TheBoard hears enough about other schoolsaround the world to know that this is notalways the case, and we are very thankfuland appreciative of we have at ISS.I can report that the financial health ofthe school continues to be strong, despitethe global financial crisis. Many schoolsaround the world are having to reactto dramatic drops in enrollment, but,much to our surprise, we continue to seenew enrollment records set at ISS eachmonth (689 total students at last count).The enrollment forecast is sufficientlyrobust that the Board is now seriouslyconsidering possible facility expansionand improvements. There may be moreto report on this come August.I take this opportunity to advise that Iwill be leaving Stavanger next month, andthat fellow Board member Tor Minsaaswill assume the role of Board Chair.Tor has several years of experience onthe Board, and will be backed by a veryexperienced, and professional Board.The insights I have gained as a Boardmember over the last 6 years has onlyincreased my appreciation and respectfor our school.In closing, I thank the entire ISSprofessional team (administration,teachers and staff), and all the parentswho give of their time in support oftheir children, for a hugely rewardingand successful school year. News from the Exams CoordinatorInformation for IB and IGCSE candidatesIB results (May 2009)IB students can access their results at http://results.ibo.org from 16:00 Norwegian time on Monday 6 th July2009. All students have a pin code which allows them to access their own results only, and students should notethat the site only allows a limited number of attempts with the pin code so it is vital NOT to try to access the sitebefore the designated time, and to enter the pin code absolutely accurately! Any students who have problems withthe IBO site can contact me by telephone on Monday evening only at 51 55 30 54 (from 18:00 to 21:00).Students who have questions about their results (who wish to query their results, or investigate the possibilityof retakes, or who would like the school to contact universities about their provisional offers) MUST contactme in school on Tuesday 7 th July or Wednesday 8 th July between 09:00 and 14:00. Deadlines are very short, andI will only be available on those two days to arrange the possibility of November retakes! After that, I will notbe available until the beginning of August, which is after the deadline for November retakes.Diplomas and Certificates are normally mailed to the school in late August or early September, and will then be sentby registered post to the address provided by the student. Write reviews of booksonline (like on Amazon). Go to plays. Read the newspaper - cover to cover. Randomly select a page froma fiction text or a poem and write a commentary. Compare two texts you’ve read for pleasure in terms oftheme, style or character development.• French or Spanish: For French students, keep your eye in by checking on the latest world news in French,at: http://news.fr.msn.com/ For Spanish, students would benefit from reading on-line newspapers atwww.20minutos.es. This gives you an opportunity to read headlines as well as read about current filmsand music. Also, listening to live radio and watching live TV can also be an enriching experience. GoogleMadridman’s favorites and find live radio and TV. Live streaming and recorded programs are both available.• Social studies: For Economics, students should be keeping-up with international news in order to providereal world examples in IB exams next year. This should relate to theory already covered but you can also getahead with information in the news relating to next year’s topics. (You might also be able to find yourselvesa suitable article to base the internal assessments on next year.) For History and Psychology there are manysources of background reading to help you develop a deeper understanding of the subjects.• Sciences: Science students can gain a lot by watching science documentaries on TV, and reading a qualityscience magazine such as ‘New Scientist’ each week. There are many excellent ‘popular science’ booksavailable in the shops, for example, Physics students may find it very motivational to read an accessible bookby an author such as Brian Greene or John Gribbin. Brian Greene’s “The Elegant Universe” is also a 3 hourvideo on the PBS web site: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/program.html and ted.com has somegreat 20 minute lectures on Physics as well, especially related to Astrophysics, Quantum, etc.• Math: why not go over some of the Math you studied during 11th grade? They busily explored theStavanger area. This included a trip to the Oil Museum,the Iron Age Farm as well as an excursion to Dalsnutenand a cruise on the Lysefjord. Primary School NewsReady to perform in ”the Keymaster”Congratulations to the cast of the Primary School musical, !TheKeymaster” , for three wonderful productions. Thank you toparents and staff for all that was done behind the scenes, andespecially Christine Kemp for directing the musical.Congratulations to the students who participated in the trackand field practices and meet. Beyond having fun, the studentsgot a feel for being part of a team and learned skills in manyareas. Thank you to the many parents and staff who helpeddirect activities and teach skills. Thank you as well to the varsitytrack team for helping with the track meet, and to Ms Warnerfor organizing the program.Congratulations to our Pre-School 3 and Pre-School 4 childrenfor a lovely parade around our school on 15 May. Most of theschool and many parents showed up for the event. For the 17May parade, we are so proud of all the students. Children weredressed so smart, and they sang and chanted almost non-stopfor the whole length of the parade. ISS was led by our Grade4 handbell players who played 130 chords from memory andsang and walked at the same time. They were followed by ourGrade 5 students carrying flags of nations represented at ISSand lovely choirs of singing and happy children. These children,along with an amazing marching band and all the Middle andHigh School students earned ISS the prize as the best group inthe children’s parade. News from the Health, Security, Safety and Environment (HSSE) CommitteeMs Sølve Ims Ottesen SOttesen@isstavanger.noMay is maybe the best of all months– everything is new and fresh, severalholidays, and a taste of summer – all thatmakes us happy.I am glad to say that we have not hadany severe incidents at school. Both thestudents and the staff have a high focuson HSSE, (Health, Safety Security andthe Environment), which makes us ableto keep a good standard. So thanks toall of you who contribute so that ISS inevery manner is a good working place forboth young students and adults.But – we can improve:Parking in the non-parking areas stillis a problem. I challenge all of you tofollow the instructions. Don’t forget itconcerns your own children.Waste handling: As you might know, ISSis a Miljøfyrtårn bedrift (EnvironmentalLighthouse Organization). That meansamong other factors, that we have toreduce the waste. So far, that has beena problem. From the start of the newschool year, we will attempt to improve,but that will need a contribution from all.To recycle more of the waste, the sortinghas to be even better. If we succeed inthis, the results can be measured in botheconomic and environmental terms.More information will be given as thenew school year starts.Use of Aerosol painting: ISS hasdecided that use of spray painting is notallowed on the school campus, due toboth consideration of the environmentand the possibility of inhaling unhealthyaerosol gas. We are aware of, however,that some of the students may still usethis type of paint at home, particularlyon art projects. We do not recommendthis, but if they all the same intend to usespray paint, please see to it that they areprotected by masks. To make it easierto get a mask, it will be possible to buymasks from the art teachers for NOK25,-.
