The Flames will wear a special patch on their jerseys <strong>com</strong>memorating their 30th year inCalgary and have also unveiled a retro throwback sweater that will be worn five timesthroughout the <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong> season against their Canadian rivals.The Flames’ first appearance in the Cup finals was in 1986, and their most recent in2004, when they electrified not only the city of Calgary but captivated all of Canadawith their inspirational playoff run. The Flames followed up that performance bywinning the tough Northwest Division in 2005-06 with <strong>10</strong>3 points, ranking seventhoverall in the <strong>NHL</strong> and winning the William Jennings Trophy. That same year,goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was awarded the Vezina Trophy as the <strong>NHL</strong>’s topgoaltender, while Dion Phaneuf was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophyas the league’s best rookie. In 2008-09 the Flames made the playoffs for the fifthconsecutive season and for the 20th time in the team’s history in Calgary.In 2003-04, the Flames launched an exciting new red jersey as their home sweater,while the traditional whites were worn strictly for road games. The C of Red wasrevived during the <strong>NHL</strong> playoffs, and the red Flames jersey became the top-sellingjersey launch in <strong>NHL</strong> history. With the league-wide introduction of the ReebokEDGE Uniform System at the start of the 2007-08 season, the Flames jersey wasmodified to include minor striping changes and shoulder patches featuring the flagsof Canada and Alberta. The alternate black jersey has been officially retired.In June <strong>2009</strong>, the Flames named Brent Sutter as their new head coach. Brentamassed an 18-year <strong>NHL</strong> playing career with the New York Islanders and ChicagoBlackhawks. He recorded 363 goals and 466 assists for 829 points and 1,054penalty minutes in 1,111 career regular season games. Brent scored an additional30 goals and 44 assists for 74 points and 164 penalty minutes in 144 career playoffgames. Along with his brother Duane, Flames Director of Player Personnel, Brentwas a member of the New York Islanders’ 1982 and 1983 Stanley Cup Championteams and served as captain from 1987 through 1991.7 <strong>CALGARY</strong> <strong>FLAMES</strong>
