-155-Table 59 . Guides for assessing soil limitations for camp areas .This guide applies to soils to be used intensively for tents and camp trailers and the accompanying activities of outdoo rliving . It is assumed that little site preparation will be done other than shaping and levelling for campsites and parkin gareas . The soil should be suitable for heavy foot traffic by humans and limited vehicular traffic . l Soil suitability forgrowing and maintaining vegetation is not a part of this guide, but is an important item to consider in the final evaluatio nof site .Back country campsites differ in design, setting and management but require similar soil attributes . These guides shouldapply to evaluations for back country campsites but depending on the nature of the facility the interpreter may wish to adjus tthe criteria defining a given degree of limitation to reflect the changed requirement . For example, small tentsites may allowRock exposures greater than 10 m apart to be considered a slight limitation .ItemsAffectin gUseWetness (Wet) 2Flooding (Flood)Permeability 3(Perm)Degree of LimitationNone to Slight ModerateSevere Very Sever eVery rapidly, rapidly ,well and moderatelywell drained soil swith no seepage orponding . The abbreviations in brackets are used in Table 67 to indicate the nature of the limitation .3 : Infiltration tests show that in most, if not all, of the soils found in Yoho there is little if any limitation i npermeability with regard to camp areas (Appendix C) .4. Surface soil texture influences soil ratings as it affects foot trafficability, dust, and soil permeability .5. Coarse fragments for the purpose of this table include gravels and cobbles . Stones are evaluated by stoniness .6. Some gravelly soils may be rated as having slight limitations if the content of gravel exceeds 20% by only a smal lmargin, providing (a) the gravel is embedded in the soil matrix, or (b) the fragments are less than 2 cm in size . Se ethe definition for gravels in the System of Soil Classification for Canada (Canada Soil Survey Committee, 1974) pp . 219 .7. Very shallow soils are rated as having a limitation for rockiness and/or stoniness . See also definitions of rockiness andstoniness in the System of Soil Classification for Canada (Canada Soil Survey Committee, 1974) pp . 217-219 .
