The 24. Infanterie-Division (l. Welle) was formed in 1935-36 duringthe expansion of the Army after the introduction of universal militaryservice in March 1935. In September 1939 it particip<strong>at</strong>ed inthe campaign against Poland and in May 1940 in the western campaign.It was transferred <strong>to</strong> the southern sec<strong>to</strong>r of the eastern front inJune 1941 and fought its way <strong>to</strong> Kremenchug, south <strong>to</strong> Krivoi Rog,and finally <strong>to</strong> the Crimea. In July 1942 it helped capture Sevas<strong>to</strong>pol.The division was transferred <strong>to</strong> the northern sec<strong>to</strong>r south ofLeningrad in August 1942, where it particip<strong>at</strong>ed in oper<strong>at</strong>ions alongthe Volkhov River between Chudovo and Volkhov and along the Moscow-Item24.
