35. Infanterie-Division (35th Infantry Division) 75The 35. Infanterie-Division (l. Welle) was formed during theexpansion of the Army after the introduction of universal militaryservice in March 1935. In May 194-0 it fought in Holland,Belgium, and France. The division was transferred to East Prussiain April 1941 in preparation for the campaign against Russia,and fought in the central sector in the encirclement of Smolensk,at Vyazma, and to the Istra River northwest of Moscow. It sufferedheavy losses in the winters of 1941-42 and 1942-43 in theVyazma and Gzhatsk areas and in the summer of 1943 near DorogobuzhItemon the Dnieper River front. Although no records of this divisiondated later than June 30, 1943, are available, situation maps ofLage Ost show that it participated in the defense of the Smolenskarea in September and October 1943, the Chausy area in Novemberand December, and the area between Mozyr and Bobruisk from Januaryto June 1944.
