30 25. Panzergrenadier-Division (25th Panzer Grenadier Division)Formed in 1934-35 as the 25. Infanterie-Division (l* Welle) by expansionof Infanterie-Regiment 13 of the old Reichswehr, this divisionparticip<strong>at</strong>ed in the campaign against Poland in September andOc<strong>to</strong>ber 1939, transferred <strong>to</strong> the German-Luxembourg border for thewestern campaign in May 194-0, and in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 194-0 from the demarc<strong>at</strong>ionline in France back <strong>to</strong> its home st<strong>at</strong>ion in Ludwigsburg, WehrkreisV. Reorganized as a mo<strong>to</strong>rized infantry division on November1, 1940, in June 194-1 it vent <strong>to</strong> Poland for the <strong>at</strong>tack on Russia,crossing the border in the central sec<strong>to</strong>r, advancing from Rovnosoutheast <strong>to</strong> Zaporozhe, then taking part in the encirclement ofKiev, the advance <strong>to</strong> Orel, and position defense on the Oka andZusha Rivers, where it suffered heavy losses during the winter of194-2 and spring of 1943. The division was redesign<strong>at</strong>ed the 25.Panzergrenadier-Division on May 19, 194-3, when a Fiihrer directiveItemconverted all mo<strong>to</strong>rized infantry divisions in<strong>to</strong> panzer grenadierdivisions. After heavy losses in the Kursk offensive in the summerof 1943, the division was engaged west of Smolensk, Although thereare no <strong>records</strong> of the division available d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than December31, 1943, the situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps of Lage Ost, West, and Frankreich showth<strong>at</strong> from January <strong>to</strong> July 1944 the division particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the defenseof the Dubrovno area, returned <strong>to</strong> Germany in July 1944 for rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion,and in the autumn was ordered <strong>to</strong> the western front,From November 1944 <strong>to</strong> January 1945 the division, augmented by the107. Panzer-Brigade, defended the Saarlautern and Kaisorslauternareas.
