Androscoggin HolsteinsOver the last 42 years I have taken great pride in seeing Androscoggin HolsteinsBAA slowly go from 102% to as high as 111.3% on a predominately homebredherd by focusing on 2 things: very careful matings, and very intensive individualcow management.Our cows go over 1/4 of a mile thru rough terrain just to get to some pastures;breeding for and care of their feet and legs has always been a priority. It hasbeen so wet this year in Maine that feed quality has suffered- I believe these cowswill all milk more on your feeding program then ours.Mentally it feels like its going to kill me to sell the herd, but health issues forSandy and I, and a change in Maine’s dairy support program emphasis make thedecision to sell and move into semi-retirement a correct one.It has been gratifying to see some All-Canadian nominations and our 1st All-American Nomination last year.
