Each lesson in this book offers tips that will help youanswer the kinds of test questions taught in that lesson. Here are some tips that will help you become a bettertest taker no matter what kind of test you’re taking.1 When you begin a test, quicklyscan all the questions. This willhelp you see what the test isabout and how many questionsyou will have to answer.2 It is important to manage yourtime while taking a test. Begin bychecking the number of questionsin the test and the amount oftime you have to take the test.Try to complete about half of thequestions by the time you areabout halfway through the totaltest time. Keep track of the timeas you work.3 Read all DIRECTIONS verycarefully. Don’t begin answeringquestions before you read thedirections.4 If you feel nervous before a test, try this: Close your eyes and takeseveral slow, deep breaths. Spenda few minutes relaxing yourmind.5 Try to answer ALL the testquestions. Do the easy ones first. When you come to a hardquestion, don’t spend too muchtime trying to figure it out. Waituntil you have finished the easyquestions. Then go back and workon the hard ones.6 All tests have some hardquestions. They are meant tostump you! It is best to make agood guess at the answer. First, find any choices that you knoware wrong. Then, look at theleftover choices and make yourbest guess.7 Mark your answers by filling inthe circle with a dark pencilmark. If you make a mistake, erase thoroughly. Then fill in thecircle next to the correct answer.8 When you have finished the test,go back and work on anyquestions you skipped, or go backand check your answers.Remember, we all learn from our mistakes! When your test hasbeen scored, look over the questions that you missed. Go back andstudy each one until you know why you missed it. If you still don’tunderstand a question, ask for help. Then, the next time you see aquestion like the one you missed, you will know what to do.4

1 Use scratch paper to write down the numbers you need to2 Look for key words that tell you what kind of computationsolve a problem.is needed. Some examples are less than, greatest, between, nearest, least, closest, and so on.3 Try out all answer choices until you find the one that iscorrect. Sometimes the correct answer is not given. Then youshould follow the directions for marking the Not Given choice(NG in this book).4 Make sure you know what to solve for in each problem.Write a number sentence or an equation to help you solve it.5 Write down each piece of information given in a problem. And write down or circle what each problem asks you tofind. When you have an answer, go back and make sure itanswers the question you wrote down or circled.6 Rename fractions with different denominators as like7 Always reduce fractions to their simplest forms. Whenfractions (with same denominators).looking for the correct answer to a problem with fractions, look for the one that has been reduced.8 For a measurement or geometry problem, write down theformula you need to solve the problem. Then “plug into” theformula the numbers from the problem.9 Remember, an equation must stay balanced. What you doto one side of an equation you must do to the other side.10 Check subtraction problems by adding; check divisionproblems by multiplying; check multiplication problemsby dividing.6
