Psychologist Allen Bergin(2002:206) concurs:F<strong>or</strong> sexual expression to nurture relationships, . . . it must beguided by spiritual principles. Behaviour outside theseprinciples puts at risk our ability to attain the highest joys ofsexual expression. Such principles come from our Creat<strong>or</strong>.Theref<strong>or</strong>e, free agency is the ability to grasp the true reality of our sexualnatures and the conscious, deliberate choice to fulfil our true roles asheterosexual beings. The individual is considered able (in most situations—apart from extreme mental handicaps) to alter his/her thinking, emotions, andbehaviour to live in harmony with revealed truth (Abbott 1995).Glock (2004) cogently summarises the impact of free will upon theengagement in same sex relationships:Scientists effectively ign<strong>or</strong>e free will as a possible causal agent.This is not because scientists do not believe in a free will.Certainly in their everyday lives they think and act as if freewill exists. When they function as scientists, however, theyhave not found means to establish if free will may be operativeas a determinate of human behavi<strong>or</strong>.While science gives no credence to free will as a possible contribut<strong>or</strong> tobehaviour, neither does science offer proof of its non-existence (Glock 2004).Both environmental fact<strong>or</strong>s which predispose one to homosexuality andfreedom of choice must be considered as fact<strong>or</strong>s contributing to the causationof homosexuality.Is there a natural <strong>or</strong>ientation toward same sex behaviour <strong>or</strong> is it clearly achosen behaviour?3.3.
