-149- -PART I VINTERPRETATIONS OF <strong>SOIL</strong>S FOR SELECTED PARKS USE SINTRODUCTIO NSoils are one of the basic resources which have to be considered when plannin gland use activities . The proper use and management of soil resources is required t oaccommodate user facilities and activities at minimal cost, both in terms of constructio nand maintenance, and in terms of the amount of environmental impact . Soils vary i nthe nature and the degree of limitations for recreational uses . Some soils may be wel lsuited for a number of uses, while other soils may have moderate or severe limitation sfor one or more uses . A knowledge of soil characteristics is basic to good planning an dmanagement .Part IV of this report provides predictions of soil performance based on fiel dobservations and laboratory data, as well as past experience and published information .These predictions are intended only to serve as guides for planners and managers . Theyare not intended as recommendations for land use .The cirteria used to evaluate the kind and degree of limitations were largel yadapted for unpublished guides used by the United States Department of Agriculture ,Soil Conservation Service . Similar guides may be found in Montgomery and Edminste r(1966), Soil Conservation Guide (1967), Knapik and Coen (1974), Coen and Hollan d(1976), Greenlee (1976) and Epp (1977) .IMPLICATIONS OF <strong>SOIL</strong> PROPERTIES FOR RECREATIONAL LAND USE PLANNIN GThe following are some of the basic soil properties that singly-or in combinatio nwith others commonly affect recreational land use .
