Based <strong>on</strong> findings in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ecstasy</strong> accident investigati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>Coast Guard, <strong>on</strong> May 21, 2000, amended its Marine Safety Manual, Volume II, adding <strong>the</strong>following informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> laundry room exhaust ducts and requiring inspectors to examinethose ducts for potential safety problems (amendments italicized).Galley and Laundry Room Exhaust Ducts: A number of shipboard fires haveoriginated in <strong>the</strong> exhaust ducts of galley ranges and fryers, and recently in laundryroom ventilati<strong>on</strong> systems. These fires have resulted in serious damage, injury, andloss of life aboard <strong>the</strong> vessels involved. Unmaintained exhaust duct work willbecome saturated with cooking grease and pose a fire hazard. Unfortunately, suchareas have been overlooked during vessel inspecti<strong>on</strong>s. The following proceduresshall be followed during biennial and mid-period inspecti<strong>on</strong>s of U.S. vessels andduring SOLAS verificati<strong>on</strong> examinati<strong>on</strong>s of foreign vessels:All vessels: a. (6) Examine laundry room vents, ask if <strong>the</strong> company has a cleaningand maintenance program (check records–part of ISM/SMS resp<strong>on</strong>sibility). 42Postaccident findings.
