Harleyis the youngest of six children raised on a farm near Tillsonburg,Ontario. He spent his winters on the pond playing hockey emulatinghis beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. His idol was Syl Apps. In addition todreaming of playing in the <strong>NHL</strong>, the young Hotchkiss also planned asecond career in the business world, just in case. The game of hockeywas the beneficiary of Harley’s practical side as he has used hisbusiness success to ensure the growth and development of hockeyin Canada.An original member of the Flames ownership group, Harley Hotchkisswas among this group of local businessmen who introduced theNational Hockey League to the City of Calgary in the spring of 1980.The pinnacle of their storied history occurred in 1989 when the Flamescaptured the Stanley Cup. Of his numerous contributions to the game,his most recent efforts and role on behalf of the <strong>NHL</strong> were to find aresolution to the <strong>NHL</strong> labour dispute that forced the cancellation of the2004-2005 season. Harley served six two-year terms as Chairman ofthe <strong>NHL</strong> Board of Governors.Harley has been an avid supporter of Hockey Canada. The Flames make annual financial contributions toHockey Canada for the continued development and growth of the game. With the investment in bringingthe <strong>NHL</strong> to Calgary, the purchase of the Flames funded the creation of the Centre of Excellence that offeredcoaching clinics, research in hockey development and sports injuries as well as athletic scholarships toCanadian universities. The introduction of Project 75 contributed over $8 million that is distributed by HockeyCanada to benefit the game throughout the country.His involvement in hockey reaches from the grassroots to the top branch. As a young college athlete atMichigan State University, Harley was a member of the 1950 Spartans varsity hockey club. He continues tomaintain a director’s position for the Hockey Hall of Fame. His generosity for other like-minded hockey peopleis continuously demonstrated as he has made contributions for the construction of hockey arenas throughoutCanada including Fox Valley, SK and Aylmer, ON.Al MacInnis - Player, 1981–1994, Inducted – 2007On November 12, 2007, Al MacInnis became the <strong>10</strong>th member in the history of the Calgary Flames organizationto be honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.Born Allan MacInnis on July 11, 1963 in Port Hood, Nova Scotia, Al played junior for the Kitchener Rangersbeginning in 1980-81. During the summer of 1981, MacInnis was drafted in the first round, fifteenth overall,by the Flames. Although he played a handful of games for the Flames in both 1981-82 and 1982-83, MacInniscontinued his junior career, which included a Memorial Cup championship in 1982.After spending the early part of the 1983-84 season with the CHL’s Colorado Flames, MacInnis became a fulltimemember of the Calgary Flames' blueline later that season, playing 51 games and scoring 11 goals and 34assists for 45 points.MacInnis spent thirteen seasons with Calgary before moving to St. Louis, but left Alberta having evolved intoone of the most effective defencemen in the <strong>NHL</strong>. While with the Flames, he played in eight All-Star Games,but more importantly, was a key <strong>com</strong>ponent of a Stanley Cup championship for Calgary in 1989, the first infranchise history. For his contributions in the playoffs that spring, including 7 goals and 24 assists in 22 games,MacInnis was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy. In a franchise high 803 games played, MacInnis recorded 822points as a member of the Flames. He also holds the career franchise record for Assists (609).Peter Maher - Play by Play, Inducted – 2006Flames play-by-play man, Peter Maher was honoured by the Hockey Hall of Fame as the winner of the 2006Foster Hewett Memorial Award. Maher has been the voice of the Flames since the 81-82 season. A native ofCampbellton, New Brunswick, Maher's success as a hockey play-by-play voice led to his induction into the NewBrunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. Maher has also called World Championship games, six <strong>NHL</strong>All-Star games, and the Stanley Cup Finals in ’80, ’86, ’89 and ’04.The award, named in honour of the late Foster Hewitt is presented in recognition of members of the radio andtelevision industry who have made outstanding contributions to their profession and to the game of hockey.23 <strong>CALGARY</strong> <strong>FLAMES</strong>
