1920's . As well as these, several tea houses and rest houses were constructe dby C .P.R . for hikers . During the 1950's, most of the C .P .R . owned lodges, te ahouses, and rest house were sold or torn down so that at the present time, none of th etourist accommodation facilities in the Yoho are owned by the C .P .R . The AlpineClub of Canada also built and still maintains huts in the O'Hara Meadows and Littl eYoho Valley areas .The first roads in Yoho were wagon roads built by mining and lumberin gcompanies in the late 1800's . Automobiles were first permitted in Yoho in 1919 an dthe road to Lake Louise was completed in 1926 . By 1938 a first class highway ra nthrough Yoho . The Trans Canada Highway through Yoho was completed in 1958 .With the coming of automobiles, even more people were passing throug hYoho, so campgrounds were set up to accommodate them . The first campground wa sbuilt on the outskirts of Field in 1925 . This was soon followed by the popular Kickin gHorse campground . Today there are five campgrounds including the Kicking Horsecampground, Takakkaw Falls campground, Hoodoo Creek campground, Chancellor Pea kcampground, and Lake O'Hara campground .
