On <strong>the</strong> day of <strong>the</strong> accident, <strong>the</strong> fire alarm panel <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> bridge indicated that <strong>the</strong> first alarmactivated in <strong>the</strong> main laundry <strong>on</strong> deck No. 2. The ventilati<strong>on</strong> system for <strong>the</strong> laundry penetrated a mainvertical z<strong>on</strong>e (MVZ) and exhausted <strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong> mooring deck. O<strong>the</strong>r early fire alarms indicated thatdetectors activated in <strong>the</strong> stern thruster room, <strong>the</strong> air c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ing plenum between decks No. 4 and6, an electrical room above <strong>the</strong> mooring deck, and both steering gear rooms below <strong>the</strong> mooring deck.inclement wea<strong>the</strong>r arrived. After <strong>the</strong> muster drill was completed, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ecstasy</strong> departed <strong>the</strong>Port of <strong>Miami</strong> with 2,565 passengers and 916 crewmembers <strong>on</strong> board.After <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ecstasy</strong> departed its berth, crewmembers brought in and stowed <strong>the</strong>syn<strong>the</strong>tic mooring lines <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> aft mooring stati<strong>on</strong>, which was <strong>on</strong> deck No. 4. A bosun dida final inspecti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> area and secured <strong>the</strong> two wea<strong>the</strong>r-tight doors leading from <strong>the</strong>mooring stati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> passenger stateroom area <strong>on</strong> deck No. 4. He <strong>the</strong>n exited <strong>the</strong> areausing <strong>the</strong> center crew stairway. According to <strong>the</strong> bosun, <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r door to this crewstairway was always left open. The mooring stati<strong>on</strong> log indicates that <strong>the</strong> mooring deckwas “all clear” and secured at 1650, meaning no machinery was in operati<strong>on</strong> and nopeople were in <strong>the</strong> area. The bosun stated that he noted nothing unusual <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> deck whenhe left.
