Advanced National Goalkeeping DiplomaFlank Play – 2-goal and 3-goal2-GoalThe two goal situation is a early ball played from the flank across the box in between the defense and thegoalkeeper. This ball forces the goalkeeper to make the decision to come win the ball or to stay and try to make apoint-blank save if their defense cannot clear the ball. The goalkeeper’s position is similar to what they would do on a cross but should be more closed and facing theserve. The position of the goalkeeper depends on their age, size, skills level of players and athletic ability.Training the 2-goalBalls start on the flank with the attacker. As soon as the attacker takes their first touch the defender can go. Theattacker is trying to play an early ball across the box. The attacker on top of the box is trying to get on the end ofthe ball played across while the defender is trying to clear the ball out of danger. When the ball is played acrossthe goalkeeper must make a decision to come win the ball in which case they would use a loud “keeper” call andwin the ball. If they decide they can not win the ball then they must yell “away” and communicate with theirdefender. If the goalkeeper yells away they must still follow the ball across the goal and set for a shot. In trainingmake sure that the striker avoids contact with “keeper” call.Field Sessions69
