Bailey and Martin: female same-sex orientationA scientific study set out to determine a genetic basis for same sex femaleorientation was conducted by Northwestern University professor MichaelBailey and Australian geneticist, Nicholas Martin. They concluded:Female sexual orientation is more a matter of environment thanheredity. We would say our research did not find evidence thatfemale sexual orientation has a genetic basis. (Bailey et al.1993).Thus far, this paper has demonstrated two components in the complex issue ofhomosexuality: First, this researcher identified the ancient practices andhistory of homosexuality. Second, relevant empirical scientific reports wereanalysed as to the validity of the scientific community’s assertions that therecould be a biologic or genetic determinism for homosexuality. Documentedquotes by the scientists themselves lend validity to the basis that indeed, agene has not been discovered to confirm that homosexual behaviour has apathological basis. Let us now turn our attention to another very salient anddivisive issue among the behavioural scientists: Is it possible for homosexualsto change their behaviour and live productive and rewarding heterosexuallives?3.5.
