<strong>VRIOGS</strong> <strong>012.6.32</strong> Revision A 3SECTION 3.0SCOPE AND GENERAL3.1 ScopeThis Standard details the purchasing and acceptance criteria for thesupply of red stranded single core 6 mm 2 copper cable for positive tracklead connections to rail for railway signalling purposes.3.2 ApplicationTo be applied to all new Signalling cable installations, or alterations toexisting cabling, within the <strong>Victoria</strong>n Rail Network.3.3 BackgroundThis Standard has been updated to be compatible with the <strong>VRIOGS</strong>tandards Upgrade Project. 4 <strong>VRIOGS</strong> <strong>012.6.32</strong> Revision ASECTION 4.0GENERAL DESCRIPTION4.1 6 mm², 1 Core multiple stranded tinned annealed copper, 84/0.30 mm orapproved equivalent.4.2 Conductor shall be tinned annealed copper, grade and resistance inaccordance with AS1125.4.3 The conductor shall have a maximum DC resistance at 20 o C of3.39Ω/km, resistance in accordance with AS1125.4.4 Actual resistance of the conductor shall not vary from nominal resistanceby more than ±2%.4.5 The overall diameter shall be the minimum consistent with compliance tothe specified conductor and insulation dimensions.4.6 Cable shall comply with AS5000.1 in as far as it applies.4.7 Cable is to be for underground use.NOTE: This document is controlled only when viewed on the DOT Engineering Standards website.Any other copy of this document is uncontrolled, and the content may be inaccurate.


<strong>VRIOGS</strong> <strong>012.6.32</strong> Revision A 5SECTION 5.0INSULATION5.1 The insulation shall be R-CPE-90 elastomeric compound in accordancewith AS3808.5.2 The insulation shall have a minimum average radial thickness of3.7mm.5.3 The insulation shall be coloured RED.5.4 The insulation shall be indelibly marked at intervals of not more than500mm, throughout the whole length of the cable with:a. manufacturer’s name or identifying initials.b. year of manufacture.c. the words “Railways - Track Lead Cable 6 mm sq”.5.5 In addition the cable shall be marked at 1 metre intervals with theprogressive length starting from the inner end of the drum. Lengthmarking shall be in white numerals on red background. Numerals shallbe 5.0mm high.5.6 The insulation shall be applied in such a manner that no undue residualstrain is left in the material and it shall be free from pinholes, joints,mended places and other defects. 8 <strong>VRIOGS</strong> <strong>012.6.32</strong> Revision ASECTION 8.0TESTS8.1 The Contractor shall have performed type tests as listed in AS5000, onsamples of insulation material, and insulated core and sheath materialas applicable.8.2 Type test certificates from a NATA laboratory approved for such testsmust be available.8.3 During the course of manufacture and/or final testing of the cable, allrelevant tests specified as Routine, in AS5000, must be performed oneach length of cable.8.4 Test Certificates shall be supplied for all cables made to thisspecification. These shall detail:a. Conductor Resistance range.b. Insulation Resistance range.c. <strong>VRIOGS</strong> <strong>012.6.32</strong> Revision A 9SECTION 9.0PACKAGING9.1 The cable shall be coiled on well built wooden drums in lengths of 100metres in accordance with AS 2857 in as far as it applies.9.2 The size of the drums shall not exceed 1020mm in width or 1850mm indiameter.9.3 The cable shall be tightly coiled on the drum and the ends shall beeffectively secured to prevent movement of the coils during transportand handling.9.4 Protective external lagging consisting of timber slats shall be securedaround the perimeter of the cable drums to prevent damage duringtransport and handling. This shall be secured and banded with steelstrapping.9.5 A minimum 500mm of the inner end of each length of cable shall bebrought out and firmly clamped to facilitate testing, and this end shallbe carefully and effectively protected from damage during transit. Theouter end shall be firmly clamped in a position for testing and theposition marked on the outside of the drum.9.6 Each drum shall be indelibly marked on the outside of the flange asfollows:• Order number.• Drum number.• Size and type of cable.• Length in metres.• The word “RAILWAYS” in large type.• A distinctive arrow on each side of the drum indicating the directionin which the drum must be rotated when being rolled from onelocation to another.NOTE: This document is controlled only when viewed on the DOT Engineering Standards website.Any other copy of this document is uncontrolled, and the content may be inaccurate.
